Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Meet Badgie. He is a young badger who doesn't quite understand what to do with his short legs. Whatever should he use them for?

Answer: digging

The short legs of badgers are designed to be used in digging. Badgers get most of their food underground so this is very important as it alows them to tunnel quickly after underground rodents.
2. "Badger! Badger!" says Badgie crossly. "I'm lost and hungry. Mama Badger is no where to be seen. If I'm to find her I'll have to scent her out". Where is the location of the gland from which a badger's scent is secreted?

Answer: under its tail

The scent glands of badgers allow them to produce an unpleasant smell through their anal glands at times when they are threatened or need to warn each other. The gland under the badger's tail exudes a musky smell that is used for scent marking and communicating with each other.
3. Soon Badgie meets an animal who he mistakes for a cousin. He tries to make friends but this animal runs off feeling badgered since he is not a member of Badgie's family. Which animal is not a member of the badger's family?

Answer: hamster

The hamster is from the family of rodents. Hamsters are closely related to rats. Otters, polecats, wolverines and badgers are all members of the mustelidae family.
4. Suddenly, Badgie sees a really small badger. He thinks it is a dwarf. He tries to make fun of him but the badger runs away. "I won't be teased because I'm the smallest type of badger," he protested. Which type of badger is the smallest?

Answer: ferret badger

The European badger is considered to be one of the biggest badgers. Other types of badgers such as the American badger, the hog badger and the honey badger are all larger than the ferret badger.
5. As Badgie strolls merrily along he sees Badge the baby badger out with his mama. Feeling very grown-up he wonders what name humans would give to a baby badger. What is a baby badger called?

Answer: cub

A calf can be a baby cow, giraffe or elephant. Other animals have young that are called calf too. Baby sharks are called pups and baby kangaroos are joeys.
6. As Badgie wanders around deep in contemplation he hears a sound which seems to signal danger. Could a predator be nearby? Which of these animals is known to prey on badgers?

Answer: coyotes

Any carnivore that is bigger than a badger is capable of eating it. However, badgers are fierce animals that will not hesitate to protect themselves and their young. They are capable of warding off animals which are much larger than themselves.
7. Badgie hears noises. It's his mother, Badgina searching for him. Badgie wants to continue his adventure so he quickly hides himself. "What is the name for a female badger?" he wonders. Can you tell?

Answer: sow

A pig of any gender may be called hog or swine. The doe is a female deer.
8. Alas! The badgers are being hunted by men with little dogs. Badgie is terrified. Now he wants to be with his mother, Badgina and his big, strong daddy, Badger-Me-Not but all he can see are the hunters and their dogs. Can you name the dogs that have been used to hunt the badgers?

Answer: dachshunds

The dachshunds are tiny sausage shaped dogs that were bred in Germany to be used in hunting badgers. In fact the word dachshund means 'badger dog' in German. In 1835 the United Kingdom passed laws to stop the sport of badger-baiting under the Cruelty to Animals Act.
9. As Badgie hides from the dogs he sees a terrifying sight. It is his father Badger-Me-Not. He has been badgered and caught. The hunters are celebrating that he is a big, heavy male. What is a male badger called?

Answer: boar

Wild pigs are also known as boars. A buck is a male deer or antelope. A steer is a male bovine animal that was castrated before it was sexually mature.
10. Badgie is disconsolate. His big, strong pa has been badgered to death. He finds Badgina who gives him what comfort she can. Together they slink home wondering what the humans will make of Badger-Me-Not's splendid pelt. What will be made from his pelt?

Answer: shaving brushes

Pelt from badgers is very good for making shaving brushes because it is water retentive. It can also be used to make clothes.
