Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With does 'DA' stand for, as related to the dairy industry?

Answer: Displaced Abomasum

Being the third stomach on a cow, the abomasum is prone to becoming
'twisted' causing the cow's digestive system to be blocked. Thus the
cow stops eating. This usually occurs after a difficult calving-usually
with twins. Surgery is most common for correcting a 'DA', however some
vets do 'roll' a cow so that the abomasum will simply untwist on its
own!
2. Which of the following things do milk companies not test for?

Answer: Calcium

While most of the money in the dairy industry is made by the amount of
milk a herd is producing, bonuses are given by most milk companies for
outstanding amounts of protein or butterfat.
3. What is a freemartin?

Answer: A heifer who is a twin to a bull and can't reproduce

While most heifers who are twins to bulls are freemartins, there are
some cases where their reproductive systems do mature and they live
a normal life.
4. All cows have four teats.

Answer: False

While most dairy cattle do have four teats, a large number have five
or six. These teats are usually incapable of producing any milk and are
commonly removed at a young age.
5. How old is the average cow when she has a calf and begins milking?

Answer: 2 years old

All cows must calve before they begin milking. This usually begins
around the age of two, meaning they need to be inseminated at the age of around fourteen months.
6. What does 'UDIA' stand for as related to the dairy industry in the US?

Answer: United Dairy Industry Association

This association coordinates the promotional, research, and educational
activities of a number of smaller dairy organisations.
7. Which of the following is a major sign that that cow has mastitis?

Answer: She has a high somatic cell count

Somatic cells are found in nearly every dairy animal. While they are
controlled, they are OK, but if a cow's 'cell count' becomes terribly
high the chances that she will get mastitis are very high!
8. While at the milk company, the milk is pasteurized and _______. This is done by forcing milk through tiny screens under pressure to divide particles of fat.

Answer: Homogenized

The particles are then small enough that they will remain suspended
and not rise to the top of the vat of milk as they would have done
prior to homogenization.
9. Which of these major breeds of dairy cattle produces the most milk overall and is also the most common in the US?

Answer: Holsteins

Holsteins are the tallest of the major dairy breeds in the US, however
they are usually very aggressive. Because of this some farmers don't
see their worth.
10. Which of these is not a type of 'room' for a cow?

Answer: pipe stall

Interesting names we farmers have for things! But it all makes sense
when you think about it. Stanchions are stalls too small for cows to
lay down in comfortably; they are only used while the cow is being
milked. Box stalls are rectangular pens where the cow has plenty of
room to lay down and just relax. Herringbone free stalls are
free stalls-meaning they aren't tied up, they can roam freely-divided by herringbone pipe. And Pipe
stall? I just made that up!
