Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You arrive at work, change into your scrubs and begin your rounds. You get to Corral 2 and notice a spot of blood on the floor. All the chimps seem OK, so what is the most likely cause for the blood?

Answer: menses

Fighting could be a cause, but if chimps draw enough blood to leave on the floor, there will be an obvious sign of struggle. Menses (the "period" of the female) is the most common cause for blood to be found with captive chimpanzees, and the cycle is approximately 35 days.
2. You continue your rounds having duly noted the blood. Suddenly you hear a commotion coming from Corral 4. You enter to see Kudzu (a low-ranking male) extending a hand to Tony (the Alpha male). If Tony accepts Kudzu's submission, what will he do?

Answer: place Kudzu's hand in his mouth, but not bite down

Dominant chimps will take the hand and place it in their mouth without biting down to acknowledge the submission and reiterate their dominance. Bared teeth is a form of submission, and therefore would not come from an Alpha male. Slapping is of course aggressive.
3. You decide to be nice to the next corral and bring in graham crackers as a treat. However, Beta (a low-ranking female) is acting out by tossing feces. How should you respond?

Answer: firmly say "no" and leave the corral

When the chimps see that you are leaving with your treat in hand, the group will be unhappy with the offender. Over time, the group will train the behavior out of the misbehaving chimp (usually). Throwing feces back and turning the water hose on them will only rile the group up and cause even more bad behavior.
4. You enter the next corral and notice a male sitting near the cage front. As you approach, he flings his hand in your direction. What does this most likely mean?

Answer: go away

Chimps will flip their hand dismissively towards you to let you know they are not feeling sociable.
5. In general, how much stronger than a human is an average male chimpanzee?

Answer: 8 times

Chimps are approximately 8 times stronger than humans. They are also a lot bigger than people think. Cheetah, on "Tarzan'" was a juvenile chimp. An adult male chimp is nearly 4 feet tall, and can weigh as much as 200lbs, although the average weight is 120lbs.
6. You've finished your rounds in the chimp area and are headed for the Rhesus macaques. What is another name for these animals?

Answer: Rhesus monkey

The Rh factor in human blood was discovered first in Rhesus monkeys, thus the term "Rh factor".
7. Uh-oh, you get to a den and see some blood on the floor. A quick look at the animals reveals a female with some blood near her tail. What probably is going on?

Answer: tail wounding

Rhesus monkeys are prone to tail wounds which tend to bleed a lot. Menses usually are not visible on a specific monkey. Hernias and prolapses usually do not leave blood on the floor.
8. Are rhesus macaques old world monkeys?

Answer: Yes

Old world monkeys are from Africa and Asia. New world monkeys are from South America.
9. You find a note from the vet asking you to give an animal an injection IM of Baytril. What is Baytril and what does IM mean?

Answer: an anti-biotic given intramuscularly

Baytril is the anti-biotic we use most for wounds and infections. It is given into the muscle, as this is the easiest and fastest way to give an injection to a fully conscious animal.
10. You are finishing your rounds when you notice some fighting among one of the rhesus colonies. No major injuries have occurred, so what is the best method to prevent further fighting?

Answer: place a net against the cage wall

A net simulates a natural predator, and the group will be more concerned with avoiding it than with petty squabbles within the group. Separating out any animals will eventually lead to more fighting.
