Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Can you find the name of the New Testament female character in the sentence below? News anchor Hoda Kotb, a native of Norman, Oklahoma, is a co-host with Kathie Lee Gifford on the American TV program The Today Show.

Answer: Rhoda

Rhoda is the correct answer. She was the servant girl who went to answer the door after Peter's miraculous escape from prison and got so excited when she heard Peter's voice that she went to tell the other occupants he was at the door and left him knocking.

She will be always remembered as the highly excitable girl who let her mind wander from the task at hand. It's a good thing Peter was not being chased by would-be captors, as he would have been chopped liver having to stand at the door of the house trying to get in while Rhoda was busy telling everyone else the latest news.

The story in Acts 12:12-16 almost smacks of a scene from a Hollywood sitcom.
2. Can you find the name of the New Testament female character in the sentence below? In the words of the soft-spoken Canadian hero, Diaspora -- the mass dispersions of people like the Jews -- "must never, never, never ever" take place again.

Answer: Herodias

Herodias was not only conniving, but extremely vindictive. When she left her first husband (Herod Phillip I) and married his half brother Herod Antipas, John the Baptist was disgusted and denounced the union, according to the 14th chapter of Matthew. As a result, Herod ordered the arrest of John the Baptist and from this point on, his fate was sealed as Herodias had him in her clutches.

Matthew 14:6-12 reports Herod hosted a lavish birthday party for himself and when Herodias' daughter danced at the reception, Herod was so pleased he told the girl he would give her whatever she asked for. Verse 8, in the NKJV Bible, states: "So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head here on a platter'."

Verse 11 goes on to tell of this macabre scene: "And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother."
3. Can you find the name of the New Testament female character in the sentence below? "The film Salo, means trash," the movie review critic wrote in a highly scathing review. "Many people describe it as one of the most disgusting films of all time -- and that's saying a mouthful."

Answer: Salome

Salome is the correct answer. Not much is known about her as she is mentioned in passing reference in the Bible. Mark 15:40 tells of her being at the crucifixion scene with Mary, the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene as well as Mary, the mother of James the Less and Joses. Verse 41 goes on to state the women had followed Christ and and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee.

Meanwhile, Mark 16:1 tells of Salome going to Christ's tomb after the crucifixion. She was accompanying Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James and Joses. However, when they got to the tomb, they discovered Christ was no longer in the tomb, but had risen from the dead, according to Scripture.

The world would never be the same.
4. Can you find the name of the New Testament female character in the sentence below? Bartek Odias, a blogger, web designer, photographer and environmentalist, visited Germany where he acquired some dollars from the EU. Odias then exchanged the money into yen before visiting Japan.

Answer: Euodia

Yes, Euodia, who was at loggerheads with Syntyche, is the correct answer. The disagreement must have been severe as Paul "implores" the two women to agree with each other in the NKJV Bible (Philippians 4:2). In the same verse, he asks believers in Philippi to help Euodia and Syntyche. Scripture doesn't say why the two women were at loggerheads. (It all brings back memories of a message I head at the Salvation Army Citadel in Nanaimo, B.C., a number of years ago when a lieutenant preached a message about 'My Phobia' and 'So Touchy' being at logger heads. The message, of course, was a play on words in regards to Euodia and Syntyche and how people like them can be easily found in today's church.)

Incidentally, the name Euodia is used by the NKJV and the NIV while the KJV uses Euodias.
5. Can you find the name of the New Testament female character in the sentence below? Wearing a colorful blouse and capris, Cilla Black of British TV fame signed autographs for admirers outside Harrod's department store in London.

Answer: Priscilla

Make no mistake about it. Priscilla was a dynamic person in the early church. Her husband Aquila is never mentioned without her and often her name appears before her husband's name in the books the apostle Paul is credited with writing. And this at a time when women were regarded as grossly inferior and not even included in census figures!

In Romans 16:4, Paul writes Priscilla and Aquila "risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles."

The exploits of Priscilla and Aquila are reported in the 18th chapter of Acts. Paul also mentions the dynamic duo in 1 Corinthians 16:19 and in 2 Timothy 4:19. (Feel free to play another Bible quiz I have posted at FunTrivia about the couple. It's called 'The Dynamic Duo -- Priscilla and Aquila'.)
6. Can you find the name of the New Testament female character in the sentence below? According to an Internet search, loess "is a geologically recent deposit of silt or material which is usually yellowish or brown in color and consisting of tiny mineral particles brought by wind to the places where they now lie."

Answer: Chloe

According to 1 Corinthians 1:11, members of Chloe's household made the apostle Paul aware of divisions in the church at Corinth. However, little is known about her as she is mentioned in passing reference. In 1 Corinthians 1:11, Paul, in the NKJV, writes: "For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe's household, that there are contentions among you." Paul then goes on to exhort the believers at Corinth to end their bickering.
7. Can you find the name of the New Testament female character in the two sentences below? The teacher confessed at one time she didn't enjoy marking the Grade 12 student's essays because of his poor grammar. "Thankfully, the student worked extra hard and there was immense improvement," the teacher said.

Answer: Martha

Martha, the sister of Mary and Lazarus, was both industrious and irritable, Scripture indicates. Meanwhile, her sister Mary would be best described as insightful. The two sisters earned such a reputation as per the events in Luke 10:38-42. Scripture tells of Mary sitting at Jesus' feet listening to Him while Martha was busy preparing food for the guests. As a result, Martha became annoyed with the situation and requested Jesus to order her sister to lend a helping hand.

Luke 10:38-42, in the NKJV, reports things this way: "Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, 'Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.' And Jesus answered and said to her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.'"
8. Can you find the name of the New Testament female character in the sentence below? The Prince Edward Island farmer wielded a long turnip hoe bearing considerable animosity against the weeds that invaded his market garden after a weekend of rain.

Answer: Phoebe

Not much is known about Phoebe as she is mentioned in only passing reference by Paul in Romans 16:1-2. However, it's apparent she was a moving force in the early church. In the NKJV, Paul writes: "I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea, that you may receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her in whatever business she has need of you; for indeed she has been a helper of many and of myself also."

The 16th chapter of Romans contains a list of 'Joe' and 'Jane' Christians who Paul singles our for praise.
9. Can you find the name of the New Testament female character in the two sentences below? The new parents were stumped and couldn't come up with a suitable name for their new born baby girl. The issue was solved, however, when a close friend told them to try Phena as a name for the baby as it would honour her Greek heritage.

Answer: Tryphena

Tryphena is just one of a number of people listed in the 16th chapter of Romans. According to notes in the NKJV Study Bible, it is "generally considered" Tryphena was Tryphosa's sister. In Romans 16:12, Paul writes, "Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, who have labored in the Lord." As stated in the answer to Question 8, Romans 16 contains a list of personal greetings Paul sends to believers in Rome.
10. Can you find the name of the New Testament female character in the sentences below? It was as if I was addicted. On my cell phone it seemed I was always using an app. 'Hiatus time', I told my self.

Answer: Apphia

There is no smoking gun, but Apphia is believed to be the wife of Philemon. Paul begins the letter to Philemon in the NKJV Bible this way: "To Philemon our beloved friend and fellow laborer, to the beloved Apphia, Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house." Many theologians believe Apphia is his wife and Archippus is their son. Scripture, however, does not provide any details about Apphia or Archippus. (I highly recommend three quizzes posted on FunTrivia about Philemon. One is by CellarDoor and the second is by Glendathecat.

The third quiz was compelled by my friends connected with the quiz team Bible Believers Brigade. Simply use the word 'Philemon' in the search template and you'll quickly find the three quizzes.)
