Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is an acceptable topic for a quiz in the Animals category?

Answer: Dog training

This category is for quizzes about real, live animals. Cooking quizzes go to Hobbies; fictitious animal stories belong in Literature (if adult books) or For Children (if on children's stories); "Lassie" quizzes belong in Television; and 'Cats' quizzes belong in Humanities.
2. Which of these is an acceptable question on an Animals quiz?

Answer: What breed of dog is nicknamed "The Grey Ghost"?

Personal questions, personal opinion questions, and overly simple questions are not appropriate for this category.
3. When researching your quiz, verifying your information on one web site is always sufficient.

Answer: No

Please verify your information with several reputable sources! There are many inaccuracies on websites. I get quizzes all the time with inaccurate answers- the authors often say, "But I found it on a website!"
4. You are doing a quiz on the San Diego Zoo. You write, "I found all of the material on this quiz at the San Diego Zoo website, www.sandiegozoo.org" in your quiz intro. In your interesting info, you then copy and paste material you found on the website. Is this OK?

Answer: No

It's plagiarism, and we can't allow it. Think of it as stealing someone else's work and passing it off as your own. You need to rewrite the information you have found in your own words. Just changing a couple of words doesn't work either. You need to be original.
5. In which of these categories or subcategories should you save a quiz on pet rats?

Answer: Animals/Other Domestic Animals/Pet Rodents

Make sure that you save your quiz to the most appropriate and specific subcategory. If you're not sure you can always send a message to an editor to ask for advice.
6. Should you deliberately try and write your Animals quiz to be as difficult as possible?

Answer: No

Quizzes will not be played if they are too difficult, thus no one will see all of your hard work. Write your quiz to be as interesting as possible, not as difficult as possible!
7. An acceptable way to make a difficult quiz on snakes is to write a quiz where all of the answers are fill-in-the-blanks with the scientific names of the snakes.

Answer: No

Players hate quizzes like this! You get no brownie points for writing an impossible quiz. In addition, scientific names are often disputed and often change.
8. When you are writing a quiz about a specific animal, it's good to ask questions on how tall it is, what it weighs, and other such numerical data.

Answer: No

Players find such questions really boring, and sources will usually disagree wildly about how tall a zebra is at the shoulder and how much an adult Newfoundland weighs! Instead, write questions about the interesting habits or history of the animal.
9. When writing a quiz, authors need to follow all the same rules of English grammar and spelling that they would in writing a school paper.

Answer: Yes

The biggest cause of quiz rejection is spelling and grammar errors. Don't use slang words, for example. Remember players come from many different countries and some will not have English as their first language, so use the proper names which everyone will understand.
10. It's OK if your Animals quiz has mostly questions in it that are already on other quizzes.

Answer: No

We want to see originality here. When you are planning your quiz, play the other quizzes in the same category, to see which questions have already been asked. While questions on the same theme can't always be avoided, look for a different way of asking the question.
