1. Shakespears Sister was first formed by Siobhan Fahey in 1988, but which American vocalist joined the band and sang vocals with her between 1989-1993?

Answer: Marcella Detroit

As well as sharing vocals in Shakespears Sister, Marcella Detroit also wrote for Shakespears Sister, as well as for Belinda Carlisle, Charlotte Church and Chaka Khan amongst others.

After leaving Shakespears Sister, Marcella carried on singing as a solo artist and has had hits with "I Believe", "I'm No Angel" and has dueted with Elton John on "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing".

Saint Marcella is a Roman Catholic saint, who devoted her life to prayer and charity, after her husbands early death. Her feast day is on January 31st. Marcella Puppini is one third of the unrelated English group, The Puppini Sisters. Their music is influenced by jazz, pop and are considered to be a close harmony group.
2. Before forming Shakespears Sister, Siobhan Fahey was a singer and song writer for pop group 'The Bangles'.

Answer: False

Siobhan Fahey was actually one third of the English group Bananarama with Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward. Siobhan left in 1988 and was replaced by Jacquie O'Sullivan until 1991, when she (Jacquie) went to on to form her own band Slippery Feet. In 1993 original band members Sara and Keren re-formed Bananarama as a duo and are still active today.

Bananarama were popular in both the UK and the US throughout the 80's.
Popular hits included "Cruel Summer", "Love in the First Degree", "I Heard a Rumour" and "Venus". Bananarama also currently hold the world record for charting the most songs by an all-girl group in 'The Guinness Book of World Records', since 1988.
3. The song "Stay" was 'Shakespears Sister's' most well known song. But the video was banned in Germany. Why?

Answer: It was believed that Siobhan and Marcella were Witches.

Germany banned the video, claiming that the girls were witches and that their video was portraying the raising of the dead. Despite the video banning, the song and video proved to be nothing but a success in the majority of the countries it was released in, even reaching the top 20 in Germany itself.

The song "Stay" was released in 1992, and it reached and stayed at number one in the UK for eight weeks, making it one of the longest running number ones ever in the UK and one of the most successful songs of the 90's. It also reached chart number three in Australia, four in the US, and five in New Zealand.

Bands who have covered "Stay" include 'Cradle of Filth', 'Februus', 'Sweetbox', 'The Distnce', 'Blutengel', 'Deja Vu' and 'Mina and Piero Pelù'.
4. What was emblazoned on Siobhans sweatshirt, on the cover of the album "Hormonally Yours"?

Answer: Sex

The album cover of "Hormonally Yours" was shot in black and white and just featured Siobhan, Marcella and a guitar. Both girls were standing, with Marcella stood behind Siobhan, with the word 'SEX' largely printed on Siobhans sweatshirt.

5. These lyrics are from the song "I Don't Care". "Walking through the rooms in my head, I came across your image. You looked at me with that sweet smile and said, something they won't let me repeat. We hurt the ones we love the most it's a subtle form of compliment."

Answer: True

"I Don't care" was released in 1992 and reached number seven in the UK, 11 in New Zealand, 18 in Australia and 55 in the US charts.

This is the chorus of "I Don't Care":

"I don't care if you talk about me,
I don't care if you write it out in stone.
Whenever I fall I land on my feet.
I don't care, I just don't care."
6. What was the inspiration behind naming the band Shakespears Sister?

Answer: It was from a song by The Smiths.

The name of the band was taken from a song entitled "Shakespeare's Sister", that was written and released by English rock group The Smiths in 1985.

The title of the song itself refers to an essay that was written by feminist Virginia Woolf, entitled "A Room of One's Own" in 1929. The essay explains, that if William Shakespeare had of had a sister who was equally as intelligent and gifted as himself, then as a woman she would not have had the same opportunites as he had in life to use and demonstrate those same skills.

"Shakespeare's Sister" was the bands original name, but the final 'e' and apostrophe were dropped due to a friend misspelling a logo they were creating for the band, after the release of their debut album "Sacred Heart".
7. Shakespears Sister covered the song "I Shot the Sheriff", by Bob Marley.

Answer: False

Shakespears Sister did cover a Bob Marley song, but the song was "Could You Be Loved", which was on their debut album "Sacred Heart".

Shakespears Sister also covered one more song and that was the Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane song, "White Rabbit", and that was on the "The Best of Shakespear's Sister" album.

Other artists to cover "Could You Be Loved" include Joe Cocker and the band Toto.
8. Why was the second album entitled "Hormonally Yours"?

Answer: Both Siobhan and Marcella were both pregnant at the time and were feeling 'hormonal'.

"Hormonally Yours" was the second and last album that both Siobhan and Marcella produced together, and they were both pregnant at the time of recording.

Both went on to give birth to baby boys. Siobhan had baby Django, who she shares with Eurythmics member Dave Stewart, and Marcella had baby Maxwell. Both babies were listed in the albums credits, which reads as follows:

"Shakespears Sister would like to welcome Maxwell and Django without whom this album would have no title."
9. What song are these lyrics from? "I'm a close friend of destiny, when you're not here to bother me. Well you made your bed, better lie in it, get back to sleep!"

Answer: You're History

"You're History" was the third single released, yet the first single to chart well in the charts in 1989. It reached chart number seven in the UK, 20 in Australia and 28 in New Zealand.

Here is the next part of the song:

"You should see me when you're not around,
I'm a genius in this town.
I'm a queen bee when the coast is clear,
now I know I don't need you dear.
So leave your hand, like a magic man, and disappear.

You're history,
like a beat up car,
No good for me,
like an old film star.
You're history,
that's what you are,
na na na na."

"I Can Drive" was released by 'Shakespears Sister' in 1996 and reached number 30 in the UK charts.

"Hello (Turn Your Radio On)" was one of Siobhans favourite songs from the album 'Hormonally Yours'. She felt it was more personal, sentimental and more thoughtful then other songs she had written previously. Siobhan once said:

"'Hello is the furthest I've comes as a writer, because it's intense and emotional and it sounds like it could have been done by a man".

"Hello (Turn Your Radio On)" reached number 14 in the UK in 1992 and was the last single to fair well in the charts, while Marcella was still in the group.

Answer: Just wrap me up in chains.

And here are the lyrics to the rest of the song:

"If this world is wearing thin,
And you're thinking of escape,
I'll go anywhere with you,
Just wrap me up in chains.
But if you try to go alone,
Don't think I'll understand.

Stay with me.
Stay with me .

In the silence of your room,
In the darkness of your dreams,
You must only think of me,
There can be no in between.
When your pride is on the floor,
I'll make you beg for more.

Stay with me.
Stay with me.

You'd better hope and pray,
That you make it safe,
Back to your own world.
You'd better hope and pray,
That you'll wake one day,
In your own world.
Coz when you sleep at night,
They don't hear your cries,
In your own world.
Only time will tell,
If you can break the spell,
Back in your own world.

Stay with me,
Stay with me.
Stay, stay with me,
Stay, stay, stay, stay, stay,
Stay with me".
