Hercules: The Legendary Journeys Trivia Questions

1. Early in season 3 Salmoneus decides to open a wax museum featuring the horrors of the world, many of which Hercules has battled. One of the exhibits wasn't a mere waxwork and came to life. What classic monster battled Hercules?

From Quiz
"Hercules the Legendary Journeys" Season 3

Answer: Mummy

The episode entitled "Mummy Dearest" was one of the first to stray outside the typical Greek themes of the show. Some of the creatures from the Hercules/Xena universe on display included the Minotaur, Proteus, Bacchus, Echinda, Orpheus and the Cyclops.

2. In the first episode of season two, one of the most dashing and beloved re-occurring guest stars made his debut. His first actions lead to Ioalus being placed on trial for his life. What is the name of this rogue?

From Quiz "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" Season 2

Answer: Autolycus

Autolycus was the self titled King of Thieves. He was rare in that he was an unabashed criminal and scoundrel, but was never seen as a villain. He was played by the charismatic Bruce Campbell both here and on "Xena". This also marked the first appearance of the aspiring lawyer and love interest of Ioalus, Dirce.

3. In the first TV special, "Hercules and the Amazon Women," what actress, famous for another supernatural role, played Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons?

From Quiz Myth and Legend "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys"

Answer: Roma Downey

Roma Downey would go on to play Tess on the much beloved series "Touched by an Angel" shortly after this part. In the actual mythology, Hercules encountered Hippolyta on one of his labors and she willingly gave up the magical girdle he came for after falling in love with him.

4. In the episode "Green-Eyed Monster" Aphrodite's jealousy leads to love blossoming between two characters. What classic love story does this episode relate?

From Quiz "Hercules the Legendary Journeys" Season 3

Answer: Eros and Psyche

Eros is the son of Aphrodite and encounters Psyche due to Aphrodite's jealousy of her. She orders Eros to make Psyche fall in love with someone quite disgusting but Eros falls in love with psyche instead. The title refers to not only the concept of jealously but that Eros has a curse that actually changes him into that if he loves a mortal. Ultimately Aphrodite accepts their union and makes Psyche a god so they can be together. The story of Pygmalion and Galatea is similar to Pinocchio in that both creators want their perfect creations to come alive. Both Hero and Leander and Pyramus and Thisbe are believed to have influenced Shakespeare's masterpiece "Romeo and Juliet". In the end of both a mistaken death of one lover leads to both deaths in the end.

5. Which actor/actress, who would later go on to have a reoccurring character in the 'Hercules' universe, did not play another character during the five original made for TV specials?

From Quiz Myth and Legend "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys"

Answer: Kevin Smith

Lucy Lawless played Lysia in "Hercules and the Amazon Women" and went on to play Xena. Renee (Gabrielle) and Robert (Salmoneus) both appeared in "Hercules and the Lost Kingdom" as Deianaira (not to be confused with the Deianaira who would marry Hercules) and Waylan respectively. The woman who played the queen in "Hercules and the Lost Kingdom" would also go onto play Alcemene, Hercules's mother in the show. Kevin Smith would play Ares.

6. The episode "Web of Desire" is based around the story of Arachne the spider-woman. But it also introduces a new female supporting character that would go on to be a series regular for much of the rest of the run. Who is that character?

From Quiz "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" Season 4

Answer: Nebula

Callisto, Varia and Alti were re-occurring characters from the spin-off "Xena Warrior Princess". Nebula was played by Gina Torres and would be a semi-regular love interest of sorts for Iolaus and later a regular companion of Hercules.

7. The episode "The Other Side" revolved around the kidnapping of one god by another. Persephone was the kidnapped god, but who was her kidnapper?

From Quiz "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" Season 2

Answer: Hades

This was a very accurate retelling of the classic myth (minus Hercules's involvement). Just like in the myth, her mother Demeter withholds spring from Earth until her daughter is returned and ultimately a compromise is reached where Persephone is shared between Hades and Demeter in joint custody each getting 6 months of the year.

8. In addition to incorporating Greek mythology the show often utilized Greek drama as well. In "The Road to Calydon," a character from the "Oedipus" trilogy makes the first of many guest appearances. Who was it?

From Quiz "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" Season 1

Answer: Tiresias

The episode revolves around the friends and family of Hercules trying to give him a surprise party. Guests include Ioalus, Falafel, Alcemene and his brother Iphicles(in his last appearance before Kevin Smith assumed the role of Ares). Callisto has an ulterior motive as well, she hopes to gain immortality by eating from the tree.
