From Quiz
The 2014 MLB Season

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks opened the season with two games in Sydney, Australia, with the Dodgers winning both games. The four prior seasons were opened in Japan, and one each in Mexico and Puerto Rico, as MLB seeked to broaden its appeal to a worldwide audience.

2. Which division had the teams with the three best records in all of MLB during the 2015 season?

From Quiz The 2015 MLB Season

Answer: NL Central

The St, Louis Cardinals won 100 games, the Pittsburgh Pirates 98, and the Chicago Cubs 97. No other team won more than 95. ("NL" will stand for National league, and "AL" for American League.)

3. Who did the Oakland Athletics acquire from the Arizona Diamondbacks?

From Quiz 2012-13 Offseason

Answer: Chris Young

In this three team deal Oakland received OF Chris Young (ARI); Arizona received SS Cliff Pennington (ARI) and RP Heath Bell (MIA); Miami receives 3B Yordy Cabrera (OAK).

4. Which Philadelphia Phillies pitcher bagged the NL 2010 Cy Young Award?

From Quiz Major League Baseball Awards: 2010

Answer: Roy Halladay

Halladay played for 12 season with the Toronto Blue Jays from 1998-2009. He came to the Phillies in 2010 to go 21-10 with an ERA of 2.44. He would help the Phillies to the playoffs, but would lose to the Giants four games to two in the NLCS. This was Roy's second Cy Young Award, winning his first in 2003 with the Blue Jays.

5. How many teams won 100 games in the regular season?

From Quiz Major League Season Review: 2010

Answer: 0

The Yankees were the only team in 2009 to win 100 games when they finished the season with 103. The Philadelphia Phillies took the bragging rights in 2010 to have the best record in Major League Baseball with their 97-65 season. They improved by only four wins over the 2009 season, 92-70 in 2008, and a 89-73 record in 2007. Those Phillie records were all good enough to win the National League Eastern Division in every season.

6. Which American League team had the best record in the Majors at the All-Star break?

From Quiz At the All-Star Break 2010

Answer: Yankees

In another seemingly well-balanced season, only two teams had a record over .600. They Yankees led baseball with their 56-32 record, a .636 win percentage. The Yankees also had the best home record of 28-13. The Rays were the other team with a .614 average. The other teams listed were in the cellar of their respective division.

7. This Atlanta Braves first baseman tied for first in the National League with 44 doubles. He was first in the NL in times on base and second in RBI'S. Who was 9th with 269 points?

From Quiz MLB Top 10 Hitters of 2019

Answer: Freddie Freeman

Ronald Acuna Jr. was 11th with 258 points. Ozzie Albies was 22nd with 215 points. Josh Donaldson was 38th with 182 points.

8. MLB instituted a major rules change for 2014 when it adopted an instant replay system. Under this system, how many challenges can a manager make in a game?

From Quiz The 2014 MLB Season

Answer: two, if the first challenge is successful

If the first challenge is successful, then a manager is permitted a second challenge in that game. This is slightly different than the NFL challenge system, in which teams are permitted two challenges automatically, and a third if the first two are successful. In both sports, game officials are permitted to institute reviews late in the game, at their discretion.

9. Which manager managed his first postseason game in 2015 at the age of 66?

From Quiz The 2015 MLB Postseason

Answer: Terry Collins of the Mets

Terry Collins - one of those "feel good" stories that make being a baseball fan so much fun. He was drafted in 1971 by the Pirates, and played for ten years in the minors without ever appearing in a major league game. His MLB managing career started in 1994 with the Astros for three years, followed by three years with the Angels, a stint in the Japanese leagues, and then in 2011 he became the manager of the Mets. In 2015 his Mets unexpectedly won the NL East over the heavily-favored Nationals, propelling them into the 2015 postseason.

10. Which team qualified for the postseason for the first time in 22 years when it won the AL East?

From Quiz The 2015 MLB Season

Answer: Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays had the longest playoff drought of any MLB team going into the 2015 season. Oddly, though, the Jays had won the World Series more recently than seven of the other nine playoff teams, the only exceptions being the Cardinals and the Yankees. The Jays won both the 1992 and 1993 World Series, then vanished from the playoffs until the 2015 season. Their division, the AL East, was a tough division in which to compete during this period, with the Yankees and/or the Red Sox usually dominating the division. Of the other teams in the postseason in 2015, the Mets, Dodgers and Royals last won a World Series in the 1980s, the Pirates in the 1970s, the Cubs in 1908(!), and the Astros and Rangers never.

11. What team acquired SS Jose Reyes, RHP Josh Johnson, LHP Mark Buehrle, INF Emilio Bonifacio and C John Buck from the Miami Marlins?

13. Which pitcher started Game 1 for Tampa Bay?

From Quiz 2010 ALDS: Rays vs Rangers

Answer: David Price

David Price started Games 1 and 5, as did Cliff Lee for Texas. Price gave up five runs in 6-2/3 innings in Game 1 and three runs in six innings in Game 5. 14. Only one slugger in the season hit more than 50 home runs. Who was this American Leaguer?

From Quiz Major League Season Review: 2010

Answer: Jose Bautista

After the 2008 and 2009 seasons were played without a player hitting 50 big ones, Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays had a tremendous season by hitting 54. He also batted .260 along with 148 hits and 124 RBIs. Jose was in his seventh season in the big leagues, and 2010 was the first time that he ever hit 20 home runs in a season. Albert Pujols of the Cardinals was the runner-up for the Major Leagues, and took the National League home run crown with 42. Albert was in his 10th season with the Cardinals, and hit 30+ home runs in every single season.

15. If the season had ended at the break, who would have just missed out batting for the Triple Crown?

17. Which team won its division by the widest margin, when it won the AL Central by twelve games?

From Quiz The 2015 MLB Season

Answer: Kansas City Royals

The Royals snuck into the playoffs in 2014 as a wild card team, but in 2015 they avoided having to play a wild card game by winning the division outright in dominating fashion. The Detroit Tigers, by contrast, sunk to last place in 2015, after having won the division the prior four years.

18. Who did the Washington Nationals acquire from the Minnesota Twins?

From Quiz 2012-13 Offseason

Answer: Denard Span

The Washington Nationals sent prospect SP Alex Meyer to the Twins in this deal.

19. Who won the 2010 Manager of the Year Award in the American League?

From Quiz Major League Baseball Awards: 2010

20. What was the final score of Game 1?

From Quiz 2010 ALDS: Rays vs Rangers

Answer: 5-1, Rangers

Games 1 and 5 were won by the Rangers 5-1. Game 3 was won by Tampa Bay 6-3 in Arlington, and Game 2 was won by Texas by the score of 6-0. No game went 5-1 Tampa Bay, but Game 4 was 5-2, Tampa Bay.

21. Which slugger in 2010 hit his 600th career home run, then his 610th in September to pass Sammy Sosa on the all-time home run list?

From Quiz Major League Season Review: 2010

Answer: Alex Rodriguez

The others had not hit even 500 career home runs by 2010. Sosa retired in 2007 with 609 home runs. Sammy played in 18 seasons. A-Rod of the Yankees was in his 17th season in 2010. In early August, number 600 for Rodriguez came courtesy of Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Shaun Marcum. A-Rod became the seventh player in history to reach the 600-plateau. Later, his 610th home run moved him into the number 6 spot for career home runs at the time, ahead of Sosa. Rodriguez closed out the 2010 season with 613, behind Ken Griffey Jr with 630.

22. By the time the season reached the All-Star break, four teams had dumped their manager and hired a new one. In the AL it was Baltimore and Kansas City. In the National League it was the Marlins and which other team?

From Quiz At the All-Star Break 2010

Answer: Diamondbacks

Arizona got rid of A.J. Hinch and hired Kirk Gibson 10 days prior to the break. It was Gibson's first managerial appearance. The Marlins gave Fredi Gonzalez his walking papers and hired Edwin Rodriguez prior to the break. Baltimore replaced David Trembley with Juan Samuel, and the Royals' Trey Hillman gave way to Ned Yost.

From Quiz The 2010 Season

Answer: Ubaldo Jimenez

Jimenez threw a no-hitter against the Atlanta Braves on April 17th, the first no-hitter in the history of the Rockies, and through 12 starts had an ERA of 0.78. Jimenez went on to have a sparkling 15-1 win-loss record at the All-Star break, becoming the first pitcher with 15 wins at the break since David Wells in 2000. Jimenez' lifetime stats prior to 2010 showed a 31-28 win-loss tally, and an ERA of 3.80. To say that Jimenez had a breakout year in 2010 would be a gross understatement.

24. This Kansas City Royal DH/OF finished 21st in the American League MVP voting. He led the AL with 48 home runs and 178 strikeouts. Who was 7th with 286 points?

From Quiz MLB Top 10 Hitters of 2019

Answer: Jorge Soler

Whit Merrifield was 18th with 227 points. Alex Gordon was 100th with 138 points. George Brett is retired.

25. MLB instituted a rules change for 2014, designed to prevent injuries from which event?

From Quiz The 2014 MLB Season

Answer: collisions at home plate

Prior to 2014, catchers were permitted to block the plate, even if the throw into home had not arrived yet, and runners were permitted to crash into the catcher, in lieu of sliding. This sometimes resulted in serious injuries, such as Giants' catcher Buster Posey's season-ending injury in 2011. MLB finally corrected this problem prior to the 2014 season, bringing its rules in line with those already in use in amateur baseball. The catcher cannot block the plate unless he has the ball, and the runner cannot leave the baseline to initiate a collision with the catcher. It should be noted that the written rule has always stated that a fielder cannot block a runner's base path unless he has the ball or is making a play on a ball. However, the umpires had developed an unwritten "common law" rule to allow this in the case of catchers at home plate.

26. Which team began the 2015 season with the highest payroll in baseball?

From Quiz The 2015 MLB Season

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers stocked up on high-priced free agents, and did win their division. However, they got knocked out of the playoffs in the Division Series by the surprising Mets. The Dodgers actually ended the year with a higher payroll due to some expensive midseason acquisitions. It was hard to see any significant correlation between payroll and performance for the 2015 season. For example, of the four teams which were still around for the two League Championship Series, two were in the top half of payroll and two in the bottom half. The wrong choices are the three teams at the bottom of the list of opening day payrolls.

27. What RP did the Atlanta Braves receive from the LA Angels of Anaheim?

From Quiz 2012-13 Offseason

Answer: Jordan Walden

The Angels would receive SP Tommy Hanson in this deal.

28. In a close and controversial American League Cy Young balloting, who was declared the winner of the award?

From Quiz Major League Baseball Awards: 2010

Answer: Felix Hernandez

Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners bagged his first Cy Young Award. He had a 13-12 record in 2010. Second place went to David Price of the Rays who went 19-6, then C.C. Sabathia who threw a 21-7 record for the Yankees. Fourth place went to Jon Lester of the Red Sox by going 19-9.

29. What was Michael Young's first hit of the series?

From Quiz 2010 ALDS: Rays vs Rangers

Answer: home run

In the fifth inning of Game 2, Michael Young had been 0-4 in the series to that point. On a 2-2 pitch, Young checked his swing according to the first base umpire Jerry Meals. The very next pitch, Young belts a 3-run home run into center field. The Rays' manager Joe Maddon came out to argue and was tossed by the home plate umpire.

30. Which National League team ended the season with the wildcard playoff berth?

From Quiz Major League Season Review: 2010

Answer: Atlanta Braves

The Braves tied for the third best record in the National League in 2010 with their 91-71 record. The division winners were the Phillies (NL East 97-65), Giants (NL West 92-70), and the Reds (NL Central 91-71).
