Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a post-COVID-restricted world, the original "Survivor" series seasons were cut from the traditional 39 days to 26. How long was the 2023 version of "Australian Survivor"?

Answer: 47 days

Because of the interruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, "Survivor" cut its normal 39-day season to 26 days so it could shoot both seasons in a calendar year back to back. While this had the advantage of the latter shoot meaning the contestants had not seen the new features introduced in the season shot immediately before it, the concept of "outlast" was weakened when the game duration was cut by a third.

Conversely, when Network 10 earned the rights to create "Australian Survivor" (Season 3 [2016] onwards), they increased the duration of the shoot to a maximum of 55 days. In fact, this season, Season 10, along with Season 9, at 47 days was the shortest since the format started in 2016. The first five seasons were either 50 or 55 days. This allowed extra gameplay between the contestants which were also greater in number (always 24) than the parent show. This meant that there was a greater period before the merge and as such original team loyalty was heightened.
This also meant that the season could be run at 2-3 episodes per week so the viewing season was very similar to the shooting schedule - 'Real-Time' "Australian Survivor".

2. The 2023 version was stylised as "Australian Survivor Heroes vs Villains" featuring both new and returning players. How where the players assigned to each team?

Answer: New contestants chose which team they wanted. Returning players were assigned according to their previous gameplay

The 24 players included 11 players from previous seasons. Some of these were 'celebrity' contestants like Flick Palmateer, a professional surfer, local TV star, Sharni Vinson and AFL footballers Shaun Hampson and David Zaharakis and previous winner Hayley Leake. Previous players were assigned to the Heroes or Villains team based on their previous gameplay in prior seasons.

The 13 new contestants were assigned to the tribe based on how they saw themselves playing the game. Interestingly, Sarah Marschke, former Miss World Australia and Elizaveta "Liz" Parnov, Olympic pole vaulter, both arguably, Australian heroes, chose to be on the Villains tribe.

The photo shows two depictions of heroes and villains: A "recidivist" is a villain who offends again (eg returns to crime). The Heroes reference "We could be heroes, just for TWO days is a play on the chorus line from David Bowie's hit "Heroes", indicating becoming a hero again.
3. In Season 9 "Blood V Water", one of the contestants was a child of a "Survivor" winner. This person played very well but had to leave the game because of injury. They returned this season as a celebrity in their own right. Who were the respective Australian and American contestants respectively?

Answer: Nina and Sandra

Nina came into Season 9 "Blood V Water" with her mother Sandra who was the first two-time winner of "Survivor". Nina was unknown at the time but proved she was a chip off the old block with some clever strategic play. She outlasted her mother on that season. Sandra was the sixth person voted off whereas Nina had to be medically evacuated because of an ankle injury six days later.

Nina returned a season later, a celebrity in her own right as a member of the Heroes tribe. She played strategically and lasted long into the game, reached the top five before being eliminated on Day 44, and became the sixth jury member.

The photo is a representation of mother and daughter, made more appropriate when you realise their names are Sandra Diaz-Twine and Nina Twine.
4. The prize money for winning "Australian Survivor" is $500 000, less than half the American total. However, one contestant won $60 000 in cash and another won a new car. Who won the car?

Answer: Simon

In episode 9 there was a food auction. George won a mystery prize which was an afternoon retreat away from camp. George chose Liz and Shonee (the trio who made up the Spice Girls alliance.) to accompany him which included a feast, where Shonee found an immunity idol, and George found out he has won $60 000 from a program sponsor. The three agreed to keep this a secret but George later told Hayley (who used it against him in an effort to get him voted out - it did not work). Hayley and George had an interesting relationship this season. Bitter foes who made the final two, two seasons ago, the two forged a strong friendship after that season. During this season, despite being on opposing teams, the two freely swapped information at tribal challenges. George, one of the most strategic players on "Australian Survivor", made a crucial mistake by trusting his personal friend which nearly cost him his place. Hayley who later confided they were friends outside of the show, had no such misplaced trust. She knew George was a good player and she needed him out of the game.

Simon was not a good strategic player but he was a strong physical player. He won a challenge where you had to make a tower out of wooden blocks using only your feet. it was a difficult challenge but not any more difficult than other challenges. Nevertheless, Simon won this particular challenge (and indeed he did win several other challenges) and he had the option of choosing an Isuzu SUV or pickup truck as his prize. He chose the truck.

5. "Australian Survivor" wouldn't be the same without a tribe swap. However this time most of the villains became heroes and vice versa. What did the new Heroes call themselves?

Answer: Vigilantes

In the first few episodes, the Heroes had several physically strong men such as Shaun, David and Sam. They also had strong social players such as Hayley and Flick to bind tight alliances in the tribe. As such they dominated early challenges resulting in six of the first seven tribe members being voted off. This prompted a tribe swap with most of the strong guys from Heroes and Simon ending up on Villains and several original Villains including George, Shonee and Stevie ending up on Heroes making a mockery of the original tribe names. Nina, once a Hero, now a Villain suggested her new tribe should be renamed the Vigilantes but it was the new Heroes tribe, dominated by Villains, who adopted the moniker. They believed it was fitting given vigilantes are villains that are viewed as heroes.

The tribe swap evoked mixed reactions. Liz felt isolated on Villains without her Spice Girl Alliance partners of George and Shonee; Simon relished that chance of being on a nearly totally different tribe full of jocks, and George relished the opportunity to make new alliance partners, particularly Matt.

The Jacuzzi Alliance was another alliance George formed post-merge with Nina and Liz in a Jacuzzi post-reward challenge. The all-boy George-Matt-Gerry trio was a perceived alliance near the end of the game but it was not formally given its own name.

6. Besides the obligatory tribe swap, there were two instances where individual instances where players changed sides. Who were the two players involved?

Answer: Gerry and Liz

On day 12 the tribes were lopsided as Jackie had been medically evacuated and three villains had been voted out (Anjali, Michael and Mimi) but only one hero (Rogue). However, Heroes lost the next immunity challenge and Gerry (ankle injury), Hayley and Benjamin were in the firing line. However, at Tribal Council Jonathan informed them they will not be voting anyone out but voting to send a member to the other tribe. If they survived two days they would be allowed to re-join the Heroes' tribe. Paige volunteered, promising to return with intelligence on the other tribe, but Sam suggested they needed to send someone the Heroes were willing to lose. Gerry is voted out. This had massive implications. George welcomed Gerry and made him a strong ally, which Gerry repaid later with his loyalty to George post-merge. He survived the next Tribal Council (Sarah was voted out) and was given the option to return to his tribe, Gerry opted to return to the Heroes out of loyalty to the team but he had been hurt by being voted off the Heroes' tribe previously.

On day 25, Liz and Simon, still in the Villains tribe but surrounded by former Heroes, were vulnerable, as they were in the minority and had to go to Tribal Council, On this occasion, the other tribe was allowed to observe. Jonathan announced a twist: He gave one of the Villains a chance to 'mutiny' by writing their own name down to join the Heroes' tribe. If more than one or no names were written down, rocks were to be drawn to see who transferred. When the votes were read, Liz was the only name written down. Liz, mutinied and went to the Heroes' tribe to re-join her alliance partners George and Shonee.

7. The battles continue. On day 45 with five contestants left, a new twist was announced: this time with the jury. What was the twist?

Answer: The tribe voted off a jury member

Day 45, four tribe members left and George, Matt and Gerry were in a tight alliance. Liz was on the outer. Matt won the reward challenge which was an extra tribal council vote. At tribal council, the twist was announced. George wanted Simon off the jury as he knew Simon would never vote for him to be the sole survivor. However, Gerry wanted Shonee off, as he believed all the female jury members would vote for Liz. Matt agreed. Between the two of them, they had three votes. George capitulated (one of the few times he did) and Shonee, with four votes, was dismissed from the jury.

8. The final challenge on "Australian Survivor" has always been brutal and this was no exception. The challenge consisted of balancing on a narrow perch while holding onto a bar overhead which must have one hand on it at all times. However, there was an added twist. What was it?

Answer: Spikes were extended incrementally near their bodies forcing the contestants to avoid increasingly uncomfortable positions to avoid them

After the previous two seasons being affected by COVID-19 restrictions, this season loved ones had been invited to join them to cheer them on in this challenge. The periodic pushing of the spikes was relentless. Both Matt and Liz managed to hang on long enough for the spikes to be extended to their fullest extent of 32 cm forcing them to adopt uncomfortable positions. Waves crashed over them periodically. Liz won immunity over Matt. She believed she would have gone home at the following tribal council if she had not won. After a brief moment with their loved ones, they were sent back to camp to strategize for the final vote-off.

9. At the tribal council after the final immunity challenge, George made an a comment that it took 94 days for something to happen on "Australian Survivor". What was it?

Answer: His torch was snuffed

In "Australian Survivor Brains vs Brawn" George made it all the way to the end before losing to Hayley 7-2 for the title. In both seasons, George was the ultimate strategist, forming alliances and connections that would favour his game. He formed the Spice Girls alliance with Liz and Shonee, the Jacuzzi alliance with Liz and Nina, and the Vigilantes majority where after the tribe swap where he demanded loyalty from the more recent 'acquisitions', Gerry and Matt, to form his final alliance whom he wanted to take to the end (because he knew the jury would be able to see he was the best player of the three). However, even though he formed alliances, he had no trouble betraying members of his alliance if it furthered his game. He betrayed both Shonee and Hayley, his friend outside of the game.

However, Liz foiled his plans when she won the final two immunity challenges. forcing the male alliance to turn on each other. Matt and Gerry recognised they would not win if they sat with George at the end, and voted with Liz to oust George. After 48 days on his first run and 46 days in this game, George finally had his torch snuffed after 94 days.

10. Who was the winner of "Australian Survivor Heroes v Villains"?

Answer: Liz

Liz was the unanimous vote for this season of "Australian Survivor". At the final tribal council, Matt was criticised for lack of an independent strategy and Gerry was criticised for lack of social interaction. Both were criticised for lack of proactivity that did not include George's influence. Liz on the other hand, was able to demonstrate social and physical prowess by winning challenges, she was able to show how she and Shonee used George as a shield and how she was able to seek revenge on George for betraying her friend Shonee (She whispered to George when he was voted out "I finally got you").

Liz won the jury vote unanimously, the $500 000 prize money and the title of Sole Survivor.
