Hidden Words Trivia Questions

1. Go dig in the Garden to find the roots of religion.

From Quiz
Hidden Words - Genesis

Answer: God

"GO Dig." The Bible opens with God creating light and the earth and everything upon it. Every culture seems to have the heritage of a creation story. In Hinduism, the God Brahma dropped a seed into the ocean and the seed becomes a golden egg. In China, a hairy ogre with horns swings a giant axe and splits yin from yang. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light." - Genesis 1, v 1-3

Prior to becoming disciples, Peter and Andrew were fishermen. In Mark 1:17, when Jesus extended an invitation to the brothers to become disciples, He is quoted as saying "follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men." Peter was outgoing and bombastic where as Andrew was quiet and reserved, going by accounts given in the four Gospels.

From Quiz Old Testament King and Queen Names Inside Words

Answer: Ahab

King Ahab, the husband of Jezebel, is the correct answer. According to Scripture, Jezebel was an evil influence over the throne of her husband. Jezebel is regarded as a villain in the Old Testament because she played a pivotal role in convincing Ahab to stop worshiping God and to start worshiping Baal. (See 1 Kings 21:25.) She also had a number of prophets killed, as per 1 Kings 18:4. Ahab is perhaps best known for being the main adversary of Elijah. He is also known for being part of the account involving the killing of Naboth. As per 1 Kings 21:1-16, Jezebel orchestrated things so Naboth was stoned to death giving Ahab the opportunity to take control of his land which was used as a vineyard.

Eden, as in the Garden of Eden, is the correct answer. Details about the garden appear in Genesis 2 and 3. According to Scripture, the garden was inhabited by Adam and Eve but their stay was short lived when "the serpent" convinced the woman to eat fruit from the forbidden tree of knowledge of good and evil. Adam quickly followed suit and the two were driven out of the garden. Scripture goes on to say hardships for the two became a reality of every day life.

7. Can you find the name of the New Testament female character in the sentence below? News anchor Hoda Kotb, a native of Norman, Oklahoma, is a co-host with Kathie Lee Gifford on the American TV program The Today Show.

From Quiz New Testament Names of Women Inside Words

Answer: Rhoda

Rhoda is the correct answer. She was the servant girl who went to answer the door after Peter's miraculous escape from prison and got so excited when she heard Peter's voice that she went to tell the other occupants he was at the door and left him knocking. She will be always remembered as the highly excitable girl who let her mind wander from the task at hand. It's a good thing Peter was not being chased by would-be captors, as he would have been chopped liver having to stand at the door of the house trying to get in while Rhoda was busy telling everyone else the latest news. The story in Acts 12:12-16 almost smacks of a scene from a Hollywood sitcom.

8. Can you find the name of the New Testament character hidden in this sentence? A calm Arkansas River is a sight seldom seen in Colorado in spring when the winter snow melts.

From Quiz New Testament Names Inside Words

Answer: Mark

Mark, also known as John Mark, is the correct answer. He served along side Paul and Barnabas, his cousin. It's interesting to note Mark and Paul had a falling out as Mark apparently deserted Paul during a missionary trip. As a result, Paul refused to follow the advice of Barnabas and take Mark on a second missionary journey. No details are given in Scripture about Mark's desertion, but it's apparent Barnabas thought he deserved another chance to serve on a missionary journey and Paul felt differently. Acts 15:38 simply states Mark abandoned Paul in Pamphylia. Scripture reports Paul opted to take Silas with him and Barnabas and Mark headed off on their own to Cyprus. It's also interesting to note Mark would end up redeeming himself in Paul's eyes. In 2 Timothy 4:11, Paul tells Timothy to "get Mark and bring him with you, because he is useful to me for my ministry." There is no smoking gun, but many theologians believe the Gospel of Mark was written by John Mark. Although his name was John Mark, he is often referred to in Scripture as simply Mark. The Gospel of Mark tells more about what Jesus did, rather than what He said. Notes in the NIV Study Bible sum up things this way: "Mark moves quickly from one episode in Jesus' life and ministry to another, using the word immediately."

Answer: James

James, the brother of John, is the correct answer. They are also referred to as the sons of Zebedee in Scripture. Not much is known about Zebedee is he is mentioned in passing reference. According to Matthew 4:21, he was a fisherman, just like his sons James and John. Theologians believe his wife's name was Salome. James, along with James and Peter, were part of the Inner Circle, people who had an extra close relationship with Christ. For example, the three men were taken by Jesus to the Mount of Transfiguration, as documented in Mark 9:2-13. Out of the twelve disciples, James was the first to be executed. (Judas Iscariot was the first to die, but he committed suicide, as per Matthew 27:3-9.) From Quiz Old Testament King and Queen Names Inside Words

Answer: David

David, the shepherd boy who slew Goliath and ascended to become king, is the correct answer. Although David's story smacks of success, his life was filled with considerable heartache and bitter disappointment. For example, he committed adultery with Bathsheba and then orchestrated the murder of her husband Uriah, only to be confronted by the prophet Nathan. The account of Nathan confronting David is found in the 12th chapter of 2 Samuel. He used a parable to make David aware of the seriousness of his sin when he committed adultery followed by murder. Nathan then made the pronouncement that the child who would be born as a result of the adulterous affair would die, and sure enough it came to pass. On top of this, David was involved in a full-scale coup attempt when his son Absalom rose up and attempted to oust him. Details about the coup attempt, with Israel plunged into a bloody civil war, can be found in 2 Samuel 15 through to chapter 18. Civil war was nothing new for David, however. According to Scripture, he became king of Israel when a civil war erupted with one side backing him and the other side backing Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, the first king of Israel. Ish-bosheth reigned for two years after being proclaimed king. David's forces would eventually win and the rest, as they say, is history.

14. Can you find the name of the New Testament book in the sentence below? With time quickly running out in the televised trivia contest, the contestant found she was in a jam, especially since she had used all her 'life lines'.

From Quiz New Testament Book Names Inside Words

Answer: James

Although the book is named after James, no one knows for sure who he was. Some believe the book was written by the half-brother of Jesus while others insist the brother of John was the author. Other possibilities are James, the son of Alphaeus and James the father of the apostle called Judas. Notes in the NKJV Study Bible also state James was a common name in the days of the early church. The beginning sentence in the book says "James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ." With that claim, James could have been practically any Christian with such a name.

15. Can you find the New Testament placename in the sentence below? It was a classic question asked back in 1972 in a song by the Australian/English rock band the Bee Gees: "How can a loser ever win?"

Verses 7 and 8 in the second chapter of John tell of Jesus instructing people to fill a number of jars with water and then to draw some out and give a sample to the master of the banquet. After tasting the liquid, the master expresses surprise at how fine the wine is. In verse 10, the master compliments the bridegroom, stating "everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." According to the Thompson Chain-Reference Study Bible, Cana was west of the Sea of Galilee and about ten miles north of Nazareth.

From Quiz Old Testament Placenames Inside Words

Answer: Carmel

Mount Carmel was the location of Elijah's victory over the prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18. According to Scripture, Elijah and the prophets of Baal had a showdown to see who could call upon a higher power to ignite a sacrificial offering on Mount Carmel. The 450 prophets called on Baal and Elijah called on the LORD with Elijah being the clear winner, according to Scripture. Carmel was such a lovely place that Solomon even compares the beauty of a bride to it. Song of Solomon 7:5, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel, and the hair of your head is like purple; a king is held captive by your tresses."

From Quiz New Testament Names of Women Inside Words

Answer: Herodias

Herodias was not only conniving, but extremely vindictive. When she left her first husband (Herod Phillip I) and married his half brother Herod Antipas, John the Baptist was disgusted and denounced the union, according to the 14th chapter of Matthew. As a result, Herod ordered the arrest of John the Baptist and from this point on, his fate was sealed as Herodias had him in her clutches. Matthew 14:6-12 reports Herod hosted a lavish birthday party for himself and when Herodias' daughter danced at the reception, Herod was so pleased he told the girl he would give her whatever she asked for. Verse 8, in the NKJV Bible, states: "So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter'." Verse 11 goes on to tell of this macabre scene: "And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother."

From Quiz Old Testament Names of Women Inside Words

Answer: Tamar

Tamar experienced many things in her lifetime, not the least of which were the deaths of her first two husbands, Er and Onan, who were struck down by the LORD, as per Genesis 38:6-10. The two men were sons of Judah. However, after the two sons died, Judah apparently thought Tamar was a prostitute when he met up with her along the side of a road and as a result of the union, she gave birth to twins Perez and Zerah. (Scripture reports her face was covered during intercourse.) About three months later, when it was reported Tamar was pregnant and proclaimed a prostitute, Judah announced she should be brought out and "burned to death." However, Judah had to do some serious backpedaling when Tamar was able to prove he was actually the man who had impregnated her. (Genesis 38:18 states Judah had given Tamar his "seal and its cord, and the staff in his hand" as a pledge before he slept with her. When she was about to be put to death, she was able to produce Judah's pledge to her and her life was spared.) According to Wikipedia, Tamar means 'date palm' in Hebrew and is the original form of the names Tamara and Tammy.

19. Can you find the name of the New Testament character hidden in this sentence? A joyful ukelele sound emanated from the stage after Tiny Tim started his performance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

From Quiz New Testament Names Inside Words

Answer: Luke

Luke was a worker in the early church who often labored behind the scenes with Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. He is credited with writing the Gospel of Luke and Acts. The Gospel of Luke contains a number of accounts which don't appear elsewhere. For example, details about the dying thief on the cross being assured he would enter paradise and the healing of the ten lepers are found in only Luke. Details about the parables of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son are also found only in Luke. Meanwhile, the book of Acts is seen by many as a history of the beginning of the early church in Turkey and Europe. Luke is one of my favorite Bible characters, this even though many simply regard him as a writer of two books and not as one of the men actively involved in working for the early church. Feel free to play a quiz I have posted at FunTrivia about Luke. The quiz is called 'Let's Look at Luke -- Historian, Church Worker.'

However, David's forces eventually ruled supreme and after the death of Ishbosheth, he became king of the entire nation of Israel. "Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." - Genesis 2, v 7

But Jesus answered and said to him, 'Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.' Then he allowed Him. Eliezer came from Damascus, as per Genesis 15:2. Many theologians believe Eliezer was the unnamed senior servant who found a wife for Isaac. In Genesis 24, the unnamed servant is requested by Abraham to go to the land of his relatives to get a wife for his son. Genesis 24:12-14 tells of the servant praying in this matter. The passage, in the NKJV Bible, states: "Then he said, 'O LORD God of my master Abraham, please give me success this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. Behold, here I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Now let it be that the young woman to whom I say, 'Please let down your pitcher that I may drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink' -- let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And by this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master." Verse 15 goes on to state that before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. Pilate's wife was troubled by a dream she had about Jesus and passed the information onto her husband. Matthew 27:19 in the NKJV states: "While he [Pilate] was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, 'Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.'" 28. Pilate might have freed Jesus, but the crowd had the veto and set someone else free.

From Quiz Hidden Words - Genesis

Answer: Eve

"thE VEto" Eve is the first woman in the Bible and therefore identified as the mother of all humankind. There is a conversation in theology about a woman called Lilith, supposed in Jewish tradition to be an earlier wife of Adam, but no such mention of Lilith appears in the book of Genesis itself. In Genesis 2, woman, Eve, is created fully grown from one of Adam's ribs. It is reminiscent of the Greek goddess Athena being born fully grown and wearing armour, stepping right out of Zeus her father's forehead after it was axed in two by Hephaestus. In Greek mythology, Zeus and Athena create the first woman, Pandora. Like Eve eating the fruit from the forbidden tree, Pandora opens the forbidden box and releases chaos. "So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man." - Genesis 2, v 21-22 "Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living." - Genesis 3, v 20

Answer: Thomas

Thomas, of course, is remembered for having major doubts about initial reports from others about seeing the resurrected Christ after the crucifixion. His doubts, however, disappeared forever, when according to John 20:24-29, Jesus appeared before Thomas and the other disciples while they were meeting in a locked room. John 20:26-29, in the NKJV Bible, states: "And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, 'Peace to you!' Then He said to Thomas, 'Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.' And Thomas answered and said to Him, 'My Lord and my God!' Jesus said to him, 'Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed'."
