Saint Marcella is a Roman Catholic saint, who devoted her life to prayer and charity, after her husbands early death. Her feast day is on January 31st. The song "Stay" was released in 1992, and it reached and stayed at number one in the UK for eight weeks, making it one of the longest running number ones ever in the UK and one of the most successful songs of the 90's. The name of the band was taken from a song entitled "Shakespeare's Sister", that was written and released by English rock group The Smiths in 1985. The title of the song itself refers to an essay that was written by feminist Virginia Woolf, entitled "A Room of One's Own" in 1929. The essay explains, that if William Shakespeare had of had a sister who was equally as intelligent and gifted as himself, then as a woman she would not have had the same opportunites as he had in life to use and demonstrate those same skills. "Shakespeare's Sister" was the bands original name, but the final 'e' and apostrophe were dropped due to a friend misspelling a logo they were creating for the band, after the release of their debut album "Sacred Heart".
