Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What animal has the highest blood pressure known to exist in any mammal?

Answer: giraffe

On average its blood pressure when prone is 280 over 180. This is more than twice that of the average person. The reason is that the giraffe's heart has to pump blood up its long neck to its brain.
2. How many pairs of nipples does a dog have?

Answer: 5

They have a total of ten, but 5 pairs.
3. On average, how many times a year does a wild rabbit have babies in North America?

Answer: 1-3

In the wild, rabbits only breed just a few times. They do not have babies throughout the cold and winter months. Early spring and part of the summer are when the babies are born. Like dogs and cats they too have to go into 'heat'. However domestic rabbits can have babies about every month or so throughout the whole year.
4. In the Old Testament, which two animals spoke to humans?

Answer: snake and donkey

The snake in the Garden of Eden and Balaam's donkey.
5. What is the meaning of the Welsh phrase pen gwyn, which gave us the word penguin?

Answer: white head

When they molt, their heads turn a snow white. They have been described as looking as if they were wearing caps.
6. In Australia, the dingo is the native dog.

Answer: False

The dingo is what their wild dogs are called, but however they are not native to that country, which by definition makes them an introduced species, not a native one.
7. How many times a minute does a large whale's heart beat when it is at rest?

Answer: 9

Generally the larger the animal, the slower its heartbeat.
8. How large an area in square miles does a polar bear range in its search for food?

Answer: 20,000

Polar bears are the world's largest land carnivore. Black bears cover about 42 square miles and grizzlies about 500 to 850 square miles. I don't know about you, but thats a lot of walking.
9. What is the heaviest part of most birds?

Answer: chest

This is because of the built up muscles to flap their wings.
10. What animal was used to predict the end of winter before the groundhog was given the job?

Answer: badger

The German farmers who migrated to Pennsylvania switched to the groundhog because there was an abundance of them in the new country, but not that many badgers.
