Australian Survivor Trivia Questions

1. "Australian Survivor" often has a subtitle in its name indicating the type of teams that are competing. What were the two groups called in 2024?

From Quiz
"Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 1-3

Answer: Titans vs Rebels

"Australian Survivor" is based on the American reality show "Survivor", which, at the time this season of "Australian Survivor" aired, had televised 45 seasons. The Australian version has some major differences: It is usually longer around 47 days compared with 26 for the parent show. The number of contestants is usually 24 not 18 and the number of episodes per season is greater, usually 24 episodes shown three times per week. This was the fourth season set in Samoa, eclipsing the three seasons shot in Fiji The Australian show's cinematography is always superb, showing the beauty of the setting. "Australian Survivor" is fond of these apparently dichotomous subtitles though from the description offered by host Jonathan LaPaglia in the introductory episode there appeared to be some overlap in this season's choices - The tribes had been chosen based on outlook to life - The Titans were a group of young people who had been successful in their life, leaders in fact, whereas the rebels had been known to have led, well a rebellious life ("rule breakers, mavericks, thrill seekers"). The show began with the Titans hanging off a battered Cargo boat looking toward their new island home when three dinghies with the rebels drew level. It looked like a scene from a watery "Mad Max - Fury Road". The hype, tension, and rivalry had begun. (Author's note. This is the 11th season of "Australian Survivor". However, the 10 Network insists on calling it the ninth season. This was because the first two seasons were shown on rival networks and the 10 Network does not recognise these two seasons. To prevent ambiguity, this author will refer to this season as "Australian Survivor" 2024).

2. Who caught Feras after the 'treasure box' was opened'?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 4-6

Answer: Alex

Feras led Garrick and Raymond, both of whom he trusted, straight to the locked box. After unlocking it, the box contained an idol and a key to the other tribe's box. Feras slipped the idol to Garrick just as Alex, arrived suspicious of the activity. Feras confessed to finding the key but not the idol and offered to turn his pockets out as he did not have an idol (which was technically correct). Alex was not convinced. Sarah and Kelli arrived, with Kelli going back to the tribe to announce they had found something. Feras told the tribe about the key. Several Rebels peered at him suspiciously, so he offered to empty his bag and pockets. But Tobias said there was no need, as he added that they are finally united, and they don't need to be "un-united" now. (If you are a long-term fan, "Survivor" producers are quick to include words that come back to bite you later. This was one of those moments.) Later, Alex interrogated Feras asking what else had he found in the box. Feras stuck to his story and did not tell Alex about his idol. Alex was not convinced. Feras now had a target on his back.

3. Aileen, quiet until this episode, announced herself as a strategic player by announcing what?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 4-6

Answer: A plan to vote out Alex

Aileen devised a plan to eliminate the other major player in the "Cuddle Club" which, then, was down to three players: Sarah Tobias and Alex. The plan involved all eight of the remaining Rebel Tribe, the so-called Oddballs (More of a loose affiliation, not a formal alliance). The plan was to put four girl's votes on Alex (herself, Kelli, Kirby, and Rianna) and the four guys' votes on Tobias (Feras, Garrick, Raymond, and Scott). With this plan, there would need to be a re-vote as it will be a 4-4 tie (with the three Cuddle Club votes irrelevant). As per "Survivor" rules, Alex and Tobias will not vote on the re-vote so the Oddballs are to vote the same as the first round, which will force Sarah to choose which one of the two Cuddle Club men goes home. Sarah would choose Tobias, her sleep partner, over Alex. Simple plan: Girls vote Alex twice, and Boys vote Tobias twice. Very clever plan.

4. One of the delights of any 'Survivor" is the individual interviews with the contestants (by an unseen, unheard, interviewer) Feras had a unique way of describing camp life. According to Feris, what was a 'sandwich'?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 1-3

Answer: Two people cuddling at night when sleeping

All "Survivor" franchises feature frequent interviews by unseen interviewers with contestants. Those with big personalities seem to be chosen first. So Day Two began with Feras (Rebel tribe) who described himself as not a "big, dumb Arab" but he demonstrated in this interview he was a 'player' With a smile as wide as the screen and as bright as the Rebels' fire, Feras bemoaned that it is not the lack of food that was the main issue but the discomfort of not being able to sleep. By necessity, the tribemates have to sleep closely together in a team-made shelter. However, Feras was non-plussed by how closely some people slept. He made hilarious observations that Sarah and Tobias "had a little sandwich", while Alex and Peta "had a very naughty sandwich", a "comfortable" sandwich. According to Feras, a first-day sandwich should be an "innocent sandwich". With this interview, Feras endeared himself to the audience and his ability to 'read' other tribe mates signalled him as a serious player.

5. The Rebels lost the fourth immunity challenge but had a plan to blindside a prominent player. The plan almost worked. Only one tribe member dissented from the agreed plan. Who was this?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 4-6

Answer: Kelli

The Immunity challenge was a "Survivor" variant on dodgeball which the Rebels lost sending them to their second tribal council. But they had Aileen's plan... Still, the Rebels needed to go into pre-TC scramble mode, except Tobias who squatted down by the fire and said, "Everyone go and have their chats, I'm making a fire, then dinner." He said he wasn't worried because everyone liked him. Alex and Sarah worked on Kirby and Rhianna counting on their votes to vote out Feras. At Tribal Council, Feras was worried they would swing so after the votes were cast Feras took off his shirt revealing his idol from the treasure box. That negated Alex, Tobias, and Sarah's votes but there were only three votes for Feras. Kirby and Rhianna did not swing - they voted according to Aileen's plan. Aileen's plan almost worked. She and Kirby had worked on Kelli to ensure that she stuck to the plan ("A is for Alex, B is for Blindside"). However, it needed all eight people to follow the plan: Girls on Alex, and boys on Tobias. Kelli reasoned she could work with Alex but she did not know Tobias well at all so she voted for Tobias. So there were five not four votes for Tobias, only three for Alex, and three for Feras which did not count. Tobias went home. Alex stayed. Kelli had wrecked the plan. Also, the problem, for Kelli, was that Alex did not like her and refused to work with her regardless. Kelli was part of an eight-person plan which she single-handedly thwarted meaning that now seven tribemates were mad at her. Sarah became upset when she realised Kelli had sent Tobias home and Alex did not want to work with her. Kelli's alliance partners were now numbered zero. Four Tribal Councils so far, four blindsides. That has to be a record.

6. After the first immunity challenge, Frankie and Nathan with Jaden, arguably the strongest three on the Titan Tribe, conspired to take out Jess, who they believed was a 'nothing'. Who got voted out?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 1-3

Answer: Frankie

Frankie, Jaden and Nathan were the 'muscle' of the Titans' tribe. Because Jess put Frankie's name to Nathan as a person to oust, Nathan went straight back to Frankie and she and Nathan decided that Jess should be the one to go as, according to Nathan Jess was "on the scrap heap", and a "nothing". Frankie and Nathan then did the rounds telling the others how to vote. When Nathan offered to 'carry' Kitty and Caroline, they did well not to roll their eyes at him but they were clearly not impressed by this 'generous' gesture. Having told everybody how to vote, and their job done, they went for a swim with their sidekick Jaden. Most of the rest of the tribe were not impressed with being told what to do. So they scrambled. At Tribal Council the 'Power Trio' were very comfortable with where they believed they sat in the tribe hierarchy and indeed the first four of the first five votes read out were for Jess. However, the next seven votes were for Frankie. She was blindsided, much to the shock of Nathan and Jaden. (The only person outside the power trio who voted for Jess was Winna). Frankie and Nathan broke the cardinal rule of "Survivor" - You do not take away other tribe mates' autonomy, in Australia especially, where autonomy to make your own decisions is not only respected, it is expected. Eden the cinema manager, appeared to be quick with movie quotes: When he voted, he talked to the camera about Frankie, "You're an absolute terminator, but tonight it's hasta la vista, baby." Indeed.

7. Who or what is the "Invisible Hand"?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 1-3

Answer: Eden and Mark manipulating outcomes behind the scenes

It was Jess who mentioned Frankie's name first as the person to be voted at the first tribal council but it was Mark and Eden who did all the work to make it happen. Nevertheless, Mark and Eden were all in favour of Jess taking the credit as it took the heat off them. It was Eden who came up with the term "Invisible hand". The "hand" also had a role in the second ousting as well.

8. As the resulting Tribal Council, it is clear that Kirby and Feras are gunning for each other. Who is eliminated?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 4-6

Answer: No-one

It took a non-elimination to stop the fifth blindside vote in a row. JLP announced a non-elimination TC (by now, a tradition in "Australian Survivor") where the tribe would vote for one member to go over to the Titans tribe to sabotage their next immunity challenge. The deal was that if the 'saboteur' successfully sent the Titans to the next Tribal Council, they would rejoin the Rebels. If they failed, the saboteur will stay on the Titans. The anticipated showdown between Kirby and Freas was put on ice, Kirby had a new problem: Feras wanted to go over to the other tribe but everyone knew he had a key to their treasure box. She whispered furiously to tribe mates saying Feras could not go. Kelli was the obvious choice. She could sabotage the Titans' immunity challenge just by participating plus tribe mates would get a couple of days reprieve from her constant chatter. Kelli was not keen on going but the vote was unanimous. She was dispatched to the Titans' camp with instructions to keep them up all night.

9. The second reward challenge was a tug-of-war with a difference. What was *NOT* one of the prizes won?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 1-3

Answer: Pizza and burgers

The tug-of-war challenge had a crate as the centrepiece. Each round featured an unseen prize for the tribe that won that particular round. There were four rounds with the prizes being a tarpaulin, fishing gear, and bananas - all won by the Titans. The Rebels' sole win was chocolate biscuits with marshmallows. The Titans won 3-1. Cue Eden with the (appropriate) movie quote: "Are you not entertained?" from "Gladiator" (2000). Back at Camp, Winna, chomping on a banana found something hard in his piece of fruit - it was a scroll telling him where he could find an immunity idol. Winna played it cool, woke up the next morning first, and realised he had an idol to find so went and retrieved it without much effort.

10. Does the intelligence from the Rebels tribe, via Kelli, help the Titans tribe to find a hidden box?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 4-6

Answer: Yes, Mark found it and eventually smashed it open

The previous episode was Rebels-heavy. Not much was shown of the Titans. Mark found the treasure box and shared this information with the two Vs. However, they couldn't open the locked box so they re-buried it. Very telling was that Mark did not share this information with his original alliance - The Middle-Aged Mafia (Mark, Kitty, Caroline and Eden). It is dangerous ground when a tribe member tries to manage two alliances by keeping them apart. When Kelli started telling the Titans about Rebel secrets, Mark goes back to the box and smashes it open revealing an immunity idol. He shared the news with Valeria and Viola.

11. The second immunity challenge was an old favourite. What was involved?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 1-3

Answer: Tossing coconuts into another team's basket until they could no longer keep it suspended

Another physical challenge. Tribemates had to traverse an obstacle course then had to work as a team to get dozens of coconuts down an overhead chute and then toss them into the other team's basket which was held aloft by two tribemates. The Rebels came from behind and won sending the Titans back to Tribal Council. The Invisible Hand plotted for Jess to put out a name so that they could conspire to oust her. They did not know that Nathan had put Eden's name forward as Nathan suspected Eden was behind Frankie's dismissal. Jess, eager to be accepted by Nathan, takes Eden's name back to the others. Mark then scurries around the others to flip the vote onto Jess. When Eden found out he scrambled with the others to make sure he wasn't going to be voted out by getting the others to split the vote to protect him (in case an idol was played). At the Tribal Council, Eden revealed that he was being targeted which cued Nathan to find out more about his mate Frankie's blindside, questioning Jess. In what is seen as poor "Survivor" play, Jess reveals it was she who brought up Frankie's name (Yes, she did but that was all she did but took credit for Frankie being voted out) but then she revealed to Eden that it was her who put his name out there before Tribal Council. When it was time to vote, Eden got one vote (from Jess). The other ten votes went 6-4 to Jess over Nathan. Mark and Eden's plan worked according to their script. Another blindside plus enough votes for Nathan to reduce his confidence. Two Tribal Councils, two blindsides.

12. With Kelli being banished to the Titans' tribe did she sabotage their next immunity challenge as expected?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 4-6

Answer: No, she volunteered to sit out the challenge

When Kelli arrived at the Titans' camp, she passed on valuable information and exaggerated her role in the Rebel tribe but sought very little information in return. Her story did not add up and the Titans saw through her. Eden correctly deduced she was a spy. Meanwhile on the Rebels' tribe... They enjoyed the quietness of a Kelli-free camp, especially Alex. They easily won the reward challenge. (The Titans had not won one at that point!) They enjoyed toasted cheese sandwiches (how Australian is that?) and coffee as well as photos from home which they shared. Feras slipped away with Raymond and he found another idol. He told Alex knowing Alex would broadcast the news around the tribe which he did. Back to the crucial immunity challenge and incredibly Kelli volunteered to sit out the challenge thereby eliminating any chance of sabotaging it. The Rebels were shocked at this betrayal. (Author's note. It is possible that Kelli knew she would not last much longer on the Rebels' tribe so she could have a fresh start on the Titans' tribe if the Titans won immunity. We never did find out her reasons for sitting out.) However, with irony, the Rebels won immunity without any input from Kelli. Titans were sent to Tribal Council.

13. For the first seven days, the Rebels had worked together as a cohesive unit but cracks appeared when there was talk of annoying tribe members and wishing they were gone. How was this addressed?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 1-3

Answer: A plan was hatched to throw an immunity challenge to get to Tribal Council to vote one of them off

The Cuddle Club was Alex, Peta, Sarah, and Tobias (Rebels) because of their close sleeping arrangements. They believed they were part of the majority and believed most of the tribe was part of their alliance. They were annoyed with Kelli because of her exuberant personality, and also annoyed with Raymond because he was caught looking for an immunity idol (!) and he had an immature persona. These four key members talked about throwing a challenge to enable them to go to Tribal Council to vote one of them off. Peta became more confident she and her alliance (smaller than she thought - most of the rest of the tribe were unaligned at that stage) were controlling the game. This became more apparent when Peta found an idol without really trying near the well. Before the immunity challenge, the Titans won the reward challenge which was a watery wrestling match between opposing tribemates. The reward was a selection of canned food which was disappointing for the Titans but they were pragmatic enough to eat the food anyway. At the immunity challenge, which involved dragging a heavy sled around to be able to pick up puzzle pieces, it was clear that some of the Rebels were not trying but not everyone was in on the plan (which says something about the size of the so-called majority alliance) and those that did not know exerted themselves to maximum capacity. In the end, the Titans who led by a long margin for most of the challenge, nearly shot themselves in the foot as the Rebels' two puzzle solvers did not know about throwing the challenge and nearly caught up. The Cuddle Club had their desired result - They were going to Tribal Council to vote an 'unwanted' member off their tribe. (Cue the ominous music.)

14. In episode 6, we saw a new issue arise that caused a Titan to be eliminated which was?

From Quiz "Australian Survivor" 2024: Episodes 4-6

Answer: Unequal food sharing arangements

The Titans had not won a reward challenge so all they had to eat was rice and beans supplemented with coconut. Caroline was concerned they were consuming the rice and beans too fast and they would run out. She was especially concerned that Nathan was taking more than his fair share to the point that he must go for the good of the rest of the tribe. Nathan had some awareness he was on the nose with the tribe. He was perhaps the only Titan who welcomed Kelli as he believed she would be voted out before him. Nathan had impressive physical strength and some social skills but he was also aware that he had no strategic game. At Tribal, JLP explained Kelli's transfer to the Titans and then sent Kelli back to the Rebels before Tribal progressed any further. Caroline had engineered a plan to split the votes between Nathan and Jaden in case Nathan had an idol. Of some concern was that Jaden (whose game appears to be - go along with the majority as long as it wasn't him - The Sandra Twine strategy perhaps?) showed no concern when he was told to vote out his closest ally Nathan. He did himself no favours at TC when he declared he had forgotten who to vote for. Wina had a similar reaction though his relationship with Nathan was not as strong. Mark threw a spanner in the works by mentioning Caroline's name thereby admitting his alliance with the Middle-Aged Mafia was tenuous at best and he demonstrated his alliance with the two Vs was more important. Caroline's plan held fast with a 6-3-1 vote between Nathan, Jaden, and Caroline. Nathan was the fifth person voted off "Australian Survivor" and the first not to be blind-sided.
