Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What AKC group does the Brittany belong to?

Answer: Sporting Group

2. The Brittany's hunting style most resembles which other breed of dog's hunting style?

Answer: German Shorthaired Pointer (versatile hunting dog)

The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association holds hunt tests for Versatile Hunting dogs, as does the AKC. There are only six breeds of dog recognized by the AKC who are VH: the Brittany, the German Shorthaired Pointer, the German Wirehaired Pointer, the Vizsla, the Weimaraner, and the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. Versatile Hunting dogs are dogs that have been bred and trained to hunt and point game, retrieve game in land and water, and to track wounded game in land and water.
3. Which color is NOT acceptable in the American show ring?

Answer: Black and White

The orange and white and the liver and white colors are preferred. The tri-color, which is liver and white with orange, is acceptable but not preferred. The black or white Brittany is a disqualification in both American and Canadian shows.
4. What is the Brittany's country of origin?

Answer: France

The Brittany comes from the Brittany region of France.
5. Which would NOT disqualify a Brittany from the American show ring?

Answer: Dewclaws removed

6. This is very important to the founders, breeders, and owners of the Brittany. There are probably more of these in the Brittany than any other breed. . .

Answer: Dual Champions

The Brittany is, above all, a versatile dog. Some breeds, such as the English Setter or the Cocker Spaniel, have such a large difference between the show dogs and the field dogs that you would hardly recognize them as the same breeds at all. But the Brittany breeders have preserved the hunting instincts with the beauty of the show ring champions.

A dual champion is a dog who is both a bench champion (beauty contest) and a field champion (hunting contest).
7. When was 'spaniel' dropped from the "Brittany Spaniel"?

Answer: 1982

When the Brittany was accepted by the AKC in 1944, the American Brittany Club wanted it recognized as just the "Brittany" not the "Brittany Spaniel," but the AKC recognized it as the "Brittany Spaniel." When it had become obvious that the Brittany worked not like a spaniel, but a versatile hunting dog, the name was changed to "Brittany" in 1982.
8. This famous Brittany was born in 1966 and won three National Championships. He was the first Britt to sire over 100 field winners. His offspring included many dual champions. He is in both the American Brittany Club Hall of Fame and the AKC's Museum of the Dog Hall of Fame.

Answer: Dual CH/AFC Ban-Dee

Dual CH is dual champion: bench and field champion. AFC is American Field Champion. CDX is Companion Dog Excellent. TD is Tracking Dog.
9. Why was the Brittany first created?

Answer: Local caretenders of the English dogs bred setters and spaniels to make a dog superior to either

Wealthy English hunters went to France to hunt, along with their champion setters and spaniels. Often they would leave them behind with the locals until next hunting season. The caretakers developed the Brittany out of these dogs.
10. How active is a Brittany?

Answer: Quite active as they are bred to be hunting dogs

Brittanies need a good walk every day to dispel the energy building up inside them. Walk a Brittany at heel. If you let it lead, it will assume it is the leader of the pack. The enjoy being mentally and physically active, they are eager to please, and revel in being owned by someone active, calm, confident and firm.
