Doctor Who - Series 2 Trivia Questions

1. The 2005 "Children in Need" charity special aired between the "Doctor Who" Series 1 finale and the Christmas Special "The Christmas Invasion". What is the title of this short?

From Quiz
"Doctor Who" Shorts from Series 2

Answer: Born Again

"Born Again" is an appropriate title to introduce the newly-regenerated Doctor (David Tennant, replacing Christopher Eccleston). The special provided an opportunity for Tennant to show his reaction to his new body, as he proclaims over his hair, his sideburns, and the fact that he has (and can feel) a mole. Throughout the short, Rose is stunned and disbelieving. At first she thinks the Doctor has been transmatted away and replaced, and she asks him if he is a Slitheen. The Doctor argues that she saw him change right in front of her.

2. "New Earth" - The Doctor and Rose head far into the future to another planet. Which foe from their past intercepts them there?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" - Series 2

Answer: Lady Cassandra

Heading to the year 5,000,000,023, the Doctor (newly transformed) and Rose head to New Earth where, to the Doctor's surprise, they're summoned to a local hospital specializing in advanced cures for all of the diseases ever seen. There, the Doctor finds the Face of Boe near death, but Rose is sidetracked and attacked by Lady Cassandra who, in a shocking plot twist, takes over the companion's mind to secure a new body and set free the diseased humans in the basement of the hospital building. Lady Cassandra is forced to take over several bodies during the course of the story, inevitably taking over one that puts her near death. After putting an end to the contagion spreading through the hospital and speaking to the enigmatic Face of Boe, he and Rose take Lady Cassandra back in time to meet her former self and, narcissistically, spend her last moments telling her how beautiful she looks.

3. What year was little Reinette presumably in?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "The Girl In The Fireplace"

Answer: 1727

Little Reinette was peeking out at the Doctor through her fireplace when the Doctor started asking her lots of questions to figure out who she was and why she was in there. Reinette believed she was living in the 1720s', though she was really in a 51st Century ship.

4. What is the "important" message the Doctor has to tell Jackie and Mickey?

From Quiz "Christmas Invasion"

Answer: merry christmas

The Doctor: "There was something I had to tell you. Something important. What was it? No, hold on, sh-sh-sh... OH! I know! Merry Christmas!" He passed out immediately after giving this message.

5. To convince Rose that he is, indeed, who he says he is, the Doctor reminds her of the first word that he said to her when they met. What was the word?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" Shorts from Series 2

Answer: "Run!"

The Doctor reminds Rose of the events seen in the Series 1 episode "Rose", when she was about to be killed by shop-window dummies (Autons animated by the Nestene Consciousness). He grabs her hand and simply says, "Run!" Having just regenerated, David Tennant's Doctor is able to convince Rose with this memory, but then something goes wrong with his regeneration cycle, and the short leaves off with the TARDIS heading for London on Christmas Eve.

6. "Tooth and Claw" - This episode features which famous British historical figure who, as it seems, commissioned Torchwood?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" - Series 2

Answer: Queen Victoria

Attempting to travel back in time to 1979 to go to a concert, The Doctor and Rose accidentally head to 1879 Scotland at the precise time Queen Victoria heads toward Balmoral Castle. They all end up reaching a monastery for the night, but end up coming face to face with a group of monks led by a werewolf. What results is a fight for their lives. Rose ends up captured and placed under duress with the other women in the building while The Doctor spends time with Queen Victoria. Ultimately they're able to save the day by killing the werewolf with a special device used to magnify moonlight through the Koh-i-Noor Diamond. Queen Victoria, however, is scratched by the beast (and, it seems, infected with haemophilia). When The Doctor and Rose leave, Queen Victoria decides to form Torchwood in anticipation of their possible return.

7. Where was the Clockwork droid hiding in Reinette's room?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "The Girl In The Fireplace"

Answer: Under her bed

In Reinette's 1727 bedroom, the clockwork droid hid under her bed, until the Doctor temporarily destroyed it.

8. How many times does the Doctor wake up?

From Quiz "Christmas Invasion"

Answer: Twice

The first time he wakes up, Rose purposefully awakens him so he can save them from the killer Christmas tree. However, she had awakened him too soon and he passes out again after warning her that something was coming. The second time he wakes up it was thanks to the spilled thermos of tea.

9. In the first Tardisode, the prequel to "New Earth", the Sisters of Plenitude claim the ability to cure anything. What terminal disease is cured as a demonstration?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" Shorts from Series 2

Answer: Autrey syndrome

The first Tardisode plays like an advertisement trying to convince you to come to New Earth to be cured of whatever might be ailing you. No explanation is given regarding Autrey syndrome, apart from the fact that it is terminal. Right at the end of the short, a little foreshadowing is provided to hint that all might not be well... the screen goes black and you hear screams and a patient crying, "Help me! Please, help me!"

10. "School Reunion" - This episode saw the return of what former companion of The Doctor?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" - Series 2

Answer: Sarah Jane Smith

Rose and The Doctor are called back to the present day by Mickey in order to uncover the truth about some odd goings-on at a private school. The case inevitably forces them to run into former companion Sarah Jane Smith who traveled with the Third/Fourth Doctor in the past; she also happens to have K-9 Mk. III in her possession. They all help discover the presence of the Krillitanes who've been using the schoolchildren to unravel the mysteries of the universe. They're all able to stop the foes (with the explosive help of K-9). Sarah Jane is finally able to say goodbye to The Doctor (who gives her the next upgrade of K-9 to continue her own adventures) before Mickey joins the duo in the TARDIS.

11. Who did the Doctor realize Reinette was?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "The Girl In The Fireplace"

Answer: Madame de Pompadour & Madame

The third time that the Doctor went through the fireplace, Reinette was an adult and was nearly the girlfriend of the king of France.

12. What does the Doctor name the masked things which had been controlling the Christmas tree?

From Quiz "Christmas Invasion"

Answer: Pilot fish

Mickey looked up pilot fish to see what he meant by that, and discovered that they were tiny fish which swam around sharks.

13. The Tardisode prequel to "Tooth and Claw" opens with a meteor crashing into the earth. Then, 300 years later, who gets attacked by a werewolf?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" Shorts from Series 2

Answer: An old man

In the episode "Tooth and Claw", we learn that the meteor fell to earth in 1540, landing near a monastery. Thus we get to see the beginning of the 'legend' of the werewolf of the Scottish moors. The episode "Tooth and Claw" takes place in 1879.

14. "The Girl in the Fireplace" - What historical figure became the focus of The Doctor in this episode?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" - Series 2

Answer: Madame de Pompadour

The Doctor, Rose, and Mickey end up on a spaceship far in the future and far across space which, oddly, seems to have doorways and windows into pre-Revolutionary France. The Doctor ends up embroiled in a plot between a race of clockwork aliens and the beautiful Reinette, better known as Madame de Pompadour, the mistress of Louis XV. Popping into Reinette's life at different moments, The Doctor is able to save her and protect her brain, but only by separating himself and the robots from their spaceship once and for all. He only returns through the fireplace, carefully reconstructed from his first meeting with Reinette.

15. When the clockwork droids did not have the parts to use the ship, what did they do?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "The Girl In The Fireplace"

Answer: Used the crew's body parts

In the room where the Doctor and Rose and Mickey watched Reinette, the clockwork droid started attacking her, so they ran into the room and shut it down. Once it rebooted again, the Doctor asked it why there was no crew. It responded 'we did not have the parts.'

16. What sarcastic comment does Rose make about tea?

From Quiz "Christmas Invasion"

Answer: "Ah, the solution to everything."

Jackie: "Here we go. Nice cup of tea." Rose: "Ah, the solution to everything." It actually turns out that it was the solution to everything, as the Doctor woke up as a direct result of Jackie bringing the tea on board.

17. In the "School Reunion" prequel Tardisode, which character do we see researching on the Internet for signs of aliens?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" Shorts from Series 2

Answer: Mickey Smith

In the episode "School Reunion", Mickey is upset with being considered the equivalent of the metal dog (a reference to K-9, who also appears in the episode). In this prequel, he actively tries to find evidence that will bring Rose and the TARDIS (and the Doctor) back to Earth, proving that he is useful.

18. What did the Doctor call the horse that he found?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "The Girl In The Fireplace"

Answer: Arthur

When they were leaving the room, the Doctor told Rose and Mickey to run and to take Arthur with them. Rose told him that he was not going to keep the horse and he replied "I let you keep Mickey!"

19. What object is there in his dressing gown which initially puzzles the Doctor before he passes out for the second time?

From Quiz "Christmas Invasion"

Answer: An apple

The Doctor: "If there are pilot fish then- Why is there an apple in my dressing gown?" Jackie: "That's Howard's, sorry." The Doctor: "He keeps apples in his dressing gown?" Jackie: "He gets hungry." The Doctor: "What, he gets hungry in his sleep?" Jackie: "Sometimes." He barely managed to warn Rose about the Sycorax before he went unconscious again.

20. What happens to disable the spaceship "SS Madame de Pompadour" in the Tardisode prequel to "The Girl in the Fireplace"?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" Shorts from Series 2

Answer: It encounters an ion storm

I think this might be my favourite Tardisode. After the effects of the ion storm have severely damaged the ship, the scene shows a crew member just waking up. The sound of clockwork gets louder as 'something' approaches the injured woman, and at first she is relieved, but it quickly turns to screams as the scene cuts away to an ornate clock on a fireplace mantel.

21. What did the Doctor say to always bring to a party?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "The Girl In The Fireplace"

Answer: A banana

The Doctor was acting drunk when he went to get Mickey and Rose, and he said that they should always bring a banana to a party.

22. Why does Rose want Jackie, Mickey, and the still-unconscious Doctor to go into the TARDIS?

From Quiz "Christmas Invasion"

Answer: So they can hide

She explains that she doesn't know what to do because she's traveled with the Doctor and everything but when she's stuck at home without him she's useless, and that the TARDIS is the only currently safe place on the Earth.

23. In the Tardisode prequel to "Rise of the Cybermen", alternate universe Ricky Smith is watching a report on John Lumic, head of Cybus Industries. How many people does the report say have gone missing in the 'South American State'?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" Shorts from Series 2

Answer: 265,000

The report goes on to describe the 'upgrades' and actually shows a Cyberman, which is somewhat contrary to the actual episode "Rise of the Cybermen" wherein the appearance of Cybermen was a complete surprise to everyone when it happened. Ricky, of course, is the alternate version of Mickey Smith, who the Doctor always calls 'Ricky', anyway, insisting that it is his real name.

24. When were the clockwork droids coming to get Reinette?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "The Girl In The Fireplace"

Answer: After her 37th birthday

When Reinette was 32 years old Rose came to warn her about the clockwork droids coming after her 37th birthday and that the Doctor promised to come and save her.

25. What does the Doctor ask Rose when he opens the TARDIS doors after waking up for the second time?

From Quiz "Christmas Invasion"

Answer: "Did you miss me?"

He does inquire of Rose how he looked, but that was after he opened the doors, walked out, and greeted Mickey and Harriet.

26. Tardisode number six falls between the two-part Cyberman stories "Rise of the Cybermen" and "The Age of Steel". It shows the production of Cybermen going into effect around the globe, and demands that what happen to all incompatible versions?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" Shorts from Series 2

Answer: Delete

"Delete" is the catch phrase of the Cybermen, in the same way that "Exterminate" is for the Daleks. It is a nice foreshadowing of the difficulty that the Doctor has in the episode "Rise of the Cybermen" when he tries to prevent being attacked by the Cybermen by volunteering for an upgrade. Instead of being accepted, the Cybermen call him 'incompatible', and continue their attack.

27. How did the Doctor get through the time window?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "The Girl In The Fireplace"

Answer: On a horse

The night of the party at the king's mansion, the Doctor broke through the window on Arthur, the horse, right when the clockwork droids were about to remove Reinette's head.

28. What particularly disappoints the Doctor about his appearance?

From Quiz "Christmas Invasion"

Answer: The fact that he's not ginger

The Doctor: "Be honest. How do I look?" Rose: "...Different." The Doctor: "Good different or bad different?" Rose: "Just... different." The Doctor: "Am I... ginger?" Rose: "No, you're just sort of brown." The Doctor: "Aww, I wanted to be ginger! I could have been ginger. And you, Rose Tyler, fat lot of good you were, you gave up on me- oo, that's rude. I stuck my arm out, I'm rude. Rude and not ginger." He was completely ignoring the fact that his changing at all had bewildered and worried Rose and the others, of course.

29. "Fear Her" - The Doctor and Rose end up facing off against an Isolus during what particular event?

From Quiz "Doctor Who" - Series 2

Answer: 2012 Olympic Games

Landing in London in 2012, The Doctor and Rose investigate the disappearance of several children in a neighbourhood only to determine that an Isolus is using a young girl to remedy its loneliness. As it turns out, the girl, Chloe, is able to draw things and pull people into the pages she creates. When the Doctor disappears in this manner, Rose is forced to find the spaceship and toss it into the Olympic Torch, freeing the Isolus and saving the world from being pulled into the paper. The Doctor, always one to showboat a bit, lights the Olympic Cauldron.

30. Where was the Doctor stuck?

From Quiz "Doctor Who": "The Girl In The Fireplace"

Answer: The slow path

After the Doctor had burst through on Arthur he knew he could not get back. All of the links with the ship had broken and he would be stuck there for 3000 years. Little did he know, Reinette had moved the fireplace from which they had first communicated to her present room. The Doctor could then travel back to his own reality.
