Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 2010 Formula One season opened with four drivers on the grid that had previously won the World Drivers Championship. Which team employed two world champions as their race drivers?

Answer: McLaren

The world champions were: Jenson Button (2009), Lewis Hamilton (2008), Fernando Alonso (2005 & 2006) and Michael Schumacher (1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2004). Lewis and Jenson raced for McLaren, Fernando Alonso joined Ferrari, and Michael Schumacher came out of retirement to race for Mercedes.
2. Brawn GP was the 2009 constructors champions, however a car manufacturer bought the team before the 2010 season started. Which manufacturer was it?

Answer: Mercedes

Toyota withdrew from Formula 1 at the end of the 2009 season. Neither Saab nor Volvo have been involved in Formula 1. Mercedes modified their agreement with the McLaren team and, along with Aabar bought a controlling stake in the Brawn GP team. They entered the 2010 season as Mercedes GP with Petronas their title sponsor.
3. Yuri Petrov drove alongside Robert Kubica in the Renault Team, and by doing so became the first Russian driver in Formula One.

Answer: False

Vitaly Petrov (not Yuri) had raced in the GP2 series in 2009, where he finished second behind Nico Hulkenberg, who had himself secured a F1 drive for 2010 with the Williams team.

Other F1 debutants in 2010 were Karun Chandock and Bruno Senna (Hispania) and Lucas Di Grassi (Virgin).
4. Four teams were granted admission into the 2010 Formula One season, however only three made it on to the grid at the first race in Bahrain. Which team didn't make it?

Answer: US F1

US F1 were awarded an entry to the 2010 Formula One World Championship, however they were unable to take up their place. Lotus, Virgin Racing and Hispania all successfully started and completed their maiden season in F1.
5. The scoring system was changed in 2010. How many points did the winning driver receive for crossing the finish line first?

Answer: 25

The scoring system was changed with a view to encouraging drivers to overtake and go for the win as opposed to settling for a place to pick up the points.
6. Which driver was unable to take part in qualifying for the 2010 Monaco Grand Prix, having damaged his car in an accident during the third free practice session?

Answer: Fernando Alonso

Despite starting 24th and last on the grid, Alonso finished the race in sixth place. Not bad on a circuit where overtaking is extremely difficult.

The race was won by Mark Webber in the Red Bull, who celebrated by diving first into the swimming pool on the Red Bull Boat and then into the Mediterranean Sea.
7. The first rule of racing in Formula One is unofficially 'Don't take out your teammate'. The drivers for which team appeared to forget this when they collided on lap 40 of the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix?

Answer: Red Bull

The two McLaren drivers were also very close to colliding with each other later on in the race. It seems that Lewis was told that Jenson would not try to overtake, but Jenson wasn't given this message!
8. What did the winner of the 2010 British Grand Prix say to his team over the radio at the end of the race?

Answer: "Not bad for a number two driver."

Earlier in the race weekend, Red Bull had been testing a new front wing, which failed on Vettel's car. Team Principal, Christian Horner, therefore decided to remove the new part from Webber's car and put it on Vettel's instead. This led to accusations of favouritism within Red Bull. Vettel picked up a puncture on lap 1 and Webber won the race.
9. Complete the quote from a team radio at the 2010 German Grand Prix. "______ is faster than you. Can you confirm you understood the message?"

Answer: Fernando

This was probably the controversy of the season. Regulations prohibit team orders that influence the outcome of the race. This was seen to be an order to Felipe Massa (who was leading) to move over and let Fernando Alonso through. An instruction that Massa duly followed, for which Ferrari received the maximum possible fine from the stewards.

The matter was referred to the World Motor Sport Council, who imposed no further sanction.
10. At the 2010 Singapore Grand Prix, one driver's car caught fire and the driver put the fire out himself on the pit straight. Which driver?

Answer: Heikki Kovalainen

Kovalainen's Lotus was involved in an incident with Buemi's Toro Rosso. This damaged his fuel system. Shortly before he made it back to the pits, the car caught fire. Deciding not to risk driving a flaming car down the pit lane, he parked on the main straight outside the Williams team. They provided him with the extinguisher to put the fire out before a marshall could attend.
11. At the inaugural Korean Grand Prix, Mark Webber lost control of his car, hit the wall, and rolled back across the circuit. Which driver ran into him, being unable to avoid him due to terrible weather conditions?

Answer: Nico Rosberg

The circuit for the Korean Grand Prix only passed the circuit inspection 12 days before the race was due to commence and there was some concern about how the track would cope.

The weather on race day was terrible, the race started under the safety car, but was stopped three laps later to allow conditions to improve. Once the race had restarted and the safety car withdrawn, it was unfortunate that Webber put his car off-circuit which spun him round into a wall and back across the track into Rosberg.
12. At the start of the 2010 Brazilian Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the season, how many drivers could mathematically still win the drivers championship?

Answer: 5

At the start of the race weekend, Fernando Alonso led the championship with 231 points, Mark Webber was second with 220, Lewis Hamilton third with 210. Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button were on 206 and 189 respectively. As there were two races left and 50 points available, Jenson could still win the championship if his rivals slipped up, however a poor qualifying in Brazil essentially ended his chances of retaining the title.
13. Which driver unexpectedly took pole position for the 2010 Brazilian Grand Prix?

Answer: Nico Hulkenberg

The weather was changeable for the qualifying hour. Nico Hulkenberg changed to slick dry tyres at just the right time to post the fastest time and claim pole position for the first time in his maiden season. Unfortunately, this was not enough for the Williams F1 team to renew his contract for the 2011 season.
14. After 19 Grands Prix, which driver won the final race in Abu Dhabi to clinch the 2010 World Drivers Championship?

Answer: Sebastian Vettel

Alonso led the championship at the beginning of the race weekend and had an advantage of 8 points over second place man, Webber. An ambitious race strategy by Webber, which Ferrari covered led to both drivers being held up by Petrov in the Renault, enabling Vettel to win the race and leapfrog them both to become the youngest world champion in F1 history.

The podium for the final race had the newly crowned world champion on the top step with the 2008 and 2009 champions in second and third places respectively.
15. Which team scored the most points in the 2010 Formula One constructors championship to win the title?

Answer: Red Bull

In only their sixth season as a Formula One constructor, Red Bull Racing, powered by a Renault engine won the constructors championship at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The Adrian Newey designed car was easily the car of the season.
