1. Which of these players, with 260 goals, set the record for being Bristol Rovers's all-time top scorer?

Answer: Geoff Bradford

Geoff Bradford set the record with 242 League goals to his name from 461 games. He scored a further 18 goals in 50 cup games. He led Rovers to the Third Division South Championship in 1952-53. He was very successful as he also had 1 England cup to his name.

Ray Warren played an amazing 450 League games for the Pirates scoring 28 League goals, and an extra FA Cup goal in 32 games. He was also part of the team that won the 1952-53 Third Division Championship.


Alfie Biggs, was a player who wasn't in the 1952-53 side but was an excellent Bristolian. He played a total of 463 games for the club and scored 197 goals. 178 of his goals were in the League. He played for Preston North End before the Pirates where he got 22 goals in 39 games. He left Bristol Rovers for Walsall in the 1967-68 season and played 24 games, scoring 9 goals. His final stop in his career was at Swansea Town where he played 16 games and scored 4 goals.

Harold Jarman was one of few players to play over 500 games in all competitions for the Pirates. He scored 143 goals in his stay. He also played for Newport County in the 1973-74 season with 40 apperances and 8 goals. He went abroad to the New York Cosmos but didn't play a single game for them.
2. When did Bristol Rovers first enter the Football League?

Answer: 1920

They were stuck in Division Three (South) South until the 1952-53 season, when they were champions and were promoted to Division Two. Two seasons before that saw the Gas reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.
3. Who was the second manager of Bristol Rovers?

Answer: Ben Hall

Alfred Homer was the first ever manager of Bristol Rovers where he took charge of the club for 21 years from 1899 to 1920. Ben Hall was the second manager but only lasted from 1920-1921. Andy Wilson, the manager after Ben Hall, lasted 5 years from 1921-26. Albert Prince-Cox was actually the 6th manager of Bristol Rovers.

He took charge of them in 1930 and lasted with the club for 6 years before Percy Smith took over.
4. In which year did the Pirates change their name to Bristol Rovers?

Answer: 1898

They were formed as the Black Arabs in 1883. A year later, their name was changed to Eastville Rovers. It wasn't until 1897 when they changed their name to Bristol Eastville Rovers and a year later they changed their name to Bristol Rovers, which is what it has stayed ever since.
5. In which of these two (successive) seasons did Bristol Rovers reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup?

Answer: 1971 and 1972

A 1-1 encounter against Aston Villa at home meant that a replay had to be played to break the tie. Aston Villa won 1-0 and went on to reach the final where they lost 2-0 to Spurs. Bristol City however made one round further than the Gas as they lost to the winners of the cup, Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 on aggregate.

The year after Bristol Rovers lost on home soil 4-2 to the winners of the League Cup, Stoke City. Bristol City had a rather forgetful League Cup run after losing to the hands of Plymouth Argyle in the 1st Round.
6. In which of these years did Bristol Rovers win the Watney Cup (it existed for 4 years)?

Answer: 1972

This competition was introduced in 1970 as an invitation competition; it was never very popular and was abandoned in 1973, lasting a mere 4 years. Rovers won the cup in 1972 after a comfortable 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. The semi-finals saw them defeat Burnley and then a closely fought battle in the final where they drew 0-0 but won 4-3 on penalties against Sheffield United.
7. In 1951, something special happen to Rovers which was a record. What was it?

Answer: They achieved their best F.A. Cup run

They reached the quarter-finals of the F.A. Cup. They drew 0-0 at Newcastle United and then they had a replay. Rovers had home advantage but couldn't take advantage of it as they lost 1-3. Newcastle United went on to win the F.A. Cup in 1951, defeating Blackpool by 2-0.
8. Which of these players earned the most caps for their country while at Bristol Rovers?

Answer: Neil Slatter

Neil Slatter finished with 22 Wales caps, 10 of which he won for Rovers and won the other 12 from Oxford. Brain Godfrey won a total of 3 Wales caps but all were as a player at Preston North End. Gary Mabbutt won a total of 13 England caps, but all while playing for Tottenham Hotspur. Dai Ward won two Wales caps, one while he was at Cardiff City and one for the Gas.
9. Who originally sung the song "Goodnight Irene"?

Answer: Huddie Ledbetter

In 1933, when Huddie was in a Louisiana cell, Folk song expert Dr John A. Lomax and his son came to record prison songs and they met Huddie. In 1933 the first ever recording of "Irene" was recorded("Irene" was later renamed to "Goodnight Irene"). This song is now the offical song of Bristol Rovers and is used mainly in the Blackthorn End at the Memorial Stadium.

There are many other songs sung by the Rovers fans but this is the main one.
10. In which year did Bristol Rovers move to the Memorial Stadium?

Answer: 1996

They moved to the Memorial Ground in 1996, and 2 years later they named it the Memorial Stadium and Rovers became the owners of this stadium. They drew 1-1 against Plymouth Argyle in their first match at this stadium.
