License Plates Trivia Questions

1. A standard German license plate number consists of three character groups. What is their correct order?

From Quiz
German License Plates Decoded

Answer: Two groups of letters followed by a number

The most basic license plate has, on the left, first the blue European Union field with the "D" for Germany, then a first group of one to three letters, then the seal of the district (Kreis), then a second group of letters (one or two) and finally a number of up to four digits. The total number of characters can however be a maximum of eight, so plates with a 3-2-4 code cannot be issued.

2. If I saw the letter 'B' on the license plate, what country would the car be from?

From Quiz European Country License Plate Letters

Answer: Belgium

The country is famous for Agatha Christie's fictional detective and Belgian lace. Having been there, it is a beautiful, peaceful country. The Atomium near Brussels is spectacular, and the Manneken Pis, also in Brussels, is one of the best known sculptures in Europe, if a little rude!

3. In the Republic of Ireland, vehicles must carry a registration plate that bears certain information including a code for each county or city. Under the system that was introduced in 1987, what was the county identifier for Donegal?

From Quiz Crack The Irish Car Registration Code

Answer: DL

The Republic always had county identifiers, but as various combinations of letters and numerals ran out, a new system was introduced in 1987. A typical Co Donegal registration would be 09 DL 4444 (for the year, the county identifier and a record of the individual vehicle).

4. In which year were the first car registration plates issued in the UK?

From Quiz British Car Registration Plates

Answer: 1903

The growing popularity of motor cars led to the Motor Car Act of 1903 in which the British government took various steps to introduce regulation and control. One effect of the Act was to require all vehicles on British roads to be registered and to display registration plates. The first car registrations were issued in 1903, even though the legal requirement for vehicles to display them didn't take effect until 1904.

However, there are some recent exceptions - it is now permissible to keep a license plate after moving to a different city and often, companies, especially rental car companies, have agreements with specific cities or districts to register all their vehicles there, even if they are not normally operating out of that city.
