Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. So I'm wandering around a pet store and I see a white-and-orange python with pink eyes. What would this python be characterized as?

Answer: Albinistic

An albino is something with yellow or white skin, feathers, fur, etc. and pink eyes. Leucism is a condition that is like albinism, but the creature has blue or black eyes instead of pink. An animal which has melanism is the opposite of an albino- the animal has an abnormal amount of pigments in its fur, feathers, etc. and is therefore black.
2. After wandering around the pet store for a while I decide to go to the zoo. There I see a black panther- and how pretty it is, too! What is the characteristic of this animal?

Answer: Melanism

The black panther is not a panther at all, but a melanistic form of a leopard. Axanthic is a term to describe something with no yellow pigment at all.
3. After looking at big cats I wander over to the reptile house. There I see a snake which is white and yellow with black eyes. Is this just an ordinary corn snake or is it albinistic? Or is it neither?

Answer: Neither

A corn snake is orange and darker orange with a mottled yellow-and orange underbelly. This snake would be leucistic.
4. Somebody is showing an animal somewhere near the skink so I start to listen. The person explains that the animal is schizochromatic. What does this term mean?

Answer: An absence of at least one normally occurring color

Schizochromatic (what a mouthful!) is a term meaning that an animal does not have a color that it normally would have.
5. The person talking shows another animal and says it is xanthochromatic. What does that mean?

Answer: That it has more yellow pigment than is normally found in the species

If a creature is xanthochromatic then it had more yellow in it than normal.
6. What is a chromatophore?

Answer: A pigment cell

A chromatophore is a pigment cell. All of these animal characteristics are caused by an abnormal amount or color of chromatophores.
7. I stop by a bookstore on my way home and look at a book which describes what an animal with albinism would look like. What coloring would it be?

Answer: Very pale or white

Albinism is caused by a lack of melanin, Albino animals can occur is many species, not just mammals, but the lack of pigmentation makes life difficult and survival in the wild is difficult.
8. What, exactly, is melanism?

Answer: An increase in darker pigments

Melanism is an increase in darker pigments, thus giving you an animal which is either black or dark brown.
9. There is a picture in the book of a pale yellow snake with no white on its body. Would this be considered a true albino?

Answer: Only if the snake had pink eyes

If a snake is yellow with pink eyes it is considered an albino.
10. After a long day of gawking over strangely colored animals I return home to feed my cat- who is supposed to be a tabby, but is completely white with blue eyes! What is this called?

Answer: Leucism

As a matter of fact, cats that are completely white with blue eyes are more likely to be deaf than a normally-colored cat.
