Psychedelic Rock Trivia Questions

1. The masterpiece of psychedelic music was undoubtedly the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". What song closed the album with one of the most famous final chords in music history?

From Quiz
Psychedelic Hits

Answer: A Day in the Life

Although frequently recognized as one of the Beatles' finest tracks, "A Day in the Life" was not released as a single. In fact none of the songs on the album were released as singles. The song was banned from broadcast on the BBC due to drug references.

2. Released in 1969, and featuring an intro by Charlie Daniels, is "Darkness, Darkness". What band performed the original?

From Quiz The Golden Age of Underground Radio

Answer: The Youngbloods

The song was released twice as a single, in 1969 and 1970. It didn't chart above number 86. Covers of "Darkness, Darkness", however, have done much better. Robert Plant's version reached number 27 in 2002.

3. In 1975, not 1972, a band named Crystalaugur that consisted of American teenagers, released an LP in Singapore on a private label. What is the title of their LP?

From Quiz Psychedelic Music LPs

Answer: Terranaut

In 1975, Crystalauger released 200 copies of their LP titled "Terranaut" on the private Warped label. The band consisted of American teenagers whose LP was released in Singapore. Most believe the LP was released in 1972 but according to an online interview with the rhythm guitarist, he says it was released in 1975. The music is very amateurish sounding and instruments seem out of tune at times, but the album is highly regarded and sells for roughly $500-$600. Check youtube.com to hear some of the LP's songs.

4. What artist or band released an LP with the following songs on it? They are: "Birds Fly So High", "I Feel Your Love", and "Don't You Feel Me."

From Quiz Psychedelic Music: Songs And LPs

Answer: Damon

Damon released the LP "Song Of A Gypsy" back in 1970. It is considered to be in the acid folk or folk psych genres. Only 200 copies were made to my knowledge. One hundred were in a mostly black textured gatefold (fold open) cover and the other hundred were in a mostly white standard single record cover. The cover art was completely different between the single and textured covers. The textured gatefold is preferred by collectors and sells for quite a bit more than the single sleeve. Pictures can be viewed on popsike.com. You should be able to hear songs on youtube.com. Copies of the gatefold Damon have sold in the past for over $3,000.00.

5. One rock band of the 1960s wanted to take us "Truckin'" up to Buffalo, down to Bourbon Street, and finally home. Who were they?

From Quiz Are You Ready for the Acid Test?

Answer: Grateful Dead

Ken Kesey (who wrote "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest"), along with his "Merry Pranksters", spent part of the '60s sponsoring parties (calling them 'Acid Tests') featuring psychoactive drugs in the San Francisco, California area. The parties included music by bands like the Warlocks, who renamed themselves the Grateful Dead; that's the answer to the question. The Psychedelic Era took on its own identity in the 'Summer of Love' in 1967, particularly in the San Francisco area, and the Grateful Dead were at the heart of it. As the years went by, the Dead were referred to as a psychedelic jug band, worn out hippies and other pejoratives but they outlasted the other bands, spawning imagery such as the doodah man and "China Cat Sunflower" along the way. It took the death of their leader, Jerry Garcia, in 1995, to finally bring the band to a halt, although band members still tour.

6. In the UK in 1971 a progressive album was released by a band called Leafhound. It was pressed on the Decca label. Can you give me the title of their now legendary album? It is their only release from back then.

From Quiz Progressive And Psychedelic Bands And Albums

Answer: Growers Of Mushroom

Leafhound was originally formed as a band called Black Cat Bones who released one album titled "Barbed Wire Sandwich." They were short lived and evolved into Leafhound. Q Magazine voted Leafhound's "Growers Of Mushroom" the number one most collectible rock album. This album has by now achieved mythical status. It was recorded in one eleven hour session at Spot Studios in Mayfair, London, in late 1970. The music is hard progressive rock that is rooted in blues and a touch of psychedelia. They don't sound like Led Zeppelin per se, but a lot of Led Zeppelin influence is evident. A copy of the original UK pressing sold for $3420.00 in 2008.

7. Ian Matthews left this band to form Matthews Southern Comfort.

From Quiz Off the Beaten Path Classic Psych Rock 3

Answer: Fairport Convention

He left at the beginning of 1969. Matthews Southern Comfort's debut was in 1970.

8. What member of the Pink Fairies recorded a solo album before the Pink Fairies recorded their first 45 and album, "Never Never Land"?

From Quiz Off the Beaten Path Classic Psych Rock 1

Answer: John Alder

Alder went under the pseudonym Twink and recorded a now-rare lp called "Think Pink" in 1970.

9. Which colorful song was one of the first in the realm of Psychedelia to top the charts and become a gold record?

From Quiz Psychedelic, Baby!

Answer: Green Tambourine

Written by Paul Leka and Shelley Pinz, the song was recorded by the Lemon Pipers in 1967. "Green Tambourine" used the electric sitar which had experienced a surge in popularity in psychedelia. This didn't sit well with George Harrison. In a 1966 interview with "Music Maker" he said, "What I dislike about the sitar is the way it's become the 'in thing.' I never wanted this. It's just become a part of the bandwagon, with too many people having a go with it, just to be considered 'in.'" It still managed to remain on U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for thirteen weeks and peaked at #1 on February 3, 1968!

10. What song, which broadly alluded to literary characters created by Lewis Carroll, became a smash hit for the Jefferson Airplane in 1967?

From Quiz Psychedelic Hits

Answer: White Rabbit

Despite the not so subtle allusions to LSD, "White Rabbit" became one of the first songs to sneak drug references past censors on the radio.

11. Coming in at five minutes is the somewhat mellow "Atlantis". First released in the U.S. as a B-side, it reached number seven on the Hot 100. Don't be yellow, tell me, which artist performed "Atlantis"?

From Quiz The Golden Age of Underground Radio

Answer: Donovan

"Atlantis" was Donovan's last Top 40 hit, reaching number seven. Donovan collaborated with Graham Nash, Jeff Beck, and John Paul Jones, among others, to make the album "Barabajagal", on which the song appears.

12. In 1982 an LP was released by a stoner named Stan Hubbs. It was a psychedelic rock private pressing, of which not many were made. What is the name of this LP?

From Quiz Psychedelic Music LPs

Answer: Crystal

In 1982 Stan Hubbs released his LP titled "Crystal". It was obscure and psychedelic and was never picked up by a big name label. The private label it was released on is Golden Rose Records. A few original copies were found in a thrift store in California that were sold for in the $1000.00 range. A reissue label named Companion Records, who found the original copies, released 500 reissue copies on vinyl with reproductions of the 16 page booklet that came with the originals. This LP is highly regarded by collectors. "Crystal" was originally recorded in Stan Hubbs' living room. His house/cabin was in rural Sonoma County in California. The entire LP was recorded in two sessions at the most. Stan hired a band to record it with him. Stan Hubbs was a dedicated pot smoker. He was such a stoner that it was rumored that his death was due to an overdose of marijuana.

13. What artist or band released an LP with the following songs on it? They are: "Cold Spider", "Underground Music", and "Sleepy Hollow Lane."

From Quiz Psychedelic Music: Songs And LPs

Answer: C.A. Quintet

The C.A. Quintet released their "Trip Thru Hell" LP back in 1969 on the Candy Floss label. It was produced in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their music is very psychedelic as well as being eerie, menacing, and even bordering on nightmarish. The cover art fits the music very well and is reminiscent of what hell might look like if it existed. In the past I saw a copy of this LP sell for $3,488.00. "Trip Thru Hell" is in the top ten favorite psychedelic LPs of many a big time collector of the genre. You can view photos of the cover on the internet or popsike.com. Songs can most likely be heard on youtube.com.

14. In 1969-1970 the album now considered to be the psychedelic folk holy grail was released on the Ankh label. The birth name of the artist is David Del Conte. Can you tell me the name he went by on his album and the title of the album ?

From Quiz Progressive And Psychedelic Bands And Albums

Answer: Damon And "Song Of A Gypsy"

"Song Of A Gypsy" by Damon is considered by most sellers and collectors to be the holy grail of psychedelic records. It was issued in both a single pocket cover and a gatefold cover. The gatefold is most desirable. Damon's vocals are almost crooner in style and are ethereal in the sense that they sound dreamy and even trancelike. There seems to be an ongoing fuzz guitar throughout this entire amazing album and the melodies are truly atmospheric. The songs are trippy and the percussion is unusual with an amazing exotic or Mid East feel. If you want an original copy you can expect to pay at least $3,000.00 as of 2009. There is a Damon Myspace page if you want to hear a sample of his music. I'm still not clear on the year of release. Some say 1969 and some say 1970.

15. This band covered and scored a small hit with The Zombies tune "I Love You" in 1968. Who was it?

From Quiz Off the Beaten Path Classic Psych Rock 3

Answer: People

On the band's debut which was also called "I Love You" as well as a 45.

16. Both Dust albums, their self-titled and "Harder Attack", featured which future Ramone?

From Quiz Off the Beaten Path Classic Psych Rock 1

Answer: Marc Bell

Otherwise known as Marky Ramone. Wise was in Dust, while Doubleday was in The Electric Flag, and Clary was in Fever Tree.

17. In a 1970 interview with Ed Ward of the American magazine "Rolling Stone" Roger McGuinn stated which song from "The Notorious Byrd Brothers" album was "another one of those guru-spiritual-mystic songs that no-one understood".

From Quiz Psychedelic, Baby!

Answer: Change is Now

In the 1968 album the Byrds successfully blended aspects of psychedelia, electronic and folk rock. Its use of the Moog synthesizer was one of the first times mainstream musicians embraced the previously thought of "avant-garde" sound. In the "Rolling Stone" interview McGuinn " also said [the lyrics] of 'Change Is Now' expressed a quasi-philosophical ideology which may or may not have been truly appreciated and recognized."

18. Which British band enjoyed their first hit with the 1968 psychedelic tune "Pictures of Matchstick Men"?

From Quiz Psychedelic Hits

Answer: The Status Quo

"Pictures of Matchstick Men" was the band's only U.S. hit. However after 1970 they switched to a hard rock/boogie sound and released a long string of U.K. hits through the 70s, 80s and 90s.

19. Coming up next on our list is the somewhat difficult to understand "Shootout on the Plantation". This artist's self-titled album reached number 60 in the US, not a bad showing for a session musician. Who sang (and played the piano) this 1970 hit?

From Quiz The Golden Age of Underground Radio

Answer: Leon Russell

Leon Russell started as a session musician for a wide range of artists, such as Ray Charles, Glen Campbell, The Byrds, Frank Sinatra, and The Rolling Stones. "Leon Russell" was released about four days before he accompanied Joe Cocker on the "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour.

20. This LP was released in 1969 on a private label. The band was The Leslie Brothers. Last I heard there were only three known copies. What is the title of their LP?

From Quiz Psychedelic Music LPs

Answer: Wanted

In 1969 The Leslie Brothers released their "Wanted" LP on the Cupid label, which is a private label, most likely funded by themselves. The label was from Michigan but the brothers themselves were from rural Kentucky. The music is guitar psych rock with crude fuzz and wah wah guitar. This LP has been compared to the Stud Cole LP which is another obscurity. Check youtube.com to hear the Leslie Brothers. The website has some of the most obscure music in existence on it and is the best place to start looking.

21. What artist or band released an LP with the following songs on it? They are: "A Stranger's Smile", "This Thing", and "Forge Your Own Chains."

From Quiz Psychedelic Music: Songs And LPs

Answer: D.R. Hooker

D.R. Hooker released the LP titled "The Truth" back in 1972. The band was formed in New Haven, Connecticut and the label it was released on was On Records. In the past a copy of this true rarity sold for $2,275.00 and there are only a few known copies out there. The music is very highly regarded. "Forge Your Own Chains" is considered the highlight song of the LP. The lyrics touch on drug abuse and its iniquities. The cover of the LP shows a very Messianic looking man with an acoustic guitar strapped around his shoulder. You'll find pictures of the LP on the internet and probably can find songs on youtube.com.

22. According to the Moody Blues, what is "The Best Way to Travel"?

From Quiz Are You Ready for the Acid Test?

Answer: thinking

The Moody Blues determined on their "In Search of the Lost Chord" album that thinking was the best way to travel. The progressive rock band recorded concept albums that were tightly interwoven. Before beginning work on the "Lost Chord" album, some of the band members experimented with LSD. "The Best Way to Travel" was heavy on special effects (like panning a held-note from right to left and back) and could be why "Legend of a Mind", a song about LSD guru Timothy Leary, made its way onto the album.

23. Around 1969, a band simply called Wind released an album called "Make Believe" on Life Records. It is said the main performer of this band went on to a successful pop career. Who is that performer?

From Quiz Off the Beaten Path Classic Psych Rock 4

Answer: Tony Orlando

It is said this is Tony Orlando's group prior to forming Dawn in the 70s.

24. Which 1967 hit song included the following lyrics: "What will we do there? - We'll get high - What will we touch there? - We'll touch the sky"?

From Quiz Psychedelic Hits

Answer: Itchycoo Park

The song by the Small Faces was one of the first pop singles to use flanging, an audio effect produced by mixing two identical signals together, one signal delayed by a small and gradually changing period creating a lush 'swooshing' phase effect.

25. Another huge hit as a single is 1967's "Get Together". Which band performed this flower power hit tune?

From Quiz The Golden Age of Underground Radio

Answer: The Youngbloods

The song was originally recorded by The Kingston Trio in 1964 as "Let's Get Together". The Youngbloods' version was released twice, reaching number five in 1969. This is by far the most well-known version today.

26. In 1970 Negative Space released an LP on the private Castle label. What is the title of this LP?

From Quiz Psychedelic Music LPs

Answer: Hard, Heavy, Mean & Evil

In 1970 Negative Space released their "Hard, Heavy, Mean & Evil" LP on the private Castle label. The band was from New Jersey. The music is heavy, raw, psychedelic rock with fuzz (distorted) and wah wah guitar. Original copies are rare. I saw one sell on eBay for $362.00 in 2006 and the condition was not the best. In 1984 the LP was reissued on vinyl and it must be rare because I saw a reissue copy sell for $162.00. Eventually there was a CD reissue made. It included the original eight tracks plus from the LP plus an additional ten tracks. Among the bonus tracks were covers of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode", The Doors' "Light My Fire", Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze", and Steppenwolf's "The Pusher".

27. What Jesus music artist or band released an LP with the following songs on it? They are: "Dreamers", "Wicked", and "What Shall We Do."

From Quiz Psychedelic Music: Songs And LPs

Answer: Concrete Rubber Band

The Xian group Concrete Rubber Band released their "Risen Savior" LP on the American Artists label in 1974. It is an extremely rare LP that is highly sought after by collectors. In the past I've seen a copy sell for $2,310.00. There is a book called "Acid Archives" that gives details about rare and obscure LPs. A few things mentioned in the book about this LP are: "Amazing murky basement lo-fi head trip from the furthest depths of the Christian underground", "Droning psychedelic DIY excursions with a strong ritual undercurrent as though recorded by some primitive society", "Halting harpsichord and spooky organ", and "This is what the band Stone Harbour might have sounded like if they'd dropped enough acid to actually meet Jesus in person, and returned to their cavern studio on an even smaller budget." In the past I've seen a copy of "Risen Savior" sell for $2310.00.

28. In 1969 on the Onyx label a psychedelic album was released titled "Corridor Of Faces" by Lazy Smoke. The singer's vocals are a dead ringer for what famous musician?

From Quiz Progressive And Psychedelic Bands And Albums

Answer: John Lennon

Lazy Smoke was a band from Massachusetts that had a singer who could sound eerily like John Lennon. Their music was Beatlesque psychedelia and had a definite British sound to it. Studio tricks were used in the album's production. Backwards guitar, dreamy vocals, church organ. Sort of like the Beatles "Sgt. Peppers" album except that this one is lo-fi. Many think the album overrated but it's quite nice to my ears.

29. Regarding the famous self titled Berkeley EP, "Frumious Bandersnatch", what is it that made this extended play record a bit special ?

From Quiz Psychedelic Bands And LPs

Answer: When held to the light it showed purple in color.

Frumious Bandersnatch were a San Francisco band who never made it, though should have. Arriving later on the scene than Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Grateful Dead or Moby Grape, they missed the boat so fame and fortune was not in their cards. Their EP was purple in color which was noticeable when held up to the light and was released in 1967. This was their sole release and was a 7 inch EP. Songs were "Cheshire", "Hearts To Cry" and "Misty Cloudy." Their music was a festive and soulful liquid-light swirl of long and freaky jams, catchy guitar riffs, melting leads, and strong male/female vocal harmonies that gave the band its unique sound within the realm of Haight/Ashbury Acid Rock.

30. Who produced the debut LP, "Feelin' Groovy", of Harper's Bizarre in 1967?

From Quiz Off the Beaten Path Classic Psych Rock 4

Answer: Lenny Waronker

Templeton was actually in the band at the time and would become a huge producer later on. Lange had nothing to do with them and Newman had a guest spot on the band's third album, "The Secret Life".
