Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What should you keep your betta fish in?

Answer: Small aquarium

Jars, vases and cups are all bad for bettas; go for a small tank instead so the betta has some room to swim around. Bettas which live in jars, cups, vases etc. usually live for only a few months.
2. You might have noticed, after owning them for some time, that most male bettas blow bubbles at the surface. What is their purpose?

Answer: Bubble nest for breeding

Even when females aren't nearby, male bettas start making bubble nests. It doesn't matter when, they just make them. The older males aren't really interested in breeding, so that's why the younger males make bubble nests more often.
3. What should betta pellets be made of?

Answer: All protein

Their upturned mouth is for catching insects in the wild, not for plants. That's why the food should be all protein as in their native habitat.
4. Why do some bettas jump out of their bowls?

Answer: They wanted to get to a bigger space

If the water evaporated in its natural habitat, the betta would be stuck in a small puddle and it would jump out to get to a bigger body of water.
5. What is the common pet betta's scientific name?

Answer: Betta splendens

Betta splendens are the bettas you find in most pet stores. Some other species are a bit more rare find.
6. Where do bettas originally come from?

Answer: Thailand

Bettas originate from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia but they are mainly bred in Thailand.
7. Where do bettas live in the wild?

Answer: Shallow freshwater areas

Rice paddies make a good habitat for bettas as they are miles long and give the bettas enough space.
8. What can improve a betta's life the most? The incorrect answers are unnecessary and/or bad for the fish.

Answer: Regular water changes

Regular water changes are a must. Most first-time keepers only clean their tank once a month or their bowl once every two weeks.

Vet visits are unnecessary for betta fish because if the fish gets sick, you could easily find medication in fish stores.

Bettas must eat up to four pellets a day and skip one day of the week. Overfeeding could kill the fish.
9. Which of these is a real tail type?

Answer: Veil tail: a long tail going upwards then downwards like a veil

The veil tail is the most common betta tail type found in almost all pet stores. The other descriptions are actual types of tail but with incorrect names.
A flower tail is a rose/feathertail.
A queen tail is called a crowntail.
A rabbit tail is made up, but the fastest bettas are the short-finned ones (wild type and plakat).
10. What is a betta sorority?

Answer: An aquarium that houses 5+ female bettas

A sorority is an aquarium that houses at least five female bettas and has at least a 20-gallon capacity. A male could also live in it, but it's not recommended because fights might start.
