The club was formed in 1883 as The Black Arabs, after the shirts they wore and a local rugby club. A year later they renamed as Eastville Rovers, and in 1897 became Bristol Eastville Rovers. One year later, they dropped Eastville from the club name and were known as Bristol Rovers.

They were stuck in Division Three (South) South until the 1952-53 season, when they were champions and were promoted to Division Two. Two seasons before that saw the Gas reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Alfred Homer was the first ever manager of Bristol Rovers where he took charge of the club for 21 years from 1899 to 1920. Ben Hall was the second manager but only lasted from 1920-1921. Andy Wilson, the manager after Ben Hall, lasted 5 years from 1921-26. Albert Prince-Cox was actually the 6th manager of Bristol Rovers. He took charge of them in 1930 and lasted with the club for 6 years before Percy Smith took over.

They reached the quarter-finals of the F.A. Cup. They drew 0-0 at Newcastle United and then they had a replay. Rovers had home advantage but couldn't take advantage of it as they lost 1-3. Newcastle United went on to win the F.A. Cup in 1951, defeating Blackpool by 2-0.

In 1933, when Huddie was in a Louisiana cell, Folk song expert Dr John A. Lomax and his son came to record prison songs and they met Huddie. In 1933 the first ever recording of "Irene" was recorded("Irene" was later renamed to "Goodnight Irene"). This song is now the offical song of Bristol Rovers and is used mainly in the Blackthorn End at the Memorial Stadium. There are many other songs sung by the Rovers fans but this is the main one.
