Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The aardvark is native to which continent?

Answer: Africa

The name "aardvark" originated from an obsolete form of Afrikaans and translates to "earth pig". The aardvark, which is sometimes referred to as ant bear, feeds almost exclusively on termites and ants.
2. Which of the following are the two recognized suborders of bats?

Answer: megabats and microbats

Microbats use echolocation and usually eat insects; a few of this suborder prefer fish, frogs, small mammals, or blood. Megabats possess good visual acuity and normally consume fruits, nectar, and pollen.
3. What animal is the black-footed ferret's main prey?

Answer: prairie dog

The black-footed ferret is also referred to as the prairie dog hunter or American polecat. It was listed as an extinct species in 1979; however a small population was found in 1981. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established a successful captive breeding program and the species' rate of recovery has been faster than other listed endangered species.
4. The coyote's scientific name, Canis latrans, means what?

Answer: barking dog

The coyote has also been called the American jackal or the prairie wolf. They were once considered diurnal animals, but have converted to nocturnal behavior due to human influence and interference.
5. Which of the following is considered the most massive of the flying squirrel species?

Answer: Woolly flying squirrel

The woolly flying squirrel is native to Pakistan and is considered an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Its average size is over three feet in length.
6. Hedgehogs are native to which of the following continents?

Answer: Europe, Asia, and Africa

Hedgehogs are naturally found in Europe, Asia, Africa, and (by introduction) New Zealand. None of the hedgehog species are native to Australia or the Americas.
7. The Virginia opossum is classified as which type of mammal?

Answer: Marsupial

The Virginia opossum is the only known marsupial in North America. Montremes are egg-laying mammals. Placentals are "true beast" mammals. Squamata is a reptile classification.
8. The pangolin is covered with what?

Answer: scales

A pangolin is the only mammal with large scales of keratin, and is referred to as the scaly anteater. It is native to tropical regions throughout Africa and Asia.
9. Do raccoons have whiskers on their snout and above their claws?

Answer: Yes

The raccoon's sense of touch is highly developed. They possess extra vibrissae, or whiskers, positioned above their front paws' claws.
10. Is the spectacled bear an obligate carnivore?

Answer: No

Obligate carnivores need a meat diet because their digestive tract can't assimilate vegetable material effectively. Spectacled bears are primarily herbivorous and only a very small percentage of their diet is animal flesh. The spectacled bear is native to South America.
