Wacky Races Trivia Questions

1. The Slag Brothers, Rock and Gravel, were able to construct their vehicle from scratch. What was the name of their vehicle?

From Quiz
The Entrants and Cars in the "Wacky Races"

Answer: "The Boulder Mobile"

The vehicle was basically a boulder on wheels and whenever it broke down or was destroyed the two brothers just created another one from the nearest lump of rock. Hanna-Barbera took the concept of the Slag Brothers and used it to create the cartoon character "Captain Caveman". Red Max and the Gruesome Twosome were contestants in the race.

2. Car number 1 is the Bouldermobile - driven by whom?

From Quiz The Cars of the "Wacky Races"!

Answer: The Slag Brothers, Rock and Gravel

The Bouldermobile was a big rock with four stone wheels. It could be considered a less sophisticated version of the car Fred Flintstone drove. Appropriate, since Rock and Gravel could be considered less sophisticated versions of Fred Flintstone. Furballs with clubs, their appearances were later recycled for Captain Caveman.

3. The number 2 car was "The Creepy Coupe" driven by the Gruesome Twosome, Big and Little Gruesome. Little Gruesome sounded like Peter Lorre, but who did Big Gruesome sound like?

From Quiz The Entrants and Cars in the "Wacky Races"

Answer: Boris Karloff

Anyone old enough to remember could never forget the distinctive sibilant tones of the great Boris Karloff whose most famous role was that of Frankenstein's monster. Big Gruesome was portrayed as a Frankenstein monster lookalike whilst Little Gruesome was a purple coloured vampire. The vehicle "The Creepy Coupe" was a belfry on wheels which housed some ghosts and ghouls and could fly by having a set of wings belonging to a dragon.

4. The number 3 car was an invention of the mad scientist Professor Pat Pending. What did he call his car?

From Quiz The Entrants and Cars in the "Wacky Races"

Answer: "The Convert-A-Car"

This vehicle could, and did, change into everything imaginable. Unfortunately the Professor was as mad as a hatter and some of his inventions were totally impracticable. The transformations included a motorcycle, flying carpet, a Blimp, and a rocket. Whereas Dick Dastardly was evil Pat Pending was a good Samaritan and it was usually him and his inventions which saved the others from the traps set by the diabolical duo of Dastardly and Muttley.

5. Coming up now is car number 3 - at least, I THINK it's a car. What is the name of Professor Pat Pending's invention?

From Quiz The Cars of the "Wacky Races"!

Answer: The Convert-a-Car

Car number 3 was a Transformer years before Optimus Prime came along. If you picked The Gadgetmobile, then you picked the name of Inspector Gadget's car.

6. The Number 4 car is The Red Max's distinctive WW1 fighter-on-wheels. Can you name this vehicle?

From Quiz The Cars of the "Wacky Races"!

Answer: The Crimson Haybailer

I guess the Haybailer was just the thing for barnstorming. The Scarlet Pumpernickel was a Daffy Duck character - the others I made up.

7. Here comes the number 5 car. Something's different here, though. Can you tell me how this entry differs from the others?

From Quiz The Cars of the "Wacky Races"!

Answer: A female driver - the rest are all male

Penelope Pitstop's Compact Pussycat was more like a mobile beauty salon than a racecar, but it did manage to win 4 races. Car number 7 contained the seven-man Ant Hill Mob. Peter Perfect's car number 10 had the roll bar. And all the cars had engines, even the Bouldermobile - although that one was a little, umm, organic.

8. The "Army Surplus Special" was the number 6 car. It was driven by Private Meekly, but who was in command of the vehicle?

From Quiz The Entrants and Cars in the "Wacky Races"

Answer: Sergeant Blast

A mixture of army tractor and tank, including its cannon. Sergeant Blast (a parody of "Gomer Pyle" perhaps?) gave the orders and Private Meekly carried them out. The vehicle was also known as the "Surplus Six".

9. Number 7 is driven by the notorious Ant Hill Mob led by Clyde and is based on the old gangster types from the 1930's and 40's. Known as the "Bullet-Proof Bomb" the 1920's saloon car was also known as ... What?

From Quiz The Entrants and Cars in the "Wacky Races"

Answer: "The Roaring Plenty"

The glorious Ant Hill Mob. The cartoon antonym to the Keystone Kops. Led by an Edward G. Robinson sound-a-like called Clyde, possibly after Clyde Barrow from Bonnie and Clyde fame, the Mob rode in "The Bullet-Proof Bomb" A.K.A. "The Roaring Plenty" and constantly came to the rescue of Penelope Pitstop.

10. Oh, look - it's the number 7 car, owned and operated by The Ant Hill Mob. It is called the Bulletproof Bomb, but what other name has it been referred to?

From Quiz The Cars of the "Wacky Races"!

Answer: The Roaring Plenty

The Getaway Genius is an old "Batman" villain, while the Chicago 7 were Black Panthers. The High Roller I made up. The Ant Hill Mob got a lot better role in the sequel series, "The Perils of Penelope Pitstop", and was one of only three of the race teams than appeared in another cartoon after the "Wacky Races".

11. Here come Luke and Blubber Bear, driving the number 8 car. Tell me which state the car (and they) are from.

From Quiz The Cars of the "Wacky Races"!

Answer: Arkansas

The Arkansas Chugabug, pride of the hills, was essentially a plank with a potbellied stove, which Luke steered with his feet. Good ol' Luke - nothing fazes him. He even drove through some wargames once. Didn't bat an eye.

12. "The Turbo Terrific", a drag racer that tended to regularly fall apart, was driven by an all-American jock who had a crush on Miss Pitstop. What was this hunk's name?

From Quiz The Entrants and Cars in the "Wacky Races"

Answer: Peter Perfect

Also known as the "Varoom Roadster" the "Turbo Terrific" was not noted for its reliability. Peter tended to romance his 'Pretty Penny' in between fixing his car.

13. The number nine car is Peter Perfect's Turbo Terrific. What can be said about his car?

From Quiz The Cars of the "Wacky Races"!

Answer: It has the biggest engine

The Turbo Terrific is a long, thin car with a long thin engine. It has the misfortune of being the car that falls apart most often. "The Wacky Races" was based on the movie "The Great Race". The characters of Dick Dastardly and Penelope Pitstop can both be seen as derived from characters in the movie. If so, Peter should probably be the hero of the group - and yet he is one of the least developed characters in the cartoon. Go figure.

14. The number 10 vehicle was "The Buzz Wagon", driven by Rufus Ruffcut and Sawtooth. But who, or what, was Sawtooth?

From Quiz The Entrants and Cars in the "Wacky Races"

Answer: A Beaver

The beaver Sawtooth was joined by the muscle-bound logger Rufus Ruffcut. The vehicles wheels were buzz saws which cut through everything in their path. Like the Slag Brothers Rufus could recreate his vehicle quickly from the local woodland.

15. Up rolls car number 10 - The Buzzwagon, driven by Rufus Ruffcut. Who, or what, is his co-pilot?

From Quiz The Cars of the "Wacky Races"!

Answer: Sawtooth, a beaver

I've always considered this car to be the Canadian entry. In one episode, Rufus showed superhuman strength, using a whole tree as a baseball bat.

16. And there they go - for how many seasons did "The Wacky Races" run?

From Quiz The Cars of the "Wacky Races"!

Answer: 2 - but they were GOOD seasons

Most cartoons from that era lasted a single season. The Races lasted two seasons - 1968/69 and 1969/70. There were a total of 34 races, from The See-Saw to Arkansas to the Overseas Hi-Way Race, run two races per episode.

17. How many races did the Mean Machine win?

From Quiz The Cars of the "Wacky Races"!

Answer: One, but Dick was disqualified afterwards.

Yes, Dick Dastardly actually crossed the finish line first once - or seemed to. Actually, his car's nose cone extended so that he would seem to "win by a nose".

18. OK, now for the ultimate question - which car was the fastest?

From Quiz The Cars of the "Wacky Races"!

Answer: The Mean Machine

The races usually began with the rocket powered Mean Machine taking a commanding lead, after which Dick and Muttley would attempt to set traps that would put the others out of the race. These would usually backfire. Hope you enjoyed the quiz. My thanks to Wikipedia, the IMDB, and, of course, www.hotink.com/wacky, the premiere "Wacky Races" website.
