Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the most popular pet cats in the world, which one of these long-haired cats is named after the former name of an Asian country?

Answer: Persian

Although named after Persia, the old name for Iran, there is some dispute as to whether this cat actually originated in that country or in Western Europe. Persians come in various colors, but all have long dense fur which requires regular grooming.
2. Which cat, with a spotted coat, is the fastest of all domestic cat breeds?

Answer: Egyptian Mau

The Egyptian Mau probably originated from Egypt - ancient wall paintings of the breed exist there. Their longer than usual hind legs enable them to run at speeds of almost 60 km/h.
3. Which cat, that sounds as if it should come from the Far East, was actually first bred in Canada?

Answer: Tonkinese

The Tonkinese is a cross between the Siamese and Burmese breeds. The first one was bred in Canada in the 1960s by Margaret Conroy, who originally called it a "Golden Siamese".
4. Originating in Scandinavia, which breed of cat is often erroneously confused with mixed breed tabbies?

Answer: European shorthair

It may look like a common-and-garden "moggie", but the European shorthair is a real breed of cat that originated in Sweden. This breed can come in a variety of colors, including pure white.
5. Which of the following is the real name of a breed of cat originating from the former Soviet Union?

Answer: Russian Blue

The Russian blue is thought to have originated from the Russian port of Archangel. Sailors from there helped spread the breed throughout Europe. This cat has a distinctive short, silver-blue coat.
6. Which one of these breeds is known as the "Sacred Cat of Burma"?

Answer: Birman

The Birman is thought to have originated in Burma, before being introduced into France. Birman's are born pure white, before developing color points, and could easily be described as looking like a long-haired version of the Siamese cat.
7. Which one of the following is the real name of a cat that takes its name from the former name of an African country?

Answer: Abyssinian

The Abyssinian is named after the former name for Ethiopia, although the breed is actually believed to have originated in nearby Egypt. The Abyssinian has a dense coat, which is normally reddish-brown in color.
None of the other options are the names of real cats, I just made them up.
8. Which breed of cat was developed in the USA and takes its name from its curly coat?

Answer: LaPerm

The LaPerm originated in Oregon in the early 1980s. Its coat is curly, especially around the belly, throat and base of the ears. It can come in any color at all.
9. Which breed of cat was first bred in the English town of Buckfastleigh?

Answer: Devon rex

Buckfastleigh is a town in the county of Devon, and the first Devon rex was born there in the 1960s. As well as being extremely agile, this breed is noted for being among the most intelligent of all cat breeds.
10. If you have correctly answered the first nine questions, then the initial letters of their answers will spell out the name of which hairless Russian cat?

Answer: Peterbald

The Peterbald originated in St Petersburg in 1994. Some of these cats are born hairless, whilst others will gradually lose their fur over time. This breed is known as one of the most affectionate of all cats.
