However, after Crona put a snake into Marie's drink for Medusa, she could no longer keep the madness back, and Stein had a breakdown and left Death City. Later, Marie and Crona, who regretted what s/he did, found and brought him back.

Maka Albarn, the show's main protagonist, was a very smart and strong character who was very close to her friends. Her mother was a powerful meister and her father, Spirit, was a Death Scythe. She didn't have a very good relationship with her father because his cheating led to her parents' divorce. Her mom then left to travel the world. Maka inherited from her parents the ability to become a weapon while unconscious, as seen when she fought the kishin. She also inherited her mother's Witch Hunter weapon ability. In the last episode, when all of her friends have been defeated, she took on the kishin by herself and beat him with a punch to the face. She was able to win because of her bravery.

Death the Kid can make a skateboard appear with his two rings called Beelzebub. He often rides it long distances, as seen when riding it to Egypt in episode 3, and it can retract its wheels and ride above ground. Beelzebub can go at incredible speeds, as seen when Kid catches up with the fastest train in the world on it.

S/he tells Maka and Soul that s/he'll be fine, and the two leave Crona to fight Asura.

Asura, a major antagonist, was kept imprisoned by Lord Death under the DWMA before being revived by Medusa and her followers. His soul wavelength sent out madness. The witch Arachne spread this wavelength around the world. Asura later defeated Lord Death and ate Arachne's soul. Afterwards, he fought Maka, Kid, and Black Star, along with their weapons, with Maka alone eventually killing him.
