Molloy was a big-bodied key position player with the ability to turn a game in a short matter of time. Initially drafted by Fitzroy, where he was nominated for the AFL's Rising Star award, he became a Brisbane Lion when the Fitzroy merged with the Brisbane club in 1997. He played 59 games with Fitzroy and 61 with Brisbane, where he was the club's leading goalkicker in 1999. He would finish his career playing 49 games for Collingwood and surprising most pundits by finishing runner-up in the 2001 Copeland Trophy.

The Bears would become the Brisbane Lions in 1997. In all Akermanis played 248 games for the club.

Australia does, however, compete against Ireland in a series that uses modified rules, adopting features from both the Australian game and the Irish Gaelic version. Jim Stynes was a star in the Irish game and blazed a trail by heading to Australia to play "Aussie Rules". He became a star in that arena as well. Appropriately, a medal was struck to recognise the best player in the international series. Ash McGrath, a veteran of 214 games with the Lions and a premiership player for the team in 2003, played as a forward in the 2013 series and was largely instrumental in Australia's success.

His courage saw him win the Robert Rose Medal (for Most Courageous) in 2007, 2008 and 2011. His courage, however, did come at a cost and he battled a series of injuries during his career including a horrific facial injury in 2011.
