Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1975, not 1972, a band named Crystalaugur that consisted of American teenagers, released an LP in Singapore on a private label. What is the title of their LP?

Answer: Terranaut

In 1975, Crystalauger released 200 copies of their LP titled "Terranaut" on the private Warped label. The band consisted of American teenagers whose LP was released in Singapore. Most believe the LP was released in 1972 but according to an online interview with the rhythm guitarist, he says it was released in 1975.

The music is very amateurish sounding and instruments seem out of tune at times, but the album is highly regarded and sells for roughly $500-$600. Check youtube.com to hear some of the LP's songs.
2. In 1982 an LP was released by a stoner named Stan Hubbs. It was a psychedelic rock private pressing, of which not many were made. What is the name of this LP?

Answer: Crystal

In 1982 Stan Hubbs released his LP titled "Crystal". It was obscure and psychedelic and was never picked up by a big name label. The private label it was released on is Golden Rose Records.
A few original copies were found in a thrift store in California that were sold for in the $1000.00 range.
A reissue label named Companion Records, who found the original copies, released 500 reissue copies on vinyl with reproductions of the 16 page booklet that came with the originals. This LP is highly regarded by collectors.
"Crystal" was originally recorded in Stan Hubbs' living room. His house/cabin was in rural Sonoma County in California. The entire LP was recorded in two sessions at the most. Stan hired a band to record it with him.
Stan Hubbs was a dedicated pot smoker. He was such a stoner that it was rumored that his death was due to an overdose of marijuana.
3. This LP was released in 1969 on a private label. The band was The Leslie Brothers. Last I heard there were only three known copies. What is the title of their LP?

Answer: Wanted

In 1969 The Leslie Brothers released their "Wanted" LP on the Cupid label, which is a private label, most likely funded by themselves. The label was from Michigan but the brothers themselves were from rural Kentucky.
The music is guitar psych rock with crude fuzz and wah wah guitar. This LP has been compared to the Stud Cole LP which is another obscurity.
Check youtube.com to hear the Leslie Brothers. The website has some of the most obscure music in existence on it and is the best place to start looking.
4. In 1970 Negative Space released an LP on the private Castle label. What is the title of this LP?

Answer: Hard, Heavy, Mean & Evil

In 1970 Negative Space released their "Hard, Heavy, Mean & Evil" LP on the private Castle label. The band was from New Jersey. The music is heavy, raw, psychedelic rock with fuzz (distorted) and wah wah guitar. Original copies are rare. I saw one sell on eBay for $362.00 in 2006 and the condition was not the best.

In 1984 the LP was reissued on vinyl and it must be rare because I saw a reissue copy sell for $162.00. Eventually there was a CD reissue made. It included the original eight tracks plus from the LP plus an additional ten tracks. Among the bonus tracks were covers of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode", The Doors' "Light My Fire", Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze", and Steppenwolf's "The Pusher".
5. In 1970 the band Electric Toilet released an LP on the Nasco label. What is the name of the LP?

Answer: In The Hands Of Karma

Electric Toilet released "In The Hands Of Karma" in 1970 on the Nasco label. Despite the hefty price on original vinyl copies, the general consensus seems to be that it is an overhyped and overpriced LP. There is one song on the LP that is the psychedelic standout and it's titled "Within Your State Of Mind". Check youtube.com first if you want to hear it.

The rest of the LP is more in a bluesy rock vein. Unfortunately, the following year after this LP was finished, two of the band members were killed in an automobile accident. One was Grady Pannel who was the vocalist and very skilled at the Wurlitzer and Moog.

The other was guitarist Wayne Reynolds.
6. In 1971 a band named Hot Poop released a psychedelic rock LP on the Hot Poop Productions label. What is the title of their LP?

Answer: Does Their Own Stuff!

Hot Poop released their "Does Their Own Stuff!" LP in 1971 on their own Hot Poop Productions label. This is a strange record indeed. The music is psychedelic rock with fuzz guitar throughout the LP. Some describe it as experimental acid psych.
The singer had no experience with singing. His own mother told him he couldn't sing but he went ahead with the LP anyway. When the first song begins, falsetto vocals kick in, not unlike how Bugs Bunny might sound after breathing in helium. There is musical influence from Frank Zappa as well as Captain Beefheart.
The band's name came from a very short song on Frank Zappa And The Mothers' LP "We're Only In It For The Money".
The Hot Poop LP's cover is bizarre as are the song titles. The cover shows the one female band member whose head is actually hers, but the rest of her is male. The male members also have their own heads but they appear female from the neck down.
This LP isn't for everyone but there are those who love it. Expect to pay three figures for this LP. It is rare as only 500 copies were pressed.
7. In 1970 a band named Fresh Blueberry Pancake released a promo/demo only LP. What is the title of this LP?

Answer: Heavy

In 1970 Fresh Blueberry Pancake released their LP titled "Heavy". It was a promo only pressing in the amount of 52 or 54 copies. I read several articles and half said 52 and the other half 54.
Promo LPs are meant to be distributed to radio stations and record stores. This LP came in a cream colored cover with an orange bumper sticker on front that read "Fresh Blueberry Pancake - Heavy".
The music is heavy psychedelic rock with plenty of fuzz/distorted lead guitar. The band is a trio from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They recorded most of the LP in one take with no overdubbing! In 2010 an original copy of "Heavy" sold for $7,000.00. At one time a record dealer had a copy on his list for $40,000.00. This LP has been reissued on vinyl and CD. The CDs are inexpensive.
8. In 1976 Vyto B came out with a psychedelic record on the Clay Pigeon Records label. What is its title?

Answer: Tricentennial 2076

In 1976 Vyto B released his second album titled "Tricentennial 2076 " on the ultra-obscure Clay Pigeon Records label. He did also release an LP in 1972 titled "First Chips". There's not a lot of information out there regarding Vyto or his albums.
I've found various opinions and spellings of his actual name. Vyto Baleska, Vyto Beleska, and Vytautas Beleska. He is from the suburbs of Chicago.
"Tricentennial 2076 " is a concept album that takes place 100 years in the future in a "New America". It is 2076 because the LP was originally released in 1976. Musically it's diverse. It is psychedelic but it's also very experimental. Try youtube.com to hear what it sounds like. The website has a lot of very rare music on it that can be listened to at no charge.
9. In 1978, Jem Targal, former vocalist and bass player for the band The Third Power, released an LP on the Sheavy label. What is the title of that LP?

Answer: Luckey Guy

Jem Targal released his LP titled "Luckey Guy" in 1978 on the Sheavy label. In the past Jem was the singer, bass player, and songwriter for a band named Third Power. That band was a power trio from Detroit who released their only LP in 1969. It is an LP that interests collectors today. Third Power managed to stay together until 1972 with no success.

At that point Jem started doing a lot of home recording on his four track machine. He then took what he thought were the best of the songs that he had taped and released them on his "Luckey Guy" LP.

The whole affair was a do-it-yourself project. He glued the covers himself and handled all of the sales as well. The music was influenced by musicians like Syd Barrett and Skip Spence. Original copies of "Luckey Guy" are very rare and have sold for close to $500.00. Check youtube.com and you'll probably find songs from the LP you can listen to.
10. In 1970 a band named Lumbee released an LP on the Radnor label. What is the title of this album?

Answer: Overdose

Lumbee released their "Overdose" LP in 1970 on the Radnor label. It originally came with a board game titled "Overdose" which was similar to Monopoly for people who were under the influence. The idea of this game was to start "dealerships" and sell drugs to accumulate money.

Their instructions state: "No one who intends to stay straight may play". They also say that a lit joint or pipe is the one essential item not included with the game. The band had a male and female vocalist who produced quite lovely harmonies.

The music itself is heavy psych or acid psych. The LP had a single titled "Streets Of Gold" that actually reached number one in various locations in the U.S. It looks like Lumbee had Cheech and Chong beat by a few years.
11. In 1967 a band named Unfolding put out a trippy psychedelic LP on the Audio Fidelity label. What is the title of their album?

Answer: How To Blow Your Mind And Have A Freakout Party

In 1967 the psychedelic band Unfolding released "How To Blow Your Mind And Have A Freakout Party" on the Audio Fidelirt label. Musically the LP was meant to be an aural recreation of an acid trip without the use of drugs. To quote a friend who has passed on and wrote a book titled "Psychedelia": "'Psychedelic music' basically means the band was influenced by psychedelic drugs, which would be LSD and mushrooms and things like that.

The bands had these experiences and it started influencing their music". Check the internet to hear some Unfolding songs. Youtube.com usually has Unfolding.

The consensus is that the opening song, "I've Got A Zebra / She Can Fly", is an excellent example of psychedelic music and is a recommended listen.
12. In 1983 Mag-Amplitude from Oklahoma put out an LP of hard rock/psychedelic music. What is the title of this LP?

Answer: Wizards Of Today

In 1983 Mag-Amplitude released an LP of hard rock/psychedelic music titled "Wizards Of Today". It was self released by the artist on his own private label. Don't let the date fool you. It's a highly regarded LP that has sold for over $2,000.00. The main man behind Mag-Amplitude was tracked down and he said that only 200 copies were made and they were handed out to record stores and to anyone else who would take one.

He was almost totally blind when the record was made and has long since been completely blind.

There is no other information I could find on this LP.
13. In 1967 a band named The Sound Of The Reign released a garage/psych LP on a private label. What is the name of their LP?

Answer: Reigned Out

In 1967 The Sound Of The Reign released their "Reigned Out" LP on a private label named Wilber Records out of Duluth, Minnesota. Duluth is the town that Bob Dylan is from. There is very little information out there regarding this LP. It's extremely rare and there are only two or three known copies. I saw one sell for $5,000.00.
I have not heard any of this LP. At one time youtube.com had The Sound Of The Reign's version of "Purple Haze" on their website.
I've seen the music described as frat rock with organ and a club feel to it. The copy that sold for $5,000.00 said in the ad that the music had a raw garage psych rock sound with tripped out effects. The songs on the LP are standards of the era and it is thought that the band consisted of East Coast kids enrolled in a Midwestern college.
14. In 1982 a band named Terence & Tight Wire released a psych rock LP. What was the title of this release?

Answer: The Eighth Day

Terence & Tight Wire released "The Eight Day" in 1982 on their own Win Records label. This was a promotional LP and Promotional Album was printed on the record label. This is an extremely rare LP and there are only a handful of copies known to exist. Terence was a huge Jimi Hendrix fan and this LP was based on the second coming of Jimi. On the eighth day he was going to rise up from his grave to play a final concert.

There is some good distorted wah-wah guitar on this LP. Youtube.com is a good place to check if you want to hear a song from this LP.

At one time the title track was on there.
15. In 1969 the C.A. Quintet released a very psychedelic LP on the Candy Floss label. What is the title of this LP?

Answer: A Trip Thru Hell

Anyone into psychedelic music will know this one. The C.A. Quintet released "A Trip Thru Hell" on the obscure Candy Floss label from 1969. This is psychedelia at its best and may be "THE" quintessential psych LP. It is revered and sought after by collectors. The only issue with buying an original vinyl pressing is the $3,000.00 price tag. It has been reissued several times and one of the reissues has plenty of bonus tracks.
The cover art lets you know what you're in for. It appears to be an apocalyptic, surreal, red world of suffering, reminiscent of Dante's Inferno. The music takes you there too. It's dark, eerie, haunting, ominous, paranoid, mysterious, otherworldly, and terrifying. It can also be downright evil at times. There are disturbingly creepy background vocals, distorted guitar, eerie organ, screams, a church bell, trumpet, and all manner of psychedelic effects.
Ken Erwin, the brilliant mind behind this LP, said that one of the things he wanted to get across with this music, is that Hell could be right here on earth in our daily life. Check youtube.com for songs from this LP. There's a good chance of finding them there.
