Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Arizona State Sun Devils at the USC Trojans game on October 4, 2014 featured a Hail Mary pass to win the game for Arizona State. What Arizona State quarterback connected with Jaelen Strong as time expired, to get the win for the Sun Devils?

Answer: Mike Bercovici

Mike Bercovici was the backup quarterback. Taylor Kelly, the normal starter, was hurt. Bercovici played like a starter against USC and threw for 510 yards, including the concluding "Jael Mary", which occurred after some USC fans had left. The Sun Devils celebrated their 38-34 win, their first one on USC's home turf since 1999.
2. The Florida State Seminoles played the Clemson Tigers at home on September 20, 2014. Which of these statements about the game is not true?

Answer: Florida State won it on a field goal in overtime

Sean Maguire started the game at quarterback in place of Jameis Winston. The game went into overtime with the score tied 17-17. On 4th and 1 in overtime, Clemson tried to get a first down but got stopped short by Florida State's defense. Florida State got the ball. With a 12-yard touchdown run, the Seminoles scored and won 23-17.
3. Who did the Ole Miss Rebels play on October 4th, 2014 that gave them their best win of the season, according to the AP poll, leading to a storming of the field afterwards?

Answer: Alabama Crimson Tide

With the score tied 17-17, Ole Miss scored a go-ahead touchdown, but missed the extra point. Alabama could not score, however, and Ole Miss won 23-17. Ole Miss was fined $50,000 for the field storming (not allowed in the Southeastern Conference) but Ole Miss fans donated on a website set up to pay it off, and paid it off in four hours.
4. The Oregon Ducks suffered their only loss of the regular season on October 2, 2014. What unranked team came into Autzen Stadium and defeated them?

Answer: Arizona Wildcats

The fourth quarter featured Arizona driving downfield with the game tied 24-24. Anu Solomon, the Arizona QB, was sacked on third down, but Tony Washington was given an excessive celebration penalty, giving Arizona a first down. The Wildcats drove down the field to score a touchdown and won 31-24.

However, Oregon beat them 51-13 in the Pac-12 championship game on December 5, 2014, to win the Pac-12 Conference title.
5. On January 1, 2015, the Michigan State Spartans faced off with the Baylor Bears in the Cotton Bowl. With less than 1:15 remaining, Baylor was up 41-35 and attempted a field goal. What Baylor kicker attempted the field goal?

Answer: Chris Callahan

It was 44-yard field goal that would have put Baylor up by 9. Marcus Rush blocked it, and RJ Williamson grabbed it and returned it into Baylor territory. Michigan State took a one-point lead after scoring a touchdown and executing the extra point. Baylor had one more chance, but Bryce Petty got sacked twice then intercepted with 2 seconds left. Michigan State won 42-41.
6. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Georgia Bulldogs game on November 29, 2014 gave us an eventful fourth quarter and overtime. Which of these DID NOT happen in the fourth quarter/overtime?

Answer: Georgia intercepted Justin Thomas' pass in OT to get the win

Georgia Tech had lost their last five games to Georgia, and were looking to knock off the #9 ranked Bulldogs. After Justin Thomas fumbled the ball, Georgia drove down the field, and a field goal would not help them. With less than 30 seconds left, Georgia quarterback Hutson Mason threw a touchdown pass to Malcolm Mitchell on fourth-and-goal. Georgia was up 24-21 after the extra point.

After the kickoff, Georgia Tech got into field goal position, and Harrison Butker hit a career-long 53-yard field goal to force overtime. Georgia Tech scored first, but missed the extra point. On Georgia's possession, DJ White picked off Hutson Mason to seal the 30-24 win.
7. The Penn State Nittany Lions played the University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights in Dublin, Ireland to open the season on August 30, 2014. Penn State's final play won them the game. What was Penn State's final play?

Answer: Field goal

In the waning minutes of the game, Penn State was down 23-24. They marched down the field to set up the field goal. It was a 36-yard field goal, and was kicked by Sam Ficken as the clock hit zero. Penn State won 26-24. The game was James Franklin's debut as the head coach of the Nittany Lions.
8. On October 13, 2014 the Kentucky Wildcats played at the Florida Gators. What was the controversial 4th down play that allowed Florida to send the game into double overtime?

Answer: Florida snapped the ball after it appeared the play clock had expired and threw a touchdown pass

The Florida QB, Jeff Driskel, threw a touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson on 4th down. Florida kicked the extra point. The Kentucky coach, Mark Stoops, was not happy. He thought the play clock ran out. Florida won 36-30 after three overtimes. Florida was an 18-point favorite.
9. October 18, 2014 featured the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the Florida State Seminoles. With less than 20 seconds left, Florida State led 31-27. Notre Dame tried to score on 4th down from Florida State's 2-yard line. What happened during the play?

Answer: Notre Dame scored but was called for offensive pass interference

Both teams were undefeated coming into the game. Everett Golson connected with Corey Robinson for the 2-yard score. However, one of Notre Dame's receivers threw a run block into one of Florida State's defenders, and Corey Robinson did not catch the ball prior to crossing the line of scrimmage. That's offensive pass interference. Notre Dame was moved back 15 yards, but could not get in the end zone. Florida State got the win.
10. September 20, 2014 featured the California Golden Bears at the Arizona Wildcats. With 4 seconds left, who did Arizona QB Anu Solomon connect with on a hail mary to win it?

Answer: Austin Hill

Arizona was down 28-6 at the half. Anu Solomon connected with Austin Hill after time expired to get the 49-45 win. The play came to be known as the "Hill Mary." Arizona never led until after the clock struck zero.
