Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The colors of cat fur are diverse and varied; however, there are usually considered to be about six basic coat colors. Which one of the following is not considered a fur color?

Answer: beige

The six basic fur colors are white, black, red (also called orange or ginger), brown, cream (a combination of white and red), and blue (also called gray). There are different shades and intensities of these colors, but all fit into these basic color categories.
2. Which one of the following is NOT a reason why cats shed their fur?

Answer: because they are too sedentary

Cats shed all year round to get rid of dead hairs. If a cat has a dust or food allergy, it might shed excessively. Outside cats grow a winter coat to protect them from the cold, and shed this extra fur when the weather becomes warmer again.
3. Most cats with orange fur are female.

Answer: False

Most cats with orange fur are male (about 75%). The reason for this is that the gene for fur color is carried on the X chromosome. Because males have only one X chromosome, if that one X chromosome carries the orange fur gene than the cat will have orange fur.

However, because females have two X chromosomes, both X chromosomes must carry the orange fur gene for the cat to be orange. In a female, one orange fur gene and one gene of another fur color will result in a blending of the two colors, leading to a tortoiseshell or calico cat.
4. The length of a cat's fur varies from breed to breed. Which one of the following cat breeds has long fur?

Answer: Ragdoll

The ragdoll is a large cat, with the normal adult weight being 15 - 20 pounds. Ragdolls were first bred in the 1960s.
5. Fur loss can be caused by a variety of different conditions; however, which one of the following is the most common cause?

Answer: ringworm

Ringworm is a fungus that can affect cats, transmitted by contact with other diseased animals or equipment that has been used on a diseased animal. Ringworm has several symptoms, including fur loss, scaly or crusty areas of skin, and itching. The infection may clear up by itself, but for longhaired cats special treatment might be required.
6. Whiskers, a specialized type of cat fur, are used to help the cat feel and sense the things around it. Whiskers are found on several places on the cat's body; however, which one of the following places do whiskers not grow?

Answer: on the back of their rear legs

Whiskers are two to three times thicker than the rest of the cat's fur, and are very sensitive.
7. Most people who describe themselves as allergic to cats are allergic to the cat's fur.

Answer: false

The majority of people that are allergic to cats are not allergic to the cat's fur, but to the minuscule dried flakes of saliva that are left in the cat's fur after the cat cleans itself. These flakes, called dander, collect in the cat's fur and often lead people to assume that they are allergic to the cat's hair.
8. A problem that plagues many cats (and cat owners!) is hairballs, caused when a cat swallows too much fur when grooming itself. Which one of the following is *not* a way to prevent hairballs?

Answer: making sure your cat drinks plenty of water

Although drinking plenty of water is good for your cat, it does not help prevent hairballs. Brushing your cat daily is a good practice because it gets rid of the loose fur so your cat doesn't swallow it; feeding your cat hairball prevention cat food can help as well, and the high fiber content in canned pumpkin helps to move any fur in your cat's stomach smoothly through its intestines.
9. Cat fur comes in a variety of different patterns. Which one of the following is the most common coat pattern in cats?

Answer: tabby

The tabby coat is the most common pattern. The other patterns are bicolor, tricolor, tortoiseshell, solid, and colorpoint. There are so many different colors and patterns of fur!
10. Blue-eyed cats with which fur of which color are at a higher than average risk of deafness?

Answer: white

Although not all blue-eyed white cats are deaf, many (65 - 85 percent) are. This is because the blue coloration of the eyes in a white cat is a result of the lack of a certain stem cell; deafness is caused by the absence of this same stem cell. However, white colored fur and eye color can be determined by different genes, so not every blue-eyed white cat will be deaf.
