NCAA Football by Season Trivia Questions

1. In the waning seconds of a September 6, 2014 game, the Nebraska Cornhuskers were tied 24-24 with the McNeese State Cowboys (an FCS team) at home, until what big play?

From Quiz
2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part III)

Answer: Ameer Abdullah broke five tackles and went into the end zone

With 32 seconds left, Ameer Abdullah caught a short pass from QB Tommy Armstrong and broke five tackles on the way to a 58-yard touchdown. I recommend looking the play up online. Nebraska ended up winning 31-24. Nebraska came into the game with a #19 ranking in the AP poll, but dropped out of the top 25 after the narrow win. They would get a #24 ranking, however, after they beat the Fresno State Bulldogs 55-19 the next week. Abdullah was disappointed that the game was so close.

2. The Arizona State Sun Devils at the USC Trojans game on October 4, 2014 featured a Hail Mary pass to win the game for Arizona State. What Arizona State quarterback connected with Jaelen Strong as time expired, to get the win for the Sun Devils?

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: Best Games

Answer: Mike Bercovici

Mike Bercovici was the backup quarterback. Taylor Kelly, the normal starter, was hurt. Bercovici played like a starter against USC and threw for 510 yards, including the concluding "Jael Mary", which occurred after some USC fans had left. The Sun Devils celebrated their 38-34 win, their first one on USC's home turf since 1999.

3. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team lost five of their last six games, but they did manage to beat most of their rivals. Which of their rivals did Notre Dame NOT beat in 2014? Hint: Coloseum.

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part II)

Answer: USC Trojans

Notre Dame lost 49-14 at USC on November 29, 2014 in both teams' last regular season game. USC quarterback Cody Kessler passed for 372 yards and 6 touchdowns against the Fighting Irish. It extended Notre Dame's 3-game losing streak to 4, a streak that began at Arizona State on November 8, 2014, when the Sun Devils beat the Irish 55-31. However, Notre Dame beat Michigan 31-0 at home in South Bend on September 6, 2014. They beat Purdue 30-14 at Lucas Oil Stadium on September 13, 2014. They beat Navy 49-39 on November 1, 2014.

4. What was the score of the Michigan vs. Ohio State 100th football game?

From Quiz Michigan/Ohio State - 100th Game

Answer: Michigan 35-21

Michigan won the game 35-21, after letting a 21-0 lead dwindle to only a touchdown lead at 28-21.

5. How many teams were there in the SEC west prior to its expansion in 2012?

From Quiz SEC College Football

Answer: six

Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Miss State. Texas A&M joined in 2012 to make it seven.

6. Who was the only Heisman winner of the 90's to not play in the NFL?

From Quiz College Football of the 1990s

Answer: Charlie Ward

Ward went on to play for the New York Knicks in the NBA.

7. On November 15, 2014, the #4 TCU Horned Frogs were nearly upset by what team, that only ended up winning one Big 12 game? (Hint: More of a basketball school.)

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part III)

Answer: Kansas Jayhawks

The final score of the game was 34-30. After TCU scored first, the Jayhawks promptly answered in an unusual drive. After a punt, TCU was flagged for roughing the punter which gave the Jayhawks a new set of downs. Then, on a field goal try, the holder bobbled the snap but found a receiver to convert a first down. Then, on third down, Jayhawks receiver Nick Harwell caught a deflected pass for a first down. Kansas running back Corey Avery eventually scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. The extra point was blocked, however. The whole game can be found online. The Horned Frogs went on to beat the Ole Miss Rebels 42-3 in the Peach Bowl on December 31, 2014. The Jayhawks were a very senior-led team in 2014, and really wanted to win. They were playing under interim head coach Clint Bowen, the linebackers coach who was named interim head coach after Charlie Weis was fired after a 2-2 start that included a 0-23 loss to the Texas Longhorns. They finished the season 3-9.

8. After seven games, the Ole Miss Rebels were fresh off a 34-3 win over the Tennessee Volunteers, and were ranked #3 in the AP poll. In their 8th game, what team handed the Rebels their first loss of the season? Hint: Bayou.

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part II)

Answer: LSU Tigers

It was a very low-scoring game, which LSU won 10-7 at home. In the waning moments of the game, Ole Miss could have tied it up with a field goal, but a delay of game penalty made the field goal a 47-yard one instead of a 42-yard one. With 9 seconds left, Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace was told to try to get a few yards to make the field goal easier or, if there was no one open, to throw the ball out of bounds. He attempted to find a receiver in the end zone, but LSU safety Ronald Martin picked him off. Ole Miss was handed their first loss of the season, which was the beginning of a 3-game SEC losing streak for the Rebels. They went on to lose to the Auburn Tigers 31-35 at home and at the Arkansas Razorbacks 0-30.

9. What unranked Southeastern Conference team shut out two straight ranked opponents during the 2014 college football season, but still did not get ranked in the AP poll? Hint: Hogs.

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part I)

Answer: Arkansas Razorbacks

On November 15, 2014, Arkansas shut out the #20 LSU Tigers 17-0 at home in Fayetteville. It was their first conference victory since October 13, 2012, when they beat the Kentucky Wildcats. They followed it up next week with a 30-0 victory over the #8 Ole Miss Rebels, also in Fayetteville. This brought the Razorbacks to 6-5, which explains why they weren't ranked. They had too many losses to be ranked. However, Arkansas only lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide by 1 point when they played on October 11. Many considered them to be better than their record.

10. It's November 22, 2014, and my team, the Oklahoma Sooners, is playing the Kansas Jayhawks at home in Norman. I think I'll rush for 427 yards, in the rain. Who am I?

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: Name Me

Answer: Samaje Perine

The game was played in the rain, and was delayed from its 11 AM start (US central time) to a 12:30 PM start time due to lightning in the area. The game was a 44-7 win for the Sooners over the unranked Jayhawks (who only won 3 games all year). Did I mention Perine was a true freshman in 2014? Ezekiel Elliott was a running back for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Cameron Artis-Payne was a running back for the Auburn Tigers.

11. Who was the quarterback for Michigan on their first touchdown of the 100th game?

From Quiz Michigan/Ohio State - 100th Game

Answer: Steve Breaston

Navarre lined up at quarterback, but Michigan shifted and Breaston received the snap and ran it in.

12. Which team is nicknamed the "Gators"?

From Quiz SEC College Football

Answer: Florida

The Florida Gators are in the SEC east.

13. How many Heisman winners of the 90s were not offensive backs?

From Quiz College Football of the 1990s

Answer: 2

WR Desmond Howard and CB Charles Woodson both won the awards.

14. Who was an All-American linebacker on the 1995 Northwestern Wildcats football team that upset Notre Dame, and the head coach of the 2014 Northwestern Wildcats football team that also upset Notre Dame?

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part III)

Answer: Pat Fitzgerald

The 1995 season was one of the best football seasons in Northwestern history. On September 2, 1995, the Wildcats traveled to South Bend to face the #9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and won 17-15. The Irish were favored by 28 points. After a 28-30 loss two weeks later to Miami (OH), the Wildcats won their next nine games, climbed to #3 in the AP poll, and eventually went to the Rose Bowl on January 1, 1996. They lost to the USC Trojans 32-41. On November 15, 2014, the Wildcats (who were riding a 4-game losing streak) traveled to South Bend to face the Irish. It was the first meeting between the programs since the 1995 upset. Both teams had multiple miscues. A Notre Dame extra point attempt was blocked and returned by the Wildcats for two points. A fumble in the waning minutes gave the Wildcats a chance to go down and tie the game up (which they did). A questionable hold in overtime contributed to a missed field goal, which meant when Northwestern got the ball, any score would win. When they did get the ball, the Wildcats' kicker drilled a 41-yarder for the win. An interesting factoid, Pat Fitzgerald says "Go Cats!" in every interview he does.

15. Who did the Ole Miss Rebels play on October 4th, 2014 that gave them their best win of the season, according to the AP poll, leading to a storming of the field afterwards?

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: Best Games

Answer: Alabama Crimson Tide

With the score tied 17-17, Ole Miss scored a go-ahead touchdown, but missed the extra point. Alabama could not score, however, and Ole Miss won 23-17. Ole Miss was fined $50,000 for the field storming (not allowed in the Southeastern Conference) but Ole Miss fans donated on a website set up to pay it off, and paid it off in four hours.

16. The Oklahoma Sooners were ranked #4 in the 2014 preseason rankings. They won their first four games. What team beat them in week 5? Hint: Amon G. Carter Stadium.

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part II)

Answer: TCU Horned Frogs

TCU was ranked #25 in the AP poll coming into the game in contrast to Oklahoma's #4 ranking. TCU beat the Sooners 37-33 at home in Fort Worth, and went on to finish the regular season 11-1. The Sooners rebounded to beat the rival Texas Longhorns 31-26 next week, but went on to close the regular season 3-3. In the postseason, the Sooners lost the Russell Athletic bowl on December 29, 2014, 6-40 to the Clemson Tigers and finished the season unranked in the AP poll.

17. Who won the Pacific-12 Conference South division during the 2014 college football season? Hint: Northwestern and Kentucky share their nickname.

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part I)

Answer: Arizona Wildcats

Coming into the November 28, 2014 matchup with the Arizona State Sun Devils, Arizona was not in a position to win the division. The UCLA Bruins, Arizona, and Arizona State each had two conference losses, but UCLA had beaten both Arizona teams. If UCLA could beat the Stanford Cardinal at home in the Rose Bowl, they would clinch the division. However, Stanford beat UCLA 31-10, and the rivalry game between the Wildcats and the Sun Devils functioned as the Pac-12 South Championship game, as UCLA had three conference losses. Arizona won 42-35, clinching the division. Arizona beat some good teams on their way to the division title, such as the Utah Utes and the Oregon Ducks.

18. Which team's mascot is named "Uga"?

From Quiz SEC College Football

Answer: Georgia

Short for "University of Georgia".

19. When was the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) system begun in College Football?

From Quiz College Football of the 1990s

Answer: 1998

Tennessee became the first champions under the new system.

20. What Clemson Tigers quarterback got hurt during the November 15, 2014 game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, which may have contributed to his team's 6-28 loss?

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part III)

Answer: Deshaun Watson

In the first quarter, the Tigers were deep in the red zone and Deshaun Watson converted a first down with a 7-yard run. While making a cut, however, he injured his knee and did not return to the game. The backup QB, Cole Stoudt, threw three interceptions in the game before being benched for third-stringer Nick Schuessler. Two of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns. Clemson did not score a touchdown in the game, and their six points came off of two field goals.

21. The Oregon Ducks suffered their only loss of the regular season on October 2, 2014. What unranked team came into Autzen Stadium and defeated them?

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: Best Games

Answer: Arizona Wildcats

The fourth quarter featured Arizona driving downfield with the game tied 24-24. Anu Solomon, the Arizona QB, was sacked on third down, but Tony Washington was given an excessive celebration penalty, giving Arizona a first down. The Wildcats drove down the field to score a touchdown and won 31-24. However, Oregon beat them 51-13 in the Pac-12 championship game on December 5, 2014, to win the Pac-12 Conference title.

22. On September 20, 2014, what Big 10 college football team, whose last bowl game coming into the season was the 2007 Insight Bowl, traveled to Faurot Field and upset the Missouri Tigers? Hint: Old Oaken Bucket.

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part I)

Answer: Indiana Hoosiers

Missouri was ranked #18 in the AP poll when Indiana beat them 31-27. The game is widely regarded as a fluke, as Indiana went on to compile a 4-8 record. Their only Big 10 win was against the Purdue Boilermakers, a 3-9 team. On the other hand, Missouri went on to win the Southeastern Conference East division and compile an 11-3 record. It was Indiana's first win over a ranked opponent since October 14, 2006 when they beat the #15 Iowa Hawkeyes at home in Bloomington.

23. What was the attendance of the Michigan vs. Ohio State 100th game?

From Quiz Michigan/Ohio State - 100th Game

Answer: 112,118

It was a record for attendance at a college football game.

24. Which team's stadium is nicknamed "Death Valley"?

From Quiz SEC College Football

Answer: LSU

Home of the Fighting Tigers.

25. How many times was the National Championship shared in the 1990s?

From Quiz College Football of the 1990s

Answer: 3

Colorado and Georgia Tech in 1990, Washington and Miami in '91, and Nebraska and Michigan shared the title in 1997.

26. On January 1, 2015, the Michigan State Spartans faced off with the Baylor Bears in the Cotton Bowl. With less than 1:15 remaining, Baylor was up 41-35 and attempted a field goal. What Baylor kicker attempted the field goal?

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: Best Games

Answer: Chris Callahan

It was 44-yard field goal that would have put Baylor up by 9. Marcus Rush blocked it, and RJ Williamson grabbed it and returned it into Baylor territory. Michigan State took a one-point lead after scoring a touchdown and executing the extra point. Baylor had one more chance, but Bryce Petty got sacked twice then intercepted with 2 seconds left. Michigan State won 42-41.

27. The 2014 Marshall Thundering Herd football team won every game they played, except one. They lost by 1 point to _____. Hint: The state this team is from borders West Virginia.

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part II)

Answer: Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

It is worth mentioning that Marshall did not play a single Power 5 opponent in 2014, and their non-conference schedule featured an FCS team (Rhode Island), Miami (OH), Ohio, and Akron. Those teams won 14 games in 2014. In short, Marshall was supposed to win every game. The game against Western Kentucky took place on Marshall's home turf on November 28, 2014. Western Kentucky won 67-66 on a two-point conversion in overtime. The two quarterbacks combined to throw 15 touchdown passes, an FBS single-game record, and 6 interceptions. Marshall went on to win the Conference USA Championship and beat the Northern Illinois Huskies 52-23 in the Boca Raton bowl.

28. Whose team colors are Orange & White?

From Quiz SEC College Football

Answer: Tennessee

The Vols, the Tennessee Volunteers.

29. The 2014 Sun Bowl featured a pair of teams who had never met before. They both had the word "Devils" in their nicknames. What are the two teams?

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part III)

Answer: Arizona State and Duke

On December 27, 2014 the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Duke Blue Devils played each other in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. The Sun Devils playing in the Sun Bowl seems strangely appropriate. Arizona State was favored by 7.5 points. With 5:03 left, Duke threw a touchdown pass (the extra point was good) to go up 31-30. It was their first lead of the game. However, on the ensuing kickoff, Kalen Ballage returned the ball 96 yards, setting his team up on the 4-yard line. After a touchdown pass and a failed 2-point conversion, the Sun Devils were up 36-31, which was the final score of the game. If the Blue Devils had won, they would have won 10 games for consecutive seasons. That would have been a first in the history of the Duke football program.

30. The 2014 SMU Mustangs football team's only win of the season came on their last game. What team did they beat? Hint: Storrs.

From Quiz 2014 College Football Season: In Review (Part II)

Answer: Connecticut Huskies

On December 6, 2014, the SMU Mustangs traveled to Rentschler Stadium to play the Connecticut Huskies. SMU won 27-20 in their sole regular season victory, and avoided being the only 2014 FBS team to finish the regular season without a win. It was a rough season for SMU, they scored less than 10 points in 7 of their 12 games.
