Professor Layton Games Trivia Questions

1. The very first mystery of the game concerns the letter received by Professor Layton in the very beginning of the story. When the first letter of each line of the note is read, what is spelled out?

From Quiz
Ten Mysteries of "The Last Specter"

Answer: HELP SOS

Receiving this letter, Layton rushes along to the town of Misthallery to begin scouting out a mystery and joined by his new assistant, Emmy Altava, they continue on with this cryptic note. The first puzzle of the game asks Layton and Emmy to solve a secret code written in the letter-- to solve it, simply follow down along the side. Each lines' first letter spells out the message, HELP SOS. Layton is very much concerned with the note as his friend, Clark Triton, who sent it, would never write in this way on a typewriter. When they ask Triton, it turns out that he didn't write it at all! Layton and Emmy soon discover that the letter was written by Luke, Clark's young son, and he wrote it in code in order to determine whether or not the Professor could be trusted.

2. At the start of the game, Professor Layton and Luke are invited to a time machine demonstration. They find out that the Prime Minister, Bill Hawks is there to make a speech, but what is his wife's name?

From Quiz How Much Do You Know About "Unwound Future"?

Answer: Caroline

Bill Hawks has a wife called Caroline. Caroline watched Bill disappear into the time machine but was baffled by his disappearance. Caroline only has two speaking parts during the game, however she appears in the voice section in bonuses.

3. Which words complete the first title in the series?

From Quiz Puzzle-Solver Extraordinaire

Answer: "The Curious Village"

"Professor Layton and the Curious Village" was created by the Japanese company Level-5. They also released the "Dark Cloud" games for the Sony Playstation 2 and the "White Knight Chronicles" games for the Sony Playstation 3.

4. How many puzzles are there in the game?

From Quiz "Professor Layton and the Curious Village" (DS)

Answer: 135

There are 100 puzzles which can be found by talking to the citizens of St. Mystere and through the storyline. There are a further twenty puzzles which can be found by tapping on objects in the background. Finally, there are fifteen more challenging puzzles found by completing certain tasks.

5. Who is Professor Layton's antagonist?

From Quiz Citizens of "The Curious Village"

Answer: Don Paolo

Throughout the bulk of the mystery investigated by Professor Layton and his assistant, Luke, Don Paolo is disguised as the famous Inspector Chemley, in town to solve a murder mystery. When Layton's confrontation with the impostor inspector comes to a climax, Don Paolo rips off his mask, reveals himself, and escapes out the window in Reinhold Manor. Don Paolo doesn't return until the end of the game to attack Layton and Luke in the cottage on the top of the tower in the north end of town. Using a device constructed with odds and ends in the luxurious cottage, Layton is able to escape with the Reinhold heiress and fly down to the streets of St. Mystere. In doing this, he also destroys Don Paolo's attack ship. Although Don Paolo vows to return, Layton is safe until then. People may recognize Paolo by his stereotypical 'evil mustache'.

6. Who did Clive disguise himself as in "Professor Layton and the Unwound Future"?

From Quiz Professor Layton!

Answer: Future Luke

Clive pretended to be the older version of little Luke. By luring the professor to 'the future version of London', he hoped the professor could save him from the madness, just like he did before.

7. When Layton and Luke step out of the clock shop, they find that they are ten years into the future. Who is the first character they meet in the "future?"

From Quiz How Much Do You Know About "Unwound Future"?

Answer: Art

The first character they meet is Art, a friendly construction worker who gives Layton and Luke two puzzles during the game. He lives in "Future London" but is evacuated to the surface when Clive's plan goes out of control.

8. The second mystery of the game involves a missing leader, but who is this leader specifically?

From Quiz Ten Mysteries of "The Unwound Future"

Answer: The Prime Minister

One week before Professor Layton and Luke received their strange letter, they attended a scientific demonstration with Inspector Chelmey and Prime Minister Bill Hawks present. When the mysterious scientist involved in the demonstration asks Hawks to volunteer to be a part of a test run on the machine, he accepts. It turns out that this large device is a time machine. When the doctor behind the controls starts up the console, the machine destroys itself and he and Hawks vanish without a trace. Over the next week, many of London's chief scientists also start to go missing. Rumour has it, they're all being held hostage. A look through Scotland Yard's archives in the present time confirms (for Layton at least) that Hawks is alive. Inevitably, Layton and Luke find Bill Hawks when they finally come face to face with the supposed future Professor Layton. Later in the game, it is also revealed that Hawks was the man responsible for Claire's death many years ago. In the end of the game, Hawks is found hooked up to a large detonation device in the generator of a mobile fortress. Yikes!

9. Professor Layton and Luke both discover a ticket in the hands of Dr. Schrader. For what destination is the ticket?

From Quiz Ten Mysteries of "The Diabolical Box"

Answer: Folsense

When Layton and Luke find Dr. Schrader dead in his apartment, they discover that he is in possession of a weird ticket for a ride on the Molentary Express. Although the cryptic ticket doesn't really explain their destination, the two of them crack the puzzle behind it in a long tunnel. As it turns out, the ticket itself was another riddle and their destination was the so-called phantom town of Folsense. They deduce that the doctor must've visited this location, only accessible by riding in the deluxe car of the Molentary Express as you cross through the tunnel. Coincidentally, Luke, Layton, and Flora all fell asleep in the deluxe car at this point in time.

10. In both games, Professor Hershel Layton travels with his apprentice/assistant, who shares his first name with a new testament book of the Bible. Which one?

From Quiz Puzzle-Solver Extraordinaire

Answer: Luke

Luke's full name is Luke Triton and he accompanies the Professor on his adventures in the first two games. In the UK release, Luke is voiced by Maria Darling, who also voices Marsha in the children's television programme "Roary The Racing Car".

11. What colour is the Laytonmobile?

From Quiz "Professor Layton and the Curious Village" (DS)

Answer: Red

The Laytonmobile is built with a high ceiling to accommodate Layton's hat which he never takes off. Despite its good condition, Luke believes that nobody would want to steal it.

12. If riddles disappear from St. Mystere, who can Layton visit to complete them?

From Quiz Citizens of "The Curious Village"

Answer: Granny R

Granny R's house is in the town square, and although Layton and Luke can't access it immediately, it will be introduced after the first few chapters of the game. When Layton and Luke enter her residence, they will find her standing outside a small shack. After a short introduction, Granny R will allow you to enter the house within the house and play whatever riddles you may have missed along the puzzle route. If you happened to play them all throughout the quest, then there won't be anything inside, but if you've missed a substantial amount of riddles, then there can be multiple rooms inside the shack. Other than for this reason, Granny R never seems to leave her house, and despite the fact that she houses riddles, she never has an original one that she gives to Layton.

13. Professor Layton and Luke first come to notice a horrible rumbling noise in St. Mystere. The shockwave of this scares off Lady Dahlia's cat. What is the cat's name?

From Quiz Ten Mysteries of "The Curious Village"

Answer: Claudia

When this noise first hits, Claudia is frightened away, and Lady Dahlia's butler, Matthew, is unable to catch the cat before it escapes into the streets of St. Mystere. Before Layton and Luke can go on the hunt for the Golden Apple, they must find Claudia in town. This quest takes them back across the river and into the streets before Claudia is finally captured. However, in order to get the cat back, Layton and Luke need to complete a puzzle given to them by Agnes, 'Pigpen Partitions', so that they can get some Fish Bones to give to Claudia. This will, in turn, end Chapter 2, and Claudia will be returned to Lady Dahlia in the manor. However, this won't solve the mystery behind the noise, which citizens of St. Mystere assume are coming from the creepy tower in the north end of town. The incident with Claudia also introduces the fact that Luke has affection for animals.

14. Who/what is the Golden Apple in "Professor Layton and the Curious Village"?

From Quiz Professor Layton!

Answer: Flora

Flora is the late baron's daughter, and therefore his most precious treasure. The golden apple is the key to the baron's fortune.

15. After passing Max, Layton and Luke spot a hotel, but what is the hotel called?

From Quiz How Much Do You Know About "Unwound Future"?

Answer: Hotel Duke

The Hotel Duke is on Flatstone Street and is run by Becky and her grandmother Margaret. Margaret's husband is Segal, who usually lurks around the Black Market. Layton and Luke stay here until they solve the mystery, starting with information from Becky.

16. What was the object that Professor Layton was trying to find in the village of St Mystere in his first adventure?

From Quiz Puzzle-Solver Extraordinaire

17. How many puzzles have a value of 99 Picarats?

From Quiz "Professor Layton and the Curious Village" (DS)

Answer: Three

Puzzles #130, #131 and #135 are the only puzzles worth 99 Picarats. One could complete #131 through trial and error without losing any Picarats. The other two would be much harder to guess though.

18. Who is Claudia's owner?

From Quiz Citizens of "The Curious Village"

Answer: Lady Dahlia

After the death of Baron Reinhold, Reinhold Manor was placed into the hands of Lady Dahlia, Reinhold's second wife. Although Lady Dahlia was supposed to be a spitting image of Reinhold's first wife, the Baron's daughter never took to her, and was placed in the cottage at the top of the tower. Lady Dahlia was the one who sent out for Professor Layton in the first place, asking him to be the one to search for the treasure behind the Golden Apple. As the main objective progresses, it turns out that Lady Dahlia is stubborn and demanding, and Professor Layton and Luke must go out in search of her cat, Claudia, when she runs away at the sound of the rumbling tower. By the time Claudia is returned (at the end of the second chapter), something else has happened, and the duo is thrown off the Golden Apple's trail once again.

19. Which animal is on top of the Elysian Box in "Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box"?

From Quiz Professor Layton!

Answer: A goat

The elysian box has a goat head on top of it. Professor Layton and Luke showed a picture to everyone in the hotel, but the middle piece was missing, which made people, including inspector Chelmey, believe it was actually a frog.

20. A strange fog appears every time the specter attacks. What is used to generate it?

From Quiz Ten Mysteries of "The Last Specter"

Answer: Water from the canals

After discovering the true nature of the specter, Layton is able to deduce from Luke's expertly-written records of the attacks that the fog surrounding the creature is not natural. This thick fog, obscuring everything from view on nights of the attacks, actually covered up the truth behind what was going on those dangerous nights in Misthallery. It is also determined that someone is using the water from the city's canals to do so, and that person is the one behind the whole plot.

21. After getting information from Becky, Layton and Luke decide to head to the subway station to visit their teacher Doctor Andrew Schrader. Doctor Schrader is at Auckland Lane, but what is the name of the hospital?

From Quiz How Much Do You Know About "Unwound Future"?

Answer: Green Hospital

Doctor Schrader was in the Green Hospital. The receptionist, Natalia, said that "Old 312 has quite the fan club." 312 is the room of Schrader, however unbeknownst to Layton and Luke, Doctor Schrader is not what he seems...

22. One mystery is that of the Elysian Box's location. Who was in possession of it this whole time?

From Quiz Ten Mysteries of "The Diabolical Box"

Answer: Don Paolo

After Professor Layton and Luke determine the image in the torn photograph, they are called to the hotel in Folsense to witness Inspector's Chemley's unveiling of the culprit. Although Chemley claims that Sammy Thunder, the conductor of the Molentary Express and Mr. Beluga's nephew, is the culprit, Professor Layton uses the photograph (minus the missing piece) to determine that Flora is, in fact, the one behind it all. Flora reveals herself to be Don Paolo in disguise. The real Flora had been kidnapped back in Dropstone and placed in a barn for the duration. Don Paolo escapes, but drops the Elysian Box in the hotel in his hasty exit revealing that he had it the whole time.

23. The Professor Layton series of games involves solving puzzles to progress through the game, but what is the small item that you may need if you need a little assistance?

From Quiz Puzzle-Solver Extraordinaire

Answer: Hint Coin

24. Who was responsible for abducting the citizens of St. Mystere?

From Quiz Citizens of "The Curious Village"

Answer: Bruno

Bruno, it is determined, is probably one of the only residents of St. Mystere who is not actually a robot. When Layton and Luke first encounter the character, he is stuffing one of the townspeople into a large sack and carrying them off. After a chase, they manage to lose Bruno, who later turns up in the basement of the forbidden tower. This solves a few mysteries of the town, namely the abductions and the mystery behind the actual citizens. It turns out that they were all robots, and Bruno was the one repairing them when they began to wear down. The rumbling in the tower is also explained. When Bruno takes one of the citizens in for a tune-up, the machinery in the tower's basement fires up and causes the noise. Having served the late Baron Reinhold for as long as he did, Bruno holds pride in his work- every one of the residents of St. Mystere save the Golden Apple.

25. Layton, Luke, and Emmy discovered that the strange flute heard in Misthallery summoned and calmed a beast by what name?

From Quiz Ten Mysteries of "The Last Specter"

Answer: Loosha

According to Luke, the villagers of the area used a magical flute in order to summon a specter to protect them. As per the tale, whoever possesses this instrument can use the specter to do their bidding. Regardless, when the specter appears, the flute is played and its echo makes it difficult to locate. The trio searches the Black Market and is led to a buyer at Barde's Manor, also the location of a lake and the start of the city's drainage pipe system. As they later discovered, the entire town could hear the flute because Arianna was playing it near the drainage opening, spreading it through the entire area...but it wasn't to summon the specter. Instead, it called upon Loosha, a creature from an ancient race dedicated to protecting the town from the evil specter.

26. After finding a mysterious note from "Future Luke" in the Laytonmobile, Layton and Luke decide to head to the Gilded 7 Casino. On the way they meet Ward, a member of the Family. What puzzle does he give you?

From Quiz How Much Do You Know About "Unwound Future"?

Answer: Upon Reflection

Ward gives Layton number 26, Upon Reflection. After solving this puzzle, Layton and Luke gain access to the Gilded 7, where the Family and Future Luke are waiting for them.

27. What is Future Luke's actual name?

From Quiz Ten Mysteries of "The Unwound Future"

Answer: Clive

Arriving in Future London they are told to head onward to a hospital at 123 Auckland St to visit Dr. Andrew Schrader, Professor Layton's old mentor, in Room 312. This meeting leads to the discovery of an old car and new note sending them to the Gilded 7 Casino on Flatstone Street, a reputed hotbed of criminal activity. Here is where Layton and Luke meet the future Luke. He explains that he sent them on their tasks to prove to them that they were sent into the future and he asks Layton to participate in a battle of wits involving four cards. Later in the story, Future Luke is discovered to be a mastermind behind the whole operation. Actually a young man named Clive in a Future Luke disguise, his building was destroyed by the original time machine experiment many years ago and he has sought revenge ever since. His plan of vengeance is the final grand scheme thwarted by Professor Layton.

28. The fifth mystery of the game revolves around Tom, who has gone missing on the train. Who or what is Tom?

From Quiz Ten Mysteries of "The Diabolical Box"

Answer: Babette's dog

In the first chapter of the game, Tom goes missing and rich socialite Babette commissions Inspector Chemley to find him. Professor Layton and Luke decide to make finding Tom on the train a priority. Along the way, they find a tiny shoe in one of the car hallways, a small hat in a narrow compartment of the dining car's kitchen, and scraps on the floor in Babette's room. When Luke and Layton deduce that Tom is, in fact, a dog, they find Tom in Flora's arms on the observation deck at the rear of the train. If you give Tom back to Babette, she gives you a pet house for your hamster.

29. What is the name of Baron Reinhold's daughter?

From Quiz Citizens of "The Curious Village"

Answer: Flora & Flora Reinhold

Flora, revealed to be the Golden Apple of St. Mystere, is found in a few locations during the game. Professor Layton and Luke first find her in the northern streets of town after reaching the tower entrance, but before entering the park to the west. After she flees the scene, they don't see her again until they reach the top of the tower and find her amongst the luxuries of the mysterious cottage. After Don Paolo attacks the tower, Professor Layton has to create a device to get them safely to the ground, and when they land, he discovers how to find the secret treasure of the Golden Apple. By pressing on a specific piece on Flora's portrait in the entrance of Reinhold Manor, a secret passage opens leading to the Baron's wealth. Flora decides not to take it and leaves St. Mystere with Layton and Luke so as to preserve the town and its people.

30. The fifth mystery is regarding Lady Dahlia. Lady Dahlia bears an uncanny resemblance to which woman?

From Quiz Ten Mysteries of "The Curious Village"

Answer: Violet

Violet happens to be Baron Reinhold's late wife, and during the course of Layton's investigations, her grave is visited on the grounds of Reinhold Manor. This mystery is spawned after Layton and Luke view a picture on Violet on the desk in Lady Dahlia's study, and they happen to notice the resemblance between Dahlia and Violet. As it turns out, there's a reason behind this as well. Baron Reinhold had Dahlia created to that Flora would have a motherly figure growing up after Violet passed away. Unfortunately, in her youth, Flora never took to Lady Dahlia, and the Baron's plan did not go through as well. Despite her father's intentions, Flora resigned to the cottage on the top of the tower in the center of town, waiting for a rightful guardian to rescue her. After passing the town's trials, Layton turns out to be that person.
