Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the relationship between sheep and rams? Hint: think stallion.

Answer: Rams are uncastrated male sheep

Rams are male sheep with their genitals still intact, meaning that they will be able to mate with ewes. "Sheep" is a general term for members of the genus Ovis, or more specifically the species Ovis aries. "Sheep" can refer to male, female, young, and old members of the species. Castrated male sheep are called wethers, and female sheep are called ewes.

The parallel between rams and stallions are that they are names pertaining to male, uncastrated members of their respective species. Stallions belong under horses. Geldings are the "wethers" of the horse family, and mares are the horse equivalent of ewes.
2. What is another name, mainly used by the British, for rams? Hint: it looks like a shortened version for a word meaning two pennies.

Answer: Tup

"Tup" is a solely British term for rams. "Buck", a term that describes the male of deer, goats, and other animals, can also refer to rams.

"Tuppence", a variant spelling of the word "twopence", which is a word in its own right, is a British coin equating to two British pence.

The other two answers, "Tupp" and "Tuppy", are not words.
3. Many breeds of rams have two of these, and they are generally longer than a female sheep's. What are they? Hint: They are the symbol for the Aries zodiac sign.

Answer: Horns

Among rams, horns are a status sign, the bigger and longer the better. They are also a ram's main weapons. Horns are the long, pointed growths that protrude from the heads of sheep. Horns are hollow, like cylinders that are curved. Among horned breeds, rams' horns are longer than ewes, and in some sheep breeds rams have horns while ewes do not.

Aries, when translated directly from Latin means "ram". Aries is a zodiac constellation in the form of a ram, hence the name. The symbol for Aries is a pair of ram's horns, sometimes with, depending on the interpretation, the face of the ram as well. In astrology, the Aries symbol covers the middle of March to the middle of April based on tropical astrology (which calculates the relative distance of the sun from the vernal equinox) or April 15 to May 15 according to sidereal astrology (based on observation of the stars).

For the other incorrect answers, "tusks" are long teeth found on certain animals such as elephants, "teeth" could be tools in the human mouth used to break down food for consumption, and "wool" is the hair that forms the fleece on some animals such as rams.
4. Rams have these because they provide the rams with good traction. What are they? Hint: Bible - unclean versus clean animals.

Answer: Cloven hooves

A cloven hoof is a hoof cleft in two, forming two toes, called claws. Cloven hooves are found on even-toed ungulates (Artiodactyls), but not odd-toed ungulates. For rams, cloven hooves can be vital to survival in some environments, such as those that have the rough terrain that mountain sheep live on. The cleft and toes provide traction and grip for animals.

Cloven hooves and ruminating are what marks an animal as "clean" as stated in the Biblical books "Leviticus" and "Deuteronomy".
5. Do rams live in a "bachelors only" herd until the mating season comes around? Hint: American bison and other animals do the same.

Answer: Yes

Many rams live in bachelor herds, although not all do. Those that do only interact with ewes during mating season, when they begin fighting over ewes. Living in a separate bachelor herd has many advantages, such as rams not forever fighting over leadership and mating rights, and young rams being healthier and sturdier.

American bison are noted for living exclusively in bachelor or maternal herds. Other animals that sometimes display such behavior are horses, specifically stallions, elephants, and giraffes.
6. Rams have a lot of this reproductive hormone, generally more than wethers. What is it? Hint: The word is derived from the Greek word for "male".

Answer: Androgen

An androgen is a male hormone, responsible for the production of male reproductive parts while the animal is developing in the uterus. Androgens are responsible for the maintenance of male characteristics throughout life. During mating season, testosterone levels are elevated as it is the most important androgen.

The Greek word for male, when written in the English alphabet, is "andros". "Andro" in English is a prefix also meaning "male".
7. On average, do rams mature sexually faster or slower than ewes? Hint: think humans.

Answer: Slower

Rams mature sexually between six and eight months old, whereas ewes could mature sexually as early as four months of age. This varies between species and breeds.

While statistics vary in humans, girls reach puberty by about 10-12 years old, while boys take longer, anywhere from ages 11-14.

The reason for this is not known, what is known is that males and females mature differently, with different growth hormones stimulating them. For males, androgens, and females, estrogens.
8. Rams can be dangerous and aggressive to the point of causing death.

Answer: True

Unlike ewes, rams are notorious for being dominant and aggressive, often head butting animals and even people they know. There have been numerous reports of humans being attacked by rams, provoked or unprovoked, with as least one reported death in the UK.
9. In what ancient civilization were rams held sacred? Hint: they worshipped many gods and animals.

Answer: Egyptian

The Egyptians worshipped rams; rams were one of the many sacred animals. Khnum, one of the three parts of the sun god Ra, is generally portrayed as a ram or with a ram's head. He was also known as Banebdjedet, which means The Ram Lord of Djedet. Hashfai and Amun are also other ram gods.
10. Do all rams get mates and equal dibs during the mating season? Hint: think totem pole.

Answer: No, usually the stronger and more aggressive rams are dominant

Since rams fight over mates during the mating season, the stronger ones generally dominate the weaker rams, taking the best mates and leaving the weaker rams to fight over the rest. As a result, some rams can mate with many ewes, while others with at most one only.

A totem pole is a pole, originally made in North America, on which were hung totems, whether of family members or otherwise. The order in which the totems are hung, from top to bottom, possibly denotes a social scale, with the most important at the top, and the least at the bottom. As a result, totem poles are often used in figurative speech talking about someone's social position.

Quiz-writing can be a difficult venture, more or less, but some of our brave authors opted in to receive a title in May 2012 that tested their focus. In addition to receiving a title with the word 'More' or 'Less' in the name, they were also restricted for category choices; those with a 'More' title had to use one of three categories given with the title and those with a 'Less' title had to use anything but the three categories given.
