Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Henry Rollins sang in this band prior to forming the Rollins Band in 1986.

Answer: Black Flag

Ol' Hank gave even more energy to the already intense Black Flag when he joined in 1981, after spontaneously jumping onstage at a concert in New York and singing a few tunes with the band.
2. Henry Rollins sang in this band prior to joining Black Flag in 1981.

Answer: State of Alert

This was Rollins' earliest band. State of Alert (S.o.A.) released the "No Policy" EP on Dischord Records, which was run by Henry's friend Ian Mackaye (of Minor Threat and Fugazi fame). This EP was later re-released as part of the "Flex Your Head" compilation album, showcasing DC punk bands.
3. After the breakup of Black Flag, Henry formed the Rollins Band. This new band featured Chris Haskett on guitar, Andrew Weiss on bass, and Sim Cain on drums. Andrew and Sim had previously played together in what band?

Answer: Gone

The three-piece instrumental band Gone featured Greg Ginn of Black Flag on guitar and often opened for the Flag on tour.
4. Recording as the Rollins Band for the first time, this debut album was released in 1988, produced by Ian Mackaye.

Answer: Life Time

This monster of an album features the classic jams "Burned Beyond Recognition" and "1,000 Times Blind", among others.
5. Finish the lyric, from "Lonely" off of the album "Life Time": "I hate the world that I think hates me/Punch holes in the wall..."

Answer: "...you know that hurts me"

This is a great song about, obviously, being lonely. The band slams through it with above-average muscle, both on the studio version, and on two different live albums, "Turned On" and "Live in Australia 1990".
6. In 1992, the Rollins Band released "The End of Silence". The cover of this album features an elaborate sun design with a mean-looking face staring out from the middle. Where did this image come from?

Answer: It is tattooed on Henry's back.

The tattoo was done over a period of two months in 1985 by Rick Spellman in an L.A. tattoo studio. Above the sun design are the words "Search and Destroy".
7. Finish this lyric from "Low Self Opinion", off 1992's "The End of Silence": "The world falls down around you/You build up walls around you..."

Answer: "...you wear disgust like a crown"

"Low Self Opinion" is a scathing condemnation of people who would rather complain about themselves than do anything to change whatever faults they believe they have.
8. For the recording of 1994's "Weight" Andrew Weiss quit the band(or got fired, depending on who you ask). Who replaced him on the bass guitar?

Answer: Melvin Gibbs

Melvin's sound is a little more distorted and a LOT funkier. The shift in style in the rhythm section actually served to increase the band's musical power, and the "Weight" album became their biggest commercial success, producing the radio- and MTV-hit "Liar".
9. The Rollins Band song that most people are familiar with is "Liar" due to the video's heavy MTV airplay. In the video, Henry dresses up as all of the following EXCEPT:

Answer: a Construction Worker

The Anton Corbijn-directed video featured Rollins in various get-ups, as well as covered head to toe in red paint.
10. In 1994, the Rollins Band appeard twice at the Grammy Awards; both to perform "Liar" and receive the Award for "Best Metal Performance".

Answer: False

While the band *did* preform "Liar", and Rollins *did* recieve a Grammy that year, it was not for Best Metal Performance. He won "Best Audio Book" for "Get in the Van", a spoken word album he released, in which he reads selections from the book of the same name, chronicling his time spent on the road with Black Flag.
11. After the release of 1994's "Weight", the band's label, Imago Records, went bankrupt. What major label did the Rollins Band subsequently sign with?

Answer: Dreamworks Records

The Rollins Band released only two albums for Dreamworks, 1997's "Come In and Burn" and 2000's "Get Some Go Again", before the band left the label. It was generally felt that Dreamworks was not fully behind the band, not putting much effort into the production or promotion of the records.
12. After the release of "Come In and Burn", the Rollins Band broke up. They were reformed with all-new musicians: Jim Wilson on guitar, Marcus Blake on bass, and Jason Mackenroth on drums. What band was this trio preforming under prior to backing up Henry?

Answer: Mother Superior

The heavily-rocking three-piece Mother Superior have released five albums of their own, as well as teaming with Henry under the Rollins Band name for two more, 2000's "Get Some Go Again" and 2001's "Nice".
13. 2001's "Get Some Go Again" featured the incendiary rocker "Hotter and Hotter" featuring a guest guitarist from an influential proto-punk band. Who was it and what band was he in?

Answer: Wayne Kramer, MC5

"Brother" Wayne Kramer's guest riffing on "Hotter and Hotter" is one of the album's highlights. The Detroit-based MC5 were a total shock to the hippie crowds of the mid-60s. They laid down the gauntlet for much of the late 70s punk to come.
14. In addition to the Rollins Band's music albums, Henry has released a series of spoken-word records, in which he rants and raves about whatever is on his mind at the time. All of the following are titles of these records EXCEPT:

Answer: Brutal Truth

Henry's spoken-word shows are nearly as intense as his bands. When he gets running on a topic, he can get as fiery as if he were backed by the mega-decible assault of his bandmates. However, the shows often take hilariously funny detours, as Henry Rollins' personality is not made up *entirely* of anger.
15. Okay, here's a toughie to end on: Prior to 1997, there were five members in the Rollins Band. Four were musicians (including Henry) and one was the longtime sound man. What is his name?

Answer: theo van rock

Theo served as the band's sound man from their inception in 1986 until the breakup (and subsequent reformation) in 1997. He handled the band's sound during recording as well as in the live shows.
