Vitaly Petrov (not Yuri) had raced in the GP2 series in 2009, where he finished second behind Nico Hulkenberg, who had himself secured a F1 drive for 2010 with the Williams team.

Other F1 debutants in 2010 were Karun Chandock and Bruno Senna (Hispania) and Lucas Di Grassi (Virgin).

US F1 were awarded an entry to the 2010 Formula One World Championship, however they were unable to take up their place. Lotus, Virgin Racing and Hispania all successfully started and completed their maiden season in F1.

The scoring system was changed with a view to encouraging drivers to overtake and go for the win as opposed to settling for a place to pick up the points.

Despite starting 24th and last on the grid, Alonso finished the race in sixth place. Not bad on a circuit where overtaking is extremely difficult.

The race was won by Mark Webber in the Red Bull, who celebrated by diving first into the swimming pool on the Red Bull Boat and then into the Mediterranean Sea.

The two McLaren drivers were also very close to colliding with each other later on in the race. It seems that Lewis was told that Jenson would not try to overtake, but Jenson wasn't given this message!

Earlier in the race weekend, Red Bull had been testing a new front wing, which failed on Vettel's car. Team Principal, Christian Horner, therefore decided to remove the new part from Webber's car and put it on Vettel's instead. This led to accusations of favouritism within Red Bull. Vettel picked up a puncture on lap 1 and Webber won the race.

This was probably the controversy of the season. Regulations prohibit team orders that influence the outcome of the race. This was seen to be an order to Felipe Massa (who was leading) to move over and let Fernando Alonso through. An instruction that Massa duly followed, for which Ferrari received the maximum possible fine from the stewards.

The matter was referred to the World Motor Sport Council, who imposed no further sanction.

Answer: Heikki Kovalainen

Kovalainen's Lotus was involved in an incident with Buemi's Toro Rosso. This damaged his fuel system. Shortly before he made it back to the pits, the car caught fire. Deciding not to risk driving a flaming car down the pit lane, he parked on the main straight outside the Williams team. They provided him with the extinguisher to put the fire out before a marshall could attend.

The circuit for the Korean Grand Prix only passed the circuit inspection 12 days before the race was due to commence and there was some concern about how the track would cope.

The weather on race day was terrible, the race started under the safety car, but was stopped three laps later to allow conditions to improve. Once the race had restarted and the safety car withdrawn, it was unfortunate that Webber put his car off-circuit which spun him round into a wall and back across the track into Rosberg.

At the start of the race weekend, Fernando Alonso led the championship with 231 points, Mark Webber was second with 220, Lewis Hamilton third with 210. Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button were on 206 and 189 respectively. As there were two races left and 50 points available, Jenson could still win the championship if his rivals slipped up, however a poor qualifying in Brazil essentially ended his chances of retaining the title.

The weather was changeable for the qualifying hour. Nico Hulkenberg changed to slick dry tyres at just the right time to post the fastest time and claim pole position for the first time in his maiden season. Unfortunately, this was not enough for the Williams F1 team to renew his contract for the 2011 season.

Answer: Sebastian Vettel

Alonso led the championship at the beginning of the race weekend and had an advantage of 8 points over second place man, Webber. An ambitious race strategy by Webber, which Ferrari covered led to both drivers being held up by Petrov in the Renault, enabling Vettel to win the race and leapfrog them both to become the youngest world champion in F1 history.

The podium for the final race had the newly crowned world champion on the top step with the 2008 and 2009 champions in second and third places respectively.

In only their sixth season as a Formula One constructor, Red Bull Racing, powered by a Renault engine won the constructors championship at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The Adrian Newey designed car was easily the car of the season.
