Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When a seller includes the term "w.t.c." in an ad, this denotes that the horse:

Answer: is able to walk, trot and canter responding to cues from the rider

"w.t.c" does in fact mean "Walk Trot Canter," and is often written "w/t/c" or "WTC" as well. When buying a horse, this term often denotes that the horse is able to respond to cues for the three gaits but may not necessarily be completely trained. A horse advertised with "w.t.c" may still be green; caution should be taken to clarify the horse's level of training.
2. The term "UTD" refers to the vaccination status of a horse.

Answer: True

UTD means "up to date," and is used in context with a horse's vaccination program. A horse who is advertised as "UTD on all vaccines" is a horse who is current on all applicable vaccines. It can also be used pertaining to worming.

*Different countries and regions have different regulations pertaining to vaccines required for horses - a horse that is up to date in one place may be missing a vaccination that is required in a different region.
3. The terms "QH, TB, POA" refer to individual horse breeds.

Answer: True

These three abbreviations stand for Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, and Pony of the Americas.
4. A "HUS" is what type of horse?

Answer: a hunter

A "HUS" is a Hunter Under Saddle, a class which centers around a horse's movement and way of going as well as their conformation. Obedience is also important and so are manners, but less so than in a hunter pleasure class. These horses should be obedient and a pleasure to ride, but should also conform to the "type" of a hunter under saddle: a correct, balanced Thoroughbred or Warmblood for example. The hunter under saddle should be well trained and responsive, and able to be ridden on a light contact.
5. A horse advertised as "green" will be what type of horse?

Answer: A horse who has some training but is still inexperienced

A "green" horse is a horse that is relatively inexperienced in terms of being ridden. To some people, a "green" horse may be a horse who has learned the basic aids. To higher level riders and/or competitive riders a "green" horse may be a horse that has not had much experience in competition or even in a particular discipline, although it is otherwise a fully-trained horse.
6. The advertising term "HYPP N/N" is usually found in what breed of horse?

Answer: Quarter Horse

HYPP is an abbreviation of Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis. It is a genetic disease associated with the bloodlines descended from Impressive, a Quarter Horse stud. Some breeders have been irresponsible by breeding without taking into account the HYPP status of a horse, and the problem spread.

A horse listed as H/H has two genes for the disease - one inherited from each parent. N/H is one HYPP gene and one normal gene. N/N indicates two normal genes, and the N/N horse cannot pass on the HYPP gene.

HYPP is characterized by random bouts of muscle tremors (shaking and trembling), weakness and/or collapse. Occasionally, during a severe attack, a horse may suddenly die due to heart failure and/or paralysis. The disease is sometimes mistaken for other problems such as colic or "tying up" syndrome, but is completely different.
7. The term "Double Reg'd" means what?

Answer: the horse is registered with two breed associations

"Double Reg'd" does in fact mean that the horse is registered with two breed associations.
Ex: a palomino Quarter Horse that meets the conformational and color requirements of the PHA (Palomino Horse Association) and the regulations of the AQHA may be registered with both associations.
8. A stud horse is advertised with a stud fee of $___ "PB." The term "PB" means what?

Answer: Plus Booking

"PB", or plus booking refers to the fact that you pay the stud fee for breeding plus a booking fee. The booking fee is a deposit used so the owner can be assured that a person intends to follow through with their scheduled breeding. Otherwise they could end up with no customer and no time to book in another client.
9. A horse that is advertised as "in utero" is in foal at the time of selling.

Answer: False

Actually, an "in utero" horse is a horse that is not yet born. You can often pick the sire and dam to create a "custom" horse, but it can be pricey. You can also buy a foal that has already been bred but is not yet born.
10. A horse that "loads, clips, and ties" has a minor problem in movement caused by a conformational defect. He may hit a hind toe against a front pastern, for example.

Answer: False

A horse that "loads, clips, and ties" is a horse that will load onto a trailer, put up with being clipped, and stand still on cross ties.
