Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is considered to be an internal parasite?

Answer: nasal bot

The bot fly crawls up the sheep's nose and deposits eggs which develop for about 8-10 months in the sheep's sinuses. The larvae cause the sheep a great deal of discomfort until they crawl out or are finally sneezed out by their host.
2. How many legs does a Pacific Coast Tick have?

Answer: 8

Ticks are mature external parasites that are often easily hidden in dense fleece.
3. What type of internal parasite lives in a sheep's intestines and constantly "passes" segments of itself via the sheep's feces?

Answer: tapeworm

While tapeworms rarely cause death, they often stunt the growth of new lambs and debilitate older sheep.
4. What is something that would NOT help you to get rid of a lice infestation in your flock?

Answer: combing out the lice eggs

A lice infestation can greatly devalue a sheep's fleece and is very difficult to deal with in general. If your sheep seem to be doing more than a little casual rubbing on trees or barn corners- take a close look for these almost transparent yellow creatures- FAST! The quicker you attack an infestation the easier it will be to rid your flock of them.
5. Liver flukes are an internal parasite that requires the help of another creature in order to multiply outside the sheep's body before reinfesting the sheep. Name the helpful creature.

Answer: snail

Once fluke eggs are passed through the sheep's feces, they hatch and penetrate snails where they multiply and mature. Seems like everyone's trying to hop on, or should I say, IN to the sheep "gravy train".
6. The barberpole worm is one parasite in particular that has a life cycle that is defined as "direct". The definition of a "direct" life cycle is one that:

Answer: doesn't require any other animals to be completed

Once barberpole worm eggs are passed via the sheep's feces they hatch and develop in a period of time (5 days to several months) that depends a lot on the weather. Moist, warm conditions are favorable for eggs/larvae- this is probably one reason that this type of parasite is less of a problem in arid areas of the country.
7. A very high number of internal parasites can lead to death in sheep. Infected animals might display an obvious symptom called_______________ shortly before death.

Answer: bottle jaw

The effect of "bottle jaw" is created by fluids accumulating in the animal as a result of internal blood loss; most commonly a voracious blood sucker named "Haemonchus contortus". Unfortunately, once animals display bottle jaw it is usually too late to save them.
8. Sometimes products that are used to decrease the internal parasitic burdens of your sheep are ineffective. Which of the following would NOT be a likely reason why they are ineffective?

Answer: the sheep are too old for the drugs to be effective

There are three chemical groups of anthelmintics currently available for US sheep farmers. Parasite resistance has been noted in all three. While it is important to properly dose your sheep (underdosing often leaves the "toughest" parasites to repopulate- strongest of the fittest!) it is even more important to rotate use of different dewormers so that parasitic resistance is less likely to occur.
9. Sometimes adult flies lay eggs on the wool and in the tissues of a sheep's wounds due to: accidents, docking, shearing, etc. Once the eggs hatch they burrow into the sheep causing this disgusting and painful ailment:

Answer: fly strike

Once the fly eggs begin to hatch under the skin, the sheep's immune system tries to fight them off and the sheep's internal temperature rises considerably. This fever in conjunction with increased heart and breathing rate often leads to death.
10. Name the eight-legged creature that burrows into a sheep's skin causing severe irritation and itching and damage to sheep's wool, skin, and hair.

Answer: mange mite

Most mange mites are so tiny that they cannot be seen by the naked eye. The damage they inflict can be viewed as wool and hair loss but it takes a visit from the vet for skin scrapings to be viewed under a microscope to accurately determine what type of mites are present.
