Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is a domestic animal native to the Andes mountains?

Answer: Alpaca

Alpacas are small members of the camel family. They have no humps and are similar, but smaller in size, to llamas. Alpacas eat grass. They have adapted to eat rough vegetation and are not particular about food. They are easy to keep, as they need only grass/hay and mineral supplements to thrive.
2. The Pallas's cat is also known as the manul.

Answer: True

The Pallas's cat (named after Peter Pallas in 1776) is also called manul, steppe cat or rock wildcat. It is a small wild cat similar in size to a domestic cat. Its primarily habitat is in Central Asia where deep snow does not accumulate. They are solitary animals and hide in caves and crevice's until they come out to hunt at dusk.
3. The red panda is the only living animal in which of these families?

Answer: Ailuridae

Red pandas live in high-altitude rainy temperate and tropical forests where bamboo is readily available as this consists of over 80% of their diet. The red panda has a "false thumb" like the giant panda, although the two species are not related.
It is also known as a firefox, Himalayan raccoon, cat-bear, bearcat and fox bear!

Mustelidae are carnivorous animals which include badgers, weasels and otters.
4. A silverback gorilla is part of both the mountain and lowland gorilla species.

Answer: True

Gorillas can be divided into two groups - mountain and lowland gorillas. The mountain gorilla is the largest of all primates and can be found at higher elevations and more inland than the lowland gorilla. The lowland gorilla lives in thick rainforests on the Atlantic coast of Africa.

A silverback is an older male, over 13 years of age, that has developed grey/while hair over its back and shoulders as it ages. Only males are silverbacks.
5. One or more of us act as sentries while the rest of the colony naps or forages. Which animals are we?

Answer: Meerkat

Meerkats forage for food near their burrows. Their favorite food is a tasty insect, however meerkats aren't picky, and they'll also eat small mammals, reptiles, worms and roots. Besides watching out for invaders, meerkats also keep an eye out for predators like martial eagles, jackals, and snakes. If they see danger approaching, they'll sound an alarm.
6. What is this strange looking creature?

Answer: Leafy seadragon

The leafy seadragon (Phycodurus eques) is known for its ornate camouflage and leaf-like appendages. These captivating fish are native to the shallow, kelp-covered rocky reefs of temperate southern Australian waters. They use dorsal and pectoral fins for movement and have very few predators.
7. Which is the third largest cat species?

Answer: Jaguar

The jaguar (Panthera onca) closely resembles the leopard; however, unlike the leopard, it has spots in its rosettes which are used for camouflage. The black panther is a jaguar with black pigment all over its body, although, upon closer examination, rosette patterns can still be seen.
8. Which animal is the largest rodent in the world, originating in South America?

Answer: Capybara

The capybara is a rodent, closely related to cavies and guinea pigs. Water is a source of life for the capybara, as they eat water plants and grasses and use the water itself to escape from danger.

It can stay underwater for up to five minutes at a time in order to hide from predators. It uses its webbed feet to swim as well as walk.
9. Which of these animal babies is born completely white?

Answer: Colobus monkey

Colobus monkeys are strict leaf eaters and are classified as Old World monkeys. They are native to Africa. The locals refer to them as "messengers of the gods" due to the time they spend moving between the tree tops and the ground. They do not possess opposable thumbs like all other primates, but do not need them as much living in the tree tops.
10. Which of these is a critically endangered big cat? It has a pale colored coat which helps it hide in snowy conditions.

Answer: Amur leopard

The Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is the most endangered leopard species in the world due to a loss of habitat. Less than 80 of these proud animals exist in the wild. They can be found on the Russia/China border and are well suited to the harsh terrain due to their thick fur which protects them from the cold. Their diet includes deer, wild boar, small mammals and birds.
