Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1966, the Dodgers were favored to win their third World Series in four seasons. Frank Robinson had other ideas, and his team skunked the Dodgers in four games. Which team was this that won their first-ever World Series?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

The 1966 Orioles had one of the biggest guns in the season. Frank Robinson hit for a Triple Crown, won the MVP, and was the 1966 series MVP. Each Oriole starter in the series won a game each.
2. In 1954, the Cleveland Indians set an American League record for winning 111 games. They were a hands-down favorite to win the World Series. Instead, they were skunked four games to none by which team?

Answer: Giants

The Dodgers and Giants were the only NL teams listed. The Giants came to play, and with Willie Mays, Hank Thompson, Johnny Antonelli, and Ruben Gomez, they held the Indians to only nine runs in the entire series. Of those, the Indians hit two three-run home runs from the bats of Hank Majeski and Vic Wertz. The Giants scored 21 runs of their own.
3. The 2004 Boston Red Sox ended their 86-year World Series drought, and did it in style by defeating which team four games to none?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

Except for game one, the Red Sox put the Cardinals down by at least three runs in each victory. Larry Walker hit St. Louis' only home runs, while Bellhorn, Damon, Ortiz, and Ramirez all hit one each for Boston. Of course with Manny being Manny, he was the series MVP.
4. This team won the "Earthquake Series" of 1989 by skunking the San Francisco Giants in four games. Unfortunately, they themselves would be skunked in 1990 by the Cincinnati Reds. Who was this team that flip-flopped?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

The Athletics outscored the Giants 32-14 in the 1989 series, and pitcher Dave Stewart took the series MVP under the helm of Tony LaRussa. Although the Athletics won four more games than the Reds in the 1990 season going 103-59, the Reds gave them a taste of their own medicine, outscoring Oakland 22-8, including a game one 7-0 shutout.
5. The first true World Series skunking of four games to none was provided by the Boston Braves. They went up against a team that led the Major Leagues in wins, had Eddie Collins and Frank Baker's bats, along with the arms of Joe Bush and Eddie Plank. Who was this losing team?

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

The Tigers were the only other American League team listed. 1914 pitted the 94-59 Braves against the 99-53 Athletics. Eddie Collins had won the season MVP, but had only three hits with a .214 average in the series.
6. To lose a World Series is bad enough, but to lose it in three consecutive seasons is tough to rebound from. Which team was the first in history to lose three consecutive World Series?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

The Tigers didn't step up when the time came, even with Ty Cobb, Sam Crawford, Hughie Jennings, Ed Killian, and Bill Donovan on the roster. They lost two to the Cubs in 1907 and 1908, then three-peated against the Pirates in 1909. The National League was not without their own embarrassments.

The New York Giants was the first in their league to lose three consecutive, shortly after the Tigers from 1911-1913.
7. This was the first player in history to win the World Series MVP, and his team was the loser. The player was Bobby Richardson. Which team was his?

Answer: New York Yankees

The 1960 World Series ended with the first walk-off home run to end a series. In game seven, second baseman Bill Mazeroski provided the historical shot for the Pirates that would win the game, 10-9, and win their first series since 1925. Richardson, also a second baseman, had 11 hits with 12 RBIs, and batted .367 in the series.
8. In which year were the Yankees skunked four games to none in a World Series for the first time?

Answer: 1963

The 1922 Yankees lost to the Giants 4-0-1 in the only World Series that had a tie. Their four games to none series loss was against Sandy Koufax and the underdog Dodgers in 1963. The Yankees with their typical all-star cast, couldn't match up to Koufax, Drysdale, Podres, and Perranoski from the mound. Koufax was the series MVP, and saw the Yankees score only four total runs in the series. Two of those runs were home runs hit by Mickey Mantle and Tom Tresh.

The 1976 Reds also skunked the Yankees.
9. After almost 100 seasons of their franchise existence, the Philadelphia Phillies won their first World Series in 1980 with the help of third baseman Mike Schmidt. Who did they defeat?

Answer: Kansas City Royals

In the Phillies' first World Series appearance, they lost to the Boston Red Sox in 1915 while winning only one game. In 1950, they were skunked by the Yankees. 1980 would be different as they put the Royals down four games to two. Schmidt hit two home runs and batted .381 to receive the series MVP. Pitcher Steve Carlton also won two games for Philadelphia.
10. Which team lost four World Series in the 1990s?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

The Braves went to an amazing five World Series in the 1990s, but could only win one in 1995 against the Indians. They lost to the Twins in 1991, the Blue Jays in 1992, and to the Yankees in 1996 and 1999. Manager Bobby Cox was at the helm during the entire decade.
