At the 27th Prefontaine Classic in Eugene Oregon, on Sunday, May 27, 2001, Alan Webb (South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia) ran 3:53:43, the second fastest mile ever by an American, and broke the High School Mile record of 3:55.3 set by Jim Ryan in 1965. He also broke Ryan's 1500 meter record of 3:39.0 with a 3:38:26 along the way. He went to Michigan in the followingyear on a full scholarship.
