F1 GP 2010s Trivia Questions

1. Lewis Hamilton claimed his fifth world championship title in 2018 to equal the achievements of which legendary former F1 racer?

From Quiz
F1 in 2018 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Juan Manuel Fangio

Lewis Hamilton's 2018 F1 drivers' championship victory brought him level on titles won with the legendary Argentinian racer Juan Manuel Fangio. Hamilton's five titles came while driving for two different teams over a ten year period - 2008 with McLaren and 2014-15 and 2017-18 with Mercedes. By contrast, Fangio never won the title with exactly the same team - he took his first title in 1951 with Alfa Romeo and then won four back-to-back titles from 1954 to 1957 for Maserati/Mercedes (he won two races for Maserati and then completed the season with Mercedes), Mercedes, Lancia and Maserati respectively. Fangio's exploits earned him the nickname of 'El Maestro' and his record of five world championships remained undefeated for nearly 50 years until Michael Schumacher secured his sixth title in 2003. His racing career began in the 1930s, long before the first F1 world championship was held in 1950, and was interrupted by the Second World War - it can only be surmised how many titles he might have won if F1 had begun earlier.

2. Fans of which driver got to witness an unexpected extra season for their hero in 2017, after he had originally announced his retirement at the end of 2016?

From Quiz F1 in 2017 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Felipe Massa

Towards the end of the 2016 season, Felipe Massa announced that he planned to leave the Williams team and retire from F1 at the end of the season. He was duly given an emotional send off from the sport at the penultimate race of the season in his home country of Brazil, which included a guard of honour in the pit lane and a standing ovation from rival teams as he was forced to walk back to his garage after a mid-race accident. However, the surprise retirement of the 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg just days after the end of the season led to an unexpected vacancy at Williams and Massa coming out of what must be one of the shortest retirements in F1 history to fill the gap. Massa's 2017 season was solid, if not spectacular, with a best result of sixth place and numerous points-scoring finishes, and he again announced his intention to retire at the end of it. His 2017 race in Brazil proved to be a happier send off than the 2016 version as he finished the race in seventh place - the "best of the rest" behind the drivers of the top three teams.

3. In 2015 Lewis Hamilton became the first British F1 driver to successfully defend the world championship, equalling whose British record for the most championship wins?

From Quiz F1 in 2015 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Jackie Stewart

Lewis Hamilton won his third world championship title in 2015, following his previous wins in 2008 and 2014. Amazingly, despite ten British drivers having won a total of 15 championships between 1958 and 2014, not one of them had managed to successfully defend their title - luckily Hamilton was able to break that unenviable record in 2015. Prior to Hamilton's success, Jackie Stewart was the only British driver to have won three world championships - his wins came in 1969, 1971 and 1973. Graham Hill and Jim Clark won two F1 world championships each during the 1960s. Nigel Mansell only took the title once - in 1992.

4. Which former world champion had the best possible start to his 2013 campaign when he won the first race of the season in Australia?

From Quiz F1 in 2013 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Kimi Raikkonen

The 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen took the first win of the season which was his second victory since his return to F1 from rallying in 2012. Over the course of the season he failed to take any further victories but finished second a total of six times, earning himself 5th place in the driver's championship - despite not competing in the final two races of the season due to surgery on a longstanding back injury. Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were the three other former world champions who competed in F1 in 2013. They finished the Australian Grand Prix in 2nd, 5th and 9th places respectively.

5. The season started in March with the Australian Grand Prix. Who won the first race of the season?

From Quiz The 2013 Formula 1 Season

Answer: Kimi Räikkönen

In qualifying the Red Bulls showed they were fastest from the very start of the season as they qualified both on the front row, followed by Lewis Hamilton, both Ferraris and Nico Rosberg. Räikkönen only qualified seventh but as it turned out his Lotus was much better at handling the tyres during the race. Especially Red Bull and Mercedes were struggling with tyre conservation and Räikkönen laid the foundation for his victory by making one less pit-stop than the other frontrunners. Räikkönen won the Australian Grand Prix with Fernando Alonso coming second and Sebastian Vettel third. It was to be Räikkönen's only victory this season. Lotus was competitive in most races and Räikkönen had a strong first half of the season with ten consecutive point scoring races. In the second half of the season Räikkönen's relationship with the team deteriorated because unpaid wages led him to engage in contractual negotiations with Ferrari. Räikkönen had to withdraw for the last two races because of back surgery. He ended the championship in fifth place. Teammate Romain Grosjean struggled to keep up in the first half of the season but finally came good towards the end of the season when he finished on the podium four times in the last six races. He finished the season in seventh place.

6. After much speculation, on 28 September 2012, it was announced that Lewis Hamilton was to leave the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team at the end of the season. Which team was he to join?

From Quiz Formula 1 2012 #2

Answer: Mercedes

This story was originally broken at the beginning of September by Eddie Jordan, the former team owner, who was working for the BBC at the time; however it took some time for the deal to be made public. The news surprised many as although McLaren had experienced some problems with the car in terms of reliability and in pit stops, it was still a race winning car. By contrast the Mercedes lead driver (Nico Rosberg) finished 97 points behind Hamilton in the driver's championship and Mercedes themselves finished fifth in the constructor's championship.

7. In 2011, there were five drivers on the grid who had won the World Drivers Championship. Who returned to F1 in 2012 to make it six?

From Quiz Formula 1 2012 #1

Answer: Kimi Räikkönen

Michael Schumacher was one of the World Champions who had raced in 2011. His brother Ralf was neither a World Champion nor returned to Formula One. Roman Grosjean returned to Formula One race driver in 2012 after a two year absence; however he was not a former World Champion either.

8. Which driver crashed so heavily in the third part of qualifying at the 2011 Monaco Grand Prix that he was unable to compete in the race?

From Quiz More F1 in 2011

Answer: Sergio Perez

Perez lost control of his Sauber on exiting the tunnel. Unlike Nico Rosberg earlier in the weekend, Perez connected heavily with the barrier around the Nouvelle Chicane. This resulted in the session being red flagged whilst the medical staff removed him from the car and the barrier was repaired.

9. The 2011 formula 1 season got off to a false start due to the cancellation of the Bahrain Grand Prix. Why was it cancelled?

From Quiz The 2011 Formula 1 Season

Answer: Demonstrations and revolts in Bahrain

As in many other Arab countries in the spring of 2011 a series of demonstrations against the regime erupted which lead to violence and instability. The situation was judged to be unsafe to hold an international sporting event and the 2011 Bahrain Grand Prix was cancelled.

10. At the end of the 2010 Formula One season, Vitantonio Liuzzi was released. Which driver took his seat at Force India for the 2011 season?

From Quiz Formula One 2011

Answer: Paul Di Resta

Paul Di Resta was the test driver for Force India in the 2010 and won the German DTM series at the same time. He made his race debut at the 2011 Australian Grand Prix and was succesful in scoring his first point at this race as well.

11. The 2010 Formula One season opened with four drivers on the grid that had previously won the World Drivers Championship. Which team employed two world champions as their race drivers?

From Quiz Formula One 2010

Answer: McLaren

The world champions were: Jenson Button (2009), Lewis Hamilton (2008), Fernando Alonso (2005 & 2006) and Michael Schumacher (1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2004). Lewis and Jenson raced for McLaren, Fernando Alonso joined Ferrari, and Michael Schumacher came out of retirement to race for Mercedes.

12. Five of the six drivers who competed for the top three teams - Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull - won at least one grand prix in 2018. Who was the one who did not?

From Quiz F1 in 2018 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Valtteri Bottas

In his first season with the Mercedes team in 2017, Valtteri Bottas secured his first F1 grand prix victory and took three race wins in total over the course of the year. However, he was not able to replicate this success in 2018 and ended up as the only driver from the top three teams not to stand on the top step of the podium. However, his season was not as bad as the statistics might suggest as he finished second on seven occasions and arguably should have won both the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and the Russian Grand Prix. On the former occasion he suffered a catastrophic puncture while leading the race with just 3 laps to go and in the latter event he was forced to swap positions with his team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who went on to win the race in his stead. Kimi Raikkonen's victory at the 2018 US Grand Prix was his first since he won the Australian Grand Prix for Lotus in 2013 - a full 113 races earlier. In the process he set a new record for the longest gap between race wins in F1 history.

13. Which former world champion was unable to compete in the first race of the season as he was still recovering from a heavy accident he suffered in pre-season testing?

From Quiz F1 in 2015 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso moved from Ferrari to his old team, McLaren, ahead of the 2015 season. Unfortunately he had a major accident during testing at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona and had to be airlifted to hospital. The final diagnosis was concussion and he was forced to miss the first race of the season in Australia due to the potential risk of second-impact syndrome. However, as it turned out he didn't miss that much - his car (with reserve driver Kevin Magnussen at the wheel) broke down on the way to the starting grid. On his return to action Alonso was also forced to deny a whole set of wild rumours that had circulated amongst the media during his absence - most of which suggested that Alonso had suffered retrograde amnesia and been left believing he was just 14 years old... The incorrect options are the other three former world champions who lined up for the 2015 season (excluding Lewis Hamilton who was also the reigning world champion).

14. In the second race of the season, the Malaysian Grand Prix, formula 1 was already embroiled in its first controversy, as the outcome of the race was decided by the so called "multi 21" incident. What does this involve?

From Quiz The 2013 Formula 1 Season

Answer: Sebastian Vettel ignored a team order to stay behind Mark Webber

After the last pit stops Mark Webber was leading Sebastian Vettel when the latter was given a coded "multi 21" message, which meant he had to back off and let Webber in the lead. However, Vettel chose to ignore the team order and overtook Webber anyway, to score his first victory of the season. The battle for third place went on between both Mercedes drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. Mercedes also issued a team order when Rosberg was ordered to stay behind Hamilton. Unlike Vettel Rosberg did obey the team order. So with Vettel winning before Webber after an ignored team order and Hamilton finishing third because of a team order it was sour faces all round during the podium "celebrations" after the Malaysian Grand Prix.

15. From which country is the Lotus-Renault team?

From Quiz 2013 Season Teams: Where From?

Answer: Great Britain

Debuting at the 2012 Australian Grand Prix (not to be confused with the original Lotus team which raced from 1954 to 1994), the team was held in regard as an underdog favorite and can take credit for the return of former F1 champion Kimi Räikkönen to the circuits (he had retired at the end of the 2009 season, driving for the Ferrari team).

16. Celebrations were short-lived after Pastor Maldonado won the Spanish Grand Prix in a Williams. What happened after the race?

From Quiz The 2012 Formula 1 Season

Answer: The team's garage burnt down

Shortly after the race fire broke out in the Williams pit-box. Several people got injured, including four members of team Williams as well as members of Caterham and Force India. The probable cause of the fire was a KERS-unit which sparked a fuel fire. Much of Williams's equipment in the garage, including computer hardware, telemetry and pit equipment, was destroyed in the incident.

17. Who secured his first podium with a third place finish in front of his home fans at the 15th race of the 2012 Formula One season?

From Quiz Formula 1 2012 #2

Answer: Kamui Kobayashi

There were no Russian or Mexican Grands Prix held in the 2012 season to enable Petrov or Perez to race in front of their home fans. The Indian Grand Prix was round 17; however, the sole Indian driver on the grid, Narain Karthikeyan, was driving a very uncompetitive HRT and finished in 21st. Unfortunately, this superb drive by Kobayashi didn't stop him losing his race seat at Sauber at the end of the season.

18. At Sauber, there was a brief driver change for the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix. Which driver was told 10 minutes before the second practice session that he was driving the car?

From Quiz More F1 in 2011

Answer: Pedro De La Rosa

Pedro De La Rosa was a reserve driver for both McLaren and Sauber in the 2011 season. Whilst Sergio Perez competed in the first free practice session, he was still feeling the effects of his Monaco crash and therefore told Sauber he could not race. De La Rosa lost a significant amount of time in the second free practice session as Perez's car was modified and even had to race in his McLaren overalls. Sauber's other reserve driver, Gutierrez, was not at the Canadian Grand Prix.

19. 2011 Australian Grand Prix: four drivers made their F1 debut in this race. Who of the four listed below didn't?

From Quiz The 2011 Formula 1 Season

Answer: Daniel Ricciardo

Di Resta (10th), Maldonado (retired) and Perez (disqualified) all started their first F1 race at the 2011 Australian Grand Prix. The fourth rookie was Jérôme d'Ambrosio (14th). Daniel Ricciardo made his debut later in the season, at the British Grand Prix, when he replaced Narain Karthikeyan in the HRT (Hispania Racing Team). The first race of the season was won by Sebastian Vettel.

20. As if technology changes weren't confusing enough, two teams had nearly the same name. Which 2011 team was a continuation of the 2010 constructor Lotus Racing?

From Quiz Formula One 2011

Answer: Team Lotus

Lotus Racing became Team Lotus, although to add the the confusion, they also changed their engine supplier to Renault. They retained their driver line up of Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen. The Renault team secured Lotus cars as their title sponsor, becoming Lotus Renault GP. At one point, both teams were due to run on a black and gold livery, however, Team Lotus decided to retain the green and gold livery they had used in the 2010 season.

21. Brawn GP was the 2009 constructors champions, however a car manufacturer bought the team before the 2010 season started. Which manufacturer was it?

From Quiz Formula One 2010

Answer: Mercedes

Toyota withdrew from Formula 1 at the end of the 2009 season. Neither Saab nor Volvo have been involved in Formula 1. Mercedes modified their agreement with the McLaren team and, along with Aabar bought a controlling stake in the Brawn GP team. They entered the 2010 season as Mercedes GP with Petronas their title sponsor.

22. For the second season in a row, only one podium place went to a driver who was not competing in either a Mercedes, a Ferrari or a Red Bull. Who was it and at what race did he record this achievement?

From Quiz F1 in 2018 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Sergio Perez, Azerbaijan Grand Prix

It was Sergio Perez who took the only podium finish for a non-Mercedes, Ferrari or Red Bull driver in 2018 when he claimed third place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix for the Force India team. It was his first points-finish of the season and netted him 15 points towards his final season tally of 68 - which was good enough for eighth place in the drivers' championship. However, this wasn't the first time that Perez had stood on the podium in Baku - he also finished third in the inaugural race at the circuit in 2016, when the event was held under the title of the European Grand Prix. Interestingly, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was also the venue for the only podium appearance from a driver outside the top three in 2017 (Williams' Lance Stroll on that occasion), suggesting that the tricky street circuit throws up good opportunities for drivers in the lower teams to shine! Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso) and Romain Grosjean (Haas) secured the only fourth places for teams outside the top three in 2018, while fifth place in the first race in Australia proved to be the best result of both Fernando Alonso and McLaren's season.

23. Which driver took his maiden grand prix victory at the fourth race of the season in Russia?

From Quiz F1 in 2017 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Valtteri Bottas

The retirement of world champion Nico Rosberg after the conclusion of the 2016 F1 season left his Mercedes team with a vacant seat and sent the F1 rumour mill into overdrive over the question of who would replace him. The answer turned out to be Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas, who had previously spent four seasons with the Williams team where his best results had been two second-place finishes in 2014. It took Bottas just four races with his new team to score his maiden grand prix victory in Russia. It was an impressive first win as he grabbed the lead of the race at the first corner and held it right through the race with the exception of the pit stop period. He went on to win a further two races during the course of the season, but his team-mate Lewis Hamilton took a total of nine wins, out-scored Bottas by 363 points to 308 and won the world championship.

24. Max Verstappen set a new record for the youngest driver to win an F1 Grand Prix when he took the chequered flag at which European race?

From Quiz F1 in 2016 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Spanish Grand Prix

Max Verstappen was 18 years and 228 days old when he won the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix and became the first driver to win on his debut with the Red Bull team. The result provided a speedy justification of the controversial decision by Red Bull's senior management to promote Verstappen from their junior team Toro Rosso after just four races of the season. However, he had started the race from fourth place on the grid, one slot behind his teammate Daniel Ricciardo and effectively inherited the victory thanks to the two Mercedes drivers crashing out of the race at the first corner and the poor pit stop strategy Red Bull devised for Ricciardo. The victory meant that Verstappen broke Sebastian Vettel's record for youngest F1 race winner, which had stood since Vettel won the 2008 Italian Grand Prix at the age of 21 years and 73 days. Since the race was also the teenager's first podium finish and the first time he had led a grand prix, he also set new records for the youngest driver to achieve both of those milestones (again breaking Vettel's records in the process).

25. Sebastian Vettel delivered Ferrari's first victory in 35 races, when he won which grand prix in March 2015?

From Quiz F1 in 2015 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Malaysian Grand Prix

Vettel recorded his first victory for Scuderia Ferrari in only his second race with the team, the Malaysian Grand Prix held on 29 March 2015. The win was particularly notable as Ferrari had failed to win a single race the previous year, a fact which prompted their previous star driver, Fernando Alonso, to leave the team in favour of McLaren. Incidentally the race also marked Vettel's 40th grand prix victory and was his first win since the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix. Vettel's achievement was particularly impressive as he managed to beat the all-conquering Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg into second and third place respectively. He also went on to win a further two races in 2015 (in Hungary and Singapore) and was the only non-Mercedes driver to stand on the top step of the podium that year. The incorrect options were Ferrari's three previous victories - the 2013 Spanish and Chinese Grands Prix and the 2012 German Grand Prix, which were all won by Fernando Alonso.

26. Despite the Mercedes domination of F1 in 2014, one driver from another team managed to take his maiden victory in Canada and back it up with two more in Hungary and Belgium. Who was this?

From Quiz F1 in 2014 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Daniel Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo joined Red Bull Racing for 2014 after two seasons driving for their 'B' team, Toro Rosso. He replaced fellow Australian, Mark Webber, who had retired at the end of the previous season. His promotion was clearly well deserved as he out-performed his reigning world champion team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, and was the only non-Mercedes driver to take a victory during the whole year. Ricciardo made his F1 debut at the 2011 British Grand Prix, driving for perennial backmarkers, HRT, before moving to Toro Rosso. He finished third in the drivers' championship in 2014 with a total of eight podium finishes (including the three victories), despite getting off to a bad start when he was disqualified from second place at his home race for breaching the rules regarding the management of fuel flow to the engine. Kevin Magnussen (McLaren), Valtteri Bottas (Williams) and Sergio Perez (Force India) all claimed podium finishes in 2014 but didn't manage to record a maiden victory.

27. Sebastian Vettel's win at the final race in Brazil was his 9th consecutive victory. This equalled the record of which former world champion who achieved the same feat across the 1952 and 1953 seasons?

From Quiz F1 in 2013 - The Highs and The Lows

Answer: Alberto Ascari

Alberto Ascari won nine consecutive races starting with the 1952 Belgian Grand Prix and ending at the same race the next year (excluding the 1953 Indianapolis 500 which was technically an F1 championship race but one which many of the regular F1 drivers did not compete in). His record remained unequalled for 60 years before Vettel's win at the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix. However, his achievements are arguably not comparable with Vettel's given the vast differences between F1 of the 1950s and modern 21st century racing. Vettel's win at the Interlagos circuit in Brazil was also his 13th victory of the season. This equalled Michael Schumacher's record from 2004. However, Schumacher won a greater percentage of the races in the 2004 season as it included only 18 races compared to the 19 contested in 2013. Jack Brabham, Juan Manuel Fangio and Mike Hawthorn were all drivers who won the F1 world championship during the 1950s.

28. Sauber-Ferrari originates from a country where German is an official language. Which country?

From Quiz 2013 Season Teams: Where From?

Answer: Switzerland

Debuting at the now extinct 1993 South African Grand Prix, the team is seen by some as the test tube for future drivers of quality. The three-time world champion Sebastien Vettel once drove for them for example, and in season 2012 they were responsible for the promotion of Mexican driver Sergio Pérez to a classic team like McLaren.

29. The main reason for the erratic results in the beginning of the season (seven different winners in the first seven races) was that the teams found it hard to cope with the new tyres. Who was the sole tyre manufacturer for the 2012 season?

From Quiz The 2012 Formula 1 Season

Answer: Pirelli

Pirelli came back into F1 as the sole tyre manufacturer in 2011, after Bridgestone's withdrawal at the end of the previous season. Before the 2012 season Pirelli announced that their new tyres "would provide more opportunity for passes and help make a better show". (source: Autosport). There are four different compounds for dry races, each indicated with a different colour on the side of the tyre (hard - silver, medium - white, soft - yellow and super-soft - red), and two treaded tyres for wet conditions (intermediate - green and full wet - blue). All drivers are obliged to use two different compounds during a race, except in a wet race.

30. As the FIA were unable to obtain the required fuel sample from Vettel's car after qualifying for the Grand Prix at Abu Dhabi he was relegated to the back of the grid. Where did he finish?

From Quiz Formula 1 2012 #2

Answer: Third

After Vettel was put to the back of the grid, his Red Bull team withdrew his car from Parc Fermé so they could make adjustments to the car. The usual penalty for doing this is the car must start from the pit lane. The change in the car's settings to make it easier for Vettel to overtake, coupled with two safety car periods, enabled him to finish the race on the podium.
