Henry Rollins Trivia Questions

1. Henry Rollins was born Henry ________.

From Quiz
Henry Rollins: The DC Years

Answer: Garfield

Henry was born on the 13th of February, 1961. He named his publishing company, 21361, after that date. They publish books and collections by, among others, Nick Cave, Don Bajema, and of course, Rollins himself. I recommend 'Black Coffee Blues' and 'Get in the Van' as my two personal favourites.

2. Henry Rollins sang in this band prior to forming the Rollins Band in 1986.

From Quiz Rollins Band

Answer: Black Flag

Ol' Hank gave even more energy to the already intense Black Flag when he joined in 1981, after spontaneously jumping onstage at a concert in New York and singing a few tunes with the band.

3. At the time Henry moved out of his family home, where was he working?

From Quiz Henry Rollins: The DC Years

Answer: Ice Cream Store

Henry worked in a Haagen-Daazs ice cream store. He worked long hours to pay for his small apartment in Washington, where he grew up. Perhaps this flavoured (excuse the pun) his decision to call one of his books 'Eye Scream'.

4. Henry Rollins sang in this band prior to joining Black Flag in 1981.

From Quiz Rollins Band

Answer: State of Alert

This was Rollins' earliest band. State of Alert (S.o.A.) released the "No Policy" EP on Dischord Records, which was run by Henry's friend Ian Mackaye (of Minor Threat and Fugazi fame). This EP was later re-released as part of the "Flex Your Head" compilation album, showcasing DC punk bands.

5. In the early days in Washington DC, Henry's musical life was greatly influenced by the band 'Bad Brains' - their frontman was one of the most high energy performers at that time in the DC area. What was this legendary frontman known as?

From Quiz Henry Rollins: The DC Years

Answer: HR

The frontman of the 'Bad Brains' was Paul Hudson, or 'HR'. Henry's first contact with them came in 1979 when he saw them play 'Madam's Organ' - a performance space in Northwest Washington DC. His first physical contact came when HR jumped off the stage onto him!

6. After the breakup of Black Flag, Henry formed the Rollins Band. This new band featured Chris Haskett on guitar, Andrew Weiss on bass, and Sim Cain on drums. Andrew and Sim had previously played together in what band?

From Quiz Rollins Band

Answer: Gone

The three-piece instrumental band Gone featured Greg Ginn of Black Flag on guitar and often opened for the Flag on tour.

7. Henry was lead singer for Washington punkers SOA. They had fairly big success locally but not so widespread as Henry's later band Black Flag. What did SOA stand for?

From Quiz Henry Rollins: The DC Years

Answer: State of Alert

State of Alert was the band that 'The Extorts' became after lead singer Lyle Preslar left to join Minor Threat. Henry was at that time (late 1980) a fixture on the DC hardcore scene, but until then his singing abilities had gone pretty much unchecked.

8. Recording as the Rollins Band for the first time, this debut album was released in 1988, produced by Ian Mackaye.

From Quiz Rollins Band

Answer: Life Time

This monster of an album features the classic jams "Burned Beyond Recognition" and "1,000 Times Blind", among others.

9. Henry's friend Ian MacKaye wrote a song which became the perfect anthem for the Georgetown posse of which Henry was a part. The song perfectly suited their hardcore no-drink, no-drugs policies. What was the name of that song?

From Quiz Henry Rollins: The DC Years

Answer: Straightedge

Ian MacKaye was one of Henry's first and real friends. They skated together and along with other friends they picked up from the skating and punk scenes became a well respected group on the punk scene in DC.

10. Finish the lyric, from "Lonely" off of the album "Life Time": "I hate the world that I think hates me/Punch holes in the wall..."

From Quiz Rollins Band

Answer: "...you know that hurts me"

This is a great song about, obviously, being lonely. The band slams through it with above-average muscle, both on the studio version, and on two different live albums, "Turned On" and "Live in Australia 1990".

11. Henry used to walk home along a route which took him past the Redneck bars and music venues of downtown DC. Over what river did he used to cross on his way home from the Ice Cream Store?

From Quiz Henry Rollins: The DC Years

Answer: Potomac

If you ever go to Washington DC then be sure to see the monuments for which it is famed beside Capitol Hill, but be equally sure to take a walk into some of the less well-off areas which were originally populated by the thousands of black workers who were brought in from the southern states to build the Pentagon. These areas serve as a reminder that there is often hidden depth behind the scenes.

12. Henry was a useful friend to have around the time he was in SOA - not only for the ability to fight his way out of trouble but for his battered old car with the interior all burnt out. What make was that car?

From Quiz Henry Rollins: The DC Years

Answer: Volkswagen

His old VW took a beating over the years. The inside had been completely torched but it was still driveable, so he continued to drive it in true Rollins style. More recently, he can been seen in 'Jackass: The Movie' driving a Hum-Vee, a far cry from that good ol' VW.

13. Finish this lyric from "Low Self Opinion", off 1992's "The End of Silence": "The world falls down around you/You build up walls around you..."

From Quiz Rollins Band

Answer: "...you wear disgust like a crown"

"Low Self Opinion" is a scathing condemnation of people who would rather complain about themselves than do anything to change whatever faults they believe they have.

14. Who did Henry replace as lead singer in Black Flag in 1981?

From Quiz Henry Rollins: The DC Years

Answer: Dez Cadena

Dez moved over to second guitar and Henry sold his beat up VW, quit his job at the ice ceam store, and moved out of his apartment in DC and into the phenomenon known as 'Black Flag'.

15. For the recording of 1994's "Weight" Andrew Weiss quit the band(or got fired, depending on who you ask). Who replaced him on the bass guitar?

From Quiz Rollins Band

Answer: Melvin Gibbs

Melvin's sound is a little more distorted and a LOT funkier. The shift in style in the rhythm section actually served to increase the band's musical power, and the "Weight" album became their biggest commercial success, producing the radio- and MTV-hit "Liar".

16. With what song does Henry's first album with Black Flag, 'Damaged', start?

From Quiz Henry Rollins: The DC Years

Answer: Rise Above

The 'Damaged' album is my personal favourite Black Flag album. It was realeased in 1981 (I was only just born in this year) and it is hard to find an album with a harder edged sound to it.

17. Here's one that only hardcore Henry fans will know - What was the name of the teacher at Bullis School that introduced a young Henry to weight lifting? (the rest of you just guess - you got a one in four chance)

From Quiz Henry Rollins: The DC Years

Answer: Mr. Pepperman

Mr. Pepperman used to give Henry a lift to and from school. He was a Vietnam veteran who first introduced Henry to weights and came up with a workout plan for him. Mr Pepperman remembers "He really wanted to put some weight on and be more physical - that seemed real important to him". Thanks for taking this quiz.

18. After the release of 1994's "Weight", the band's label, Imago Records, went bankrupt. What major label did the Rollins Band subsequently sign with?

From Quiz Rollins Band

Answer: Dreamworks Records

The Rollins Band released only two albums for Dreamworks, 1997's "Come In and Burn" and 2000's "Get Some Go Again", before the band left the label. It was generally felt that Dreamworks was not fully behind the band, not putting much effort into the production or promotion of the records.

19. 2001's "Get Some Go Again" featured the incendiary rocker "Hotter and Hotter" featuring a guest guitarist from an influential proto-punk band. Who was it and what band was he in?

From Quiz Rollins Band

Answer: Wayne Kramer, MC5

"Brother" Wayne Kramer's guest riffing on "Hotter and Hotter" is one of the album's highlights. The Detroit-based MC5 were a total shock to the hippie crowds of the mid-60s. They laid down the gauntlet for much of the late 70s punk to come.
