Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This breed has the same bodily characteristics as a Persian, with shorter hair. It was first developed in the 50s and got its name in 1966. What breed is this?

Answer: Exotic Shorthair

Exotics are described as "people cat", and can even get along with dogs. *gasp* They have a thick undercoat, making them shed a lot. Both Persians and Exotics have small noses, big heads, and have big bones. Persians have evolved over the last century to have longer hair (guard hairs almost four inches long) and have evolved flatter faces.
2. These cats have bobbed tails. The first registered cat of this breed was named Yodi. What's the breed?

Answer: American Bobtail

Some American Bobtails are born with no tail at all. They may have long hair or short hair, in any color pattern. American Bobtails are very healthy, due to the large number of kittens in one litter. (up to 10, wow!) They are low maintenance cats (fur-wise), needing only an occasional brushing.
3. This breed was the model for the statue "Kucinta", placed along a river. True or False: This breed is the Singapura.

Answer: True

"Kucinta" was placed along the Singapore river in Singapore. These cats originated by the crossing of a Burmese with an Abyssinian. They have very big eyes and ears. The only color accepted is light brown with ticked fur. *cute cute cute cute cute* Singapuras can sell for very high prices in the U.S. because of their current rarity.
4. Many cats are bred to look like or have some of the characteristics of other animals. For example, one breed can only have pure black fur. The goal is to look like a black panther. What is the breed of cat?

Answer: Bombay

Bombay cats originated in 1958 when a Burmese and an American Shorthair were crossed. The cat's fur may not be ticked or anything but one solid color. Ticking is when the fur has light bands of color alternating with dark bands. It makes a pretty two-color-at-once effect. Bombay cats have self fur, or fur that is the same shade from root to tip. If you were wondering, Bombay is a city in India.

The cats were named after the city that they originated in.
5. These cats are rather large, weighing up to 20 lbs. in males and being up to 3 feet long. They are bred to be friendly and relax totally at the touch of their owners. What's the breed?

Answer: Ragdoll

A myth about this breed was that they feel no pain. The myth came about when a pregnant Ragdoll gave birth after being run over by a car. It was proven false, but Ragdolls are still very easy-going and tolerant of children. They were developed in the 60s to create a breed that made the ideal house pet. Ragdolls become totally devoted and loyal to their owners.

Another such cat is the RagaMuffin. They have almost all of the same characteristics.
6. This breed almost became extinct, but was saved by efforts from the Ankara Zoo. What breed am I talking about?

Answer: Turkish Angora

In the 1700s, Turkish sultans sent Turkish Angoras to other European rulers as gifts. The breed was first only pure white, but has lately been accepted in other colors. The pure white ones are called by their original name, Ankara Kedi. They usually have one blue eye and one orange. (odd-eyed) It is not uncommon for cats with blue eyes to be deaf on the same side as the blue eye. *Not that they have to be deaf*
7. This breed of cat is named after the dancers of Bali.

Answer: Balinese

This breed is relatively new and is caused by a mating between a Siamese and an Angora. They have the same triangular head as the Siamese but are long-haired. Did you know that a Siamese cat once had 26 toes instead of only 18??? This is called polydactylism. *sounds like a kind of flying dinosaur (pterodactyl)*
8. As legend goes, a dying Buddhist priest was touched by a temple cat. Its paws stayed white, but its back turned golden and the rest turned brown. What breed is this legend referring to?

Answer: Birman

All Birman cats have blue eyes. They all have points like the cat in the legend, typical ones being seal or blue point Birmans. These cats are from Burma, (if you couldn't tell from the name) and made their way to Europe in the early 20th century. Birmans are longhairs, and the white fur on their paws is called gloves.
9. This breed has many of the same characteristics as the Manx, except with longer fur. The name of the breed is similar to the Welsh spelling of "Wales". What is this rare breed called?

Answer: Cymric

Like the Manx, Cymrics have no or little tail. Ones without any tail at all are called "Rumpies". If a Rumpy would mate with another Manx, the other Manx must have a little bit of a tail or their kittens might have spinal problems. A legend says that a group of cats swam ashore after the ship they were on sank.

After mating with tailless cats on the island, they unknowingly set up the Manx breed that we have today.
10. The first registered cats of this breed were born near Coupar Angus, Scotland. Their unusual characteristic is in the ears. What is this breed I'm talking about?

Answer: Scottish Fold

Scottish Folds have ears that...well...fold! The fold doesn't increase lack of hearing or risk of disease. It's just there. The American Curl is just opposite. Their ears bend backwards. The American Curl was established in California. Their ears don't seem to bother them, either.
11. The hair of this breed is so curly that its whiskers are even curled. The first kitten of this breed was born in Verona, New York. What's the breed?

Answer: American Wirehair

The American Wirehair's fur is very bouncy. After a rain, the fur may take several hours to reach the normal level of bounciness.
12. This cat is basically a long-haired Abyssinian. It is named after a country in Africa. What's the breed?

Answer: Somali

Somalis were named after Somalia, a country near Ethiopia. Ethiopia is where Abyssinian cats originated. Somalis were named as they are to show their closeness to actual Abyssinians. (Country, name, connection...?) The originally colored Abyssinians are usually ruddy colored, hence one of my answer choices.
13. These cats originated near Lake Van in Turkey. They are one of the few cat breeds that actually likes to swim. (Gasp, I know.) What breed am I talking about?

Answer: Turkish Van

Turkish Vans always have pink eye rims, which stand out against their light fur. They are usually mostly creamy-white, with a colored tail and colored ears. They have one spot of color above their tail, also. The most common color mixture is auburn and cream.
14. What are cats with no specific breed called?

Answer: Nonpedigree

Nonpedigree cats are the most popular in the USA. They range in color, pattern, eye color, temperament, and everything else you can think of! (within reason) They may be less prestigious, but they still are cats, nonetheless, and we love them.
15. This breed was started in a 1986 Christmas catalog from Neiman-Marcus. They were created by Paul Casey, in an effort to have a leopard-look-alike cat. What breed am I talking about?

Answer: California Spangled

It took Paul Casey 6 generations to make this breed look exactly like he wanted. A lot of persistence, is what I call that. I got the information in my quiz from this book: Alderton, David. "Pockets; Cats." New York: Dorling Kindersley Books, 1995.
