From Quiz
World Series Losing Teams

Answer: Texas Rangers

The Cardinals finished with a record of 90-72 and earned the NL Wild Card on the last day of the season. They beat the Phillies in 5 games then the Brewers in 6 to advance to meet the AL West champion Texas Rangers. The Rangers finished 96-66 and beat the Rays in 4 games then the Tigers in 6 to advance to their second consecutive World Series. They also lost to the Giants in 2010.

2. The first World Series skunk job of four games to none was provided by which National League team in the 1910s?

From Quiz Whew! Is That a Skunk?

Answer: Boston Braves

The other teams did not exist in the 1910s. The Braves met the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1914 series, and put them down four games to none. The Athletics went 99-53 in the season, but couldn't come up with a win against the Braves. Two of the four losses were one-run games. The Braves were led by Johnny Evers who batted .438, and Hank Gowdy who hit .545 in the series. Both Bill James and Dick Rudolph won two games each for the Braves.

3. In 1966, the Dodgers were favored to win their third World Series in four seasons. Frank Robinson had other ideas, and his team skunked the Dodgers in four games. Which team was this that won their first-ever World Series?

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, it was only fitting that a New York team reached the World Series. However, the Diamondbacks (92-70) stole the show on a bottom of the 9th single by Luis Gonzalez to give the D-Backs their first championship over the Yankees (95-65). Also, the Seattle Mariners tied a Major League record for team wins in a season with 116 (1906 Cubs). They lost to the Yankees in the AL Championship Series.

8. The New York Yankees dominated baseball in the 20th Century by going to an amazing 36 World Series. How many times did they win by skunking a team four games to none?

From Quiz Whew! Is That a Skunk?

Answer: 7

Their first victim was the Pirates in the 1927 series, via 'Murderers Row'. Those that followed were the Cubs in 1932 and 1938, the Reds in 1939, Phillies in 1950, in 1998 against the Padres, and the Braves in 1999. The Yankees themselves were skunked by their opponent only twice in the entire century. The Dodgers blanked them in 1963, and the Reds took care of them in 1976.

The Dodgers and Giants were the only NL teams listed. The Giants came to play, and with Willie Mays, Hank Thompson, Johnny Antonelli, and Ruben Gomez, they held the Indians to only nine runs in the entire series.
