Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mom's just given birth and the baby is safe and sound. Which of these bundles of herbivorous joy can look forward to another 60 years on earth?

Answer: Asian elephant

Asian elephants can live up to 60 years, so this new baby can look forward to a long life (much longer than a seal, toad, or python at least!). Elephant pregnancies last just under 22 months, making theirs the longest pregnancies of all mammals. Female elephants usually have one calf every two or three years.

In the wild, they live in herds with other females and all of their calves. The adult males live by themselves.
2. The eggs have hatched in the reptile house. How long can an eastern coral snake expect to live in captivity?

Answer: Seven years

Eastern coral snakes are seven inches long when they hatch out of their eggs, but they will grow to two feet in total. When they hatch, they are fully venomous, too. Eastern coral snakes are found in the USA, where they are the only venomous snakes that lay eggs.
3. After eight months of waiting, there are two new cubs at the zoo. They can expect to live for 25-30 years. Which species are they?

Answer: Polar bear

Polar bears usually give birth to two cubs at a time, though one, three, or four cubs are possible, too. Pregnant females make dens before the cubs are born. They normally dig a tunnel and a small chamber into a snowdrift. The snow acts as insulation, and the bear's body heat keeps the den warmer than the outside temperature.
4. The nest is full in the aviary! Which bird has a 20 year lifespan?

Answer: Toco toucan

Toucans are known for their huge beaks, which are almost as long as their body. The beaks are used during courtship: not only is a large bill more desirable, but males and females toss fruit to each other during courtship. The happy couple will make their nest in a hole in a tree. Both the male and female look after the two to four eggs they have each year.

A spring peeper (what a great name!) is an amphibian, not a bird.
5. The baby mountain gorilla will be between four and six feet tall when she is fully grown. How long will she live for?

Answer: 35 years

Mountain gorillas live for around 35 years in the wild. They live in troops of thirty, which are led by an older dominant male. A gorilla pregnancy will last nine months, and will usually result in one baby. Baby gorillas ride on their mother's backs until they are two or three years old.
6. A baby box jellyfish will grow to three metres long. How long will it live for at most?

Answer: one year

Box jellyfish have up to fifteen tentacles, each with roughly 5,000 cells that sting. You wouldn't want to get tangled up in those tentacles: the box jellyfish has an incredibly deadly venom.

These jellyfish don't normally live longer than a year. They start out as a sperm in the male jellyfish. The male releases its sperm into the sea, where a passing female will swallow it. The eggs inside the female will be fertilised, and then released into the sea.
7. The tadpoles have arrived and they're clinging to their mother's back. These paperclip-sized amphibians can live between three and fifteen years in the wild. What are they?

Answer: Poison dart frogs

Poison dart frogs carry their eggs and tadpoles on their backs in order to move them around. Sometimes, the females lay extra eggs that the tadpoles can eat.

Poison dart frogs are a group of over 100 frogs from the Dendrobatidae family. Their bodies are brightly coloured and, despite their name, not all of them are poisonous. The name comes from a South American tribe that used the poison on their blowdarts.
8. Look at the tiny Atlantic puffins! How cute! What is the average lifespan of an Atlantic puffin?

Answer: twenty years

Atlantic puffins spend most of their twenty years at sea. They go back to land in spring and summer for the breeding season. They build their nests out of feathers or grass high up on cliff tops. Females usually lay one egg at time. Both parents take turns to incubate the egg, and then take turns to feed the chick when they have hatched.
9. The tarantula eggs and sperm have been sealed up in a cocoon and over 500 baby tarantulas will soon hatch out. Approximately how long could they live for?

Answer: Thirty years

Male tarantulas spin a web and then cover it in sperm. A female will lay eggs on the web and wrap them all up in a cocoon (and possibly eat the male!). After six to nine weeks of waiting and guarding, up to 1000 tiny tarantulas will emerge from the cocoon. They could all live for around thirty years, as long as they don't get eaten by their mate.

There are around 800 known species of tarantula. One of them - bumba lennoni - is named after musician John Lennon.
10. There are lots of tiny orange fish swimming around in the aquarium now. After a week of waiting, the eggs have hatched and the newborns - all of which are male - can look forward to another six to twelve years in their tank. Which kind of fish have hatched?

Answer: Clownfish

All clownfish are born male. The fish live in groups with a breeding pair and up to four nonbreeders. If the breeding female dies, the breeding male will irreversibly change sex to become the breeding female. The largest nonbreeding male will then become the breeding male, and the other nonbreeders will move up the hierarchy, too. Females can lay up to 1,500 eggs at a time.

It's a lot of work for the breeding pair to keep the nest clean!
