Remakes, Covers & Rereleases For Experts Trivia Questions

1. Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin did not write "Dazed And Confused." Who did?

From Quiz
How Many of These Covers Do You Know? Part 4

Answer: Jake Holmes

Jake Holmes wrote the song in 1967. The Yardbirds then covered the song in 1968. Then Jimmy Page, formerly of the Yardbirds, recorded the song with his then-new group on their massively successful debut album in 1969. Jimmy Page has a writing credit on the song but the credits acknowledge that the song was "inspired by Jake Holmes."

2. "Tainted Love" was not originally performed by Marilyn Manson. Who WAS it first performed by?

From Quiz Songs You Didn't Know Were Covers

Answer: Gloria Jones

"Tainted Love" was written by Ed Cobb. He was not the original performer of the song though. The first recorded version of the song came out in 1964 and was sung by Gloria Jones. One interesting thing that you may notice if you're used to hearing any cover version of the song, is that the original goes "I give you all a GIRL could give you" instead of "all a BOY could give you." This question was meant as a trick question, as I was hoping some people would mistakenly answer "Soft Cell." They recorded the most popular version of the song in 1981. But yes, even their version of the song was a cover. So, Marilyn Manson is a third-generation performer of this song. Personally, I love all three versions of the song. I grew up on Marilyn Manson. However, my favorite version of this song is actually the original. Gloria Jones doesn't get the credit she deserves nowadays, but the fact is, she created a song (well technically she didn't create it, but her performance of the song originally defined it) that is loved by three generations of people.

3. Who performed "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert at Wembley stadium, London in 1992?

From Quiz Cover Versions

Answer: Guns n Roses

"Knockin' on Heaven's Door" was written and performed by Bob Dylan for the soundtrack of the 1973 film "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid", which he appeared in, with James Coburn and Kris Kristofferson.

4. In 1982 Van Halen recorded '(Oh) Pretty Woman' for their 'Diver Down' album. It was their second Top 20 hit and peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Charts. Who recorded the original version?

From Quiz Who Recorded the Original Version?

Answer: Roy Orbison

Released in 1964, it went to Number One on the charts for Roy Orbison and has been covered by several other artists as well, including Johnny Rivers, Al Green, and John Mellencamp.

5. The Damned's "New Rose" is widely regarded as the first ever British punk rock record released. Which Beatles song did The Damned release as the B-side?

From Quiz Covered In Punk

Answer: Help

The A side has been covered countless times, most notably by Guns N' Roses and Poison Idea. It featured the first Damned line-up to release anything of Vanian singing, Brian James on guitar, Captain Sensible on bass and Rat Scabies at the back. They recorded the "Damned, Damned, Damned" album, then added a second guitarist, Lu, recorded follow-up album, "Music For Pleasure", which the band themselves disparaged, and split up. James did bits and bobs, then ended up in The Lords Of The New Church with fellow punk legend, Stiv Bators from Dead Boys. The Damned reformed, albeit with a much-altered sound. Less frenetic, with a nod to the crooners and garage rock, this new approach alienated some older fans, but attracted just as many new ones.

6. In 1966 Dusty Springfield's recording of "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" topped the UK charts and reached Number Four in the US. Which US singer had a Number 11 hit in the US with the song four years later?

From Quiz Remakes of Sixties British Invasion Hits

Answer: Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley released "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" as a single and also had a Top Ten hit the same with "The Wonder of You", previously recorded by Ray Peterson. Dusty first heard Pino Donaggio sing "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" in Italian in 1965 during the Sanremo Festival. English lyrics were prepared and the song became a hit for Dusty the following year. "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" was included on her 1965 "Ev'rything's Coming Up Dusty" LP. Several other artists have recorded versions of the song. Neil Diamond released "Solitary Man" in 1970. Tom Jones' first US Top Ten was the 1965 hit, "It's Not Unusual". In 1967 Engelbert Humperdinck's "Release Me (And Let Me Love Again)" was his first big US hit.

From 'Lou Rawls - LIVE!'. One of his earlier efforts, it's more jazzy than his later material. Once you've heard it, you cannot forget it. Herb Alpert covered it in 1964 on his 'South of the Border' LP, but neither Ray Charles or Jerry Butler did, (it's pretty hard to find someone who didn't).

From Quiz Follow-up and Answer Songs of the 50's and 60's

Answer: I Shot Mr. Lee

"Mr. Lee" was written by The Bobbettes about their high school principal. "I Shot Mr. Lee" was their attempt at a follow-up song. Their label, Atlantic, rejected the song so The Bobbettes moved to the Triple X label where the tune started to catch on. Quickly, Atlantic released their copy of the girls' song.
