Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Once the pride has gathered, who will eat first after a lioness makes a kill?

Answer: males

The males will eat first, the females will eat second, and the cubs will eat last, if there's anything left. Even if a lion did not help make the kill, they will still feed on it. The female will feast on the carcass until the males arrive to take their fill, but as soon as the males arrive, she moves aside for them.
2. Every few years, the males in a pride will willingly leave to form a new pride, and make room for new males to take over the existing pride.

Answer: False

Every few years, new males will come along and challenge the existing males in a pride. If the new males win the fight, they win the pride!
3. When new males take over a pride, who will they try to kill?

Answer: all cubs that were conceived by the previous males

When the cubs are killed, the lionesses will go into heat sooner. Also, the new males want to get rid of any existence of the previous males.
4. When young males are kicked out of a pride, they join up with other young males that were kicked out of their pride and form which of these?

Answer: coalition

When these young males join up and form coalitions, they will find a pride and challenge the existing males to take over the pride.
5. What is the name of the hybrid cat that will be conceived when a male lion mates with a female tiger?

Although very rare, when a male lion mates with a female tiger, the animal is called a liger. This doesn't happen in the wild, but only when animals are captive.

Answer: tigon
