Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How do female Siberian tigers signal their readiness to breed?

Answer: by leaving scent marks

Females signal that they are ready to mate by leaving scent marks and scratches on trees. A breeding pair may stay together for up to a week, however, the female will raise her cubs alone.
2. At what age do male Bengal tigers reach sexual maturity?

Answer: five years

Males reach sexual maturity at around five years of age while females are able to breed at around four years.
3. Once a suitable partner has been found, tigers will engage in the act of mating several times over a short time-frame. Why?

Answer: it increases the female's chance of having cubs

Females are only receptive for between three and six days, so engaging in the act of mating several times over a short time-frame increases the female's chance of having cubs.
4. Newborn Bengal tiger cubs weigh less than five hundred grams (around one pound).

Answer: False

Newborn Bengal cubs weigh between 780 and 1,600 grams. When fully grown, males can weigh up to 300 kilograms while females can reach a weight of around 170 kilograms.
5. Siberian tigers only breed in summer.

Answer: False

Siberian tigers breed at any time of the year. The average litter size is between two and four cubs.
6. An allele gene can cause a small number of birth defects in tigers. These genes can also sometimes change colouration, resulting in cubs being born with what colour fur?

Answer: white

It's unlikely that you'd ever find a white tiger living in the wild. However, they're frequently bred in captivity, though there's a greater chance of birth defects including cleft palate and scoliosis.
7. Between the ages of eighteen and twenty-eight months, what do Indochinese tiger cubs start doing?

Answer: leaving their mothers

This is the time when the cubs will start leaving their mothers. They will seek out their own places to live and begin hunting independently.
8. Male tigers will kill cubs that aren't related to them.

Answer: True

Once a female has had cubs, she won't be able to breed again until her cubs no longer depend on her for food and protection. In the same way as lions, male tigers will kill any cubs that aren't related to them. This way, they'll be able to mate with the females and produce their own cubs.
9. How long is the gestation period of the Siberian tiger?

Answer: three months

The cubs are born in a den. After three to four months, they leave their sheltered birthplace and start exploring the big wide world. Their mother will spend the next two to three years teaching them important survival skills before they finally venture out alone.
10. Although the average litter size for an Indochinese tiger is three, how many cubs are the females capable of giving birth to?

Answer: seven

During the first year of life, there's a 35% mortality rate which is usually the result of floods, fire or cubs being killed by unrelated adult males.
