Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the koala feed upon?

Answer: Eucalyptus leaves

The koala feeds on eucalyptus leaves almost exclusively. It has teeth designed for eating these leaves. The female has a pouch for her babies who climb on her back when they are older.
2. Why would you be unlikely to see a pig-footed bandicoot in the wild?

Answer: They are extinct

The pig-footed bandicoot is a small marsupial that was found all over Australia until it went extinct in the 1950s. It dined on insects, fruit and seeds. Not a lot about them is known but it is thought that they had two babies at a time and that they were solitary, nocturnal animals.
3. The animal in this photo is an Australian kinkajou.

Answer: False

This animal is an opossum. It is indigenous to the Americas and is the only marsupial to live there. It eats almost anything and can live in virtually any habitat other than desert and polar regions. The kinkajou is related to raccoons and is native to South America.
4. What is a macropod that is between kangaroos and wallabies in size?

Answer: Wallaroo

The open land animal being described here is the wallaroo. Closely related to the kangaroo, the wallaroo has babies called joeys and is a vegetarian. Not much is known about this animal because it is shy and secretive.
5. Where do wombats make their homes?

Answer: Underground

Wombats have powerful claws they use for digging in the ground to get to their homes. They have a backwards facing pouch so that they don't get dirt all over their babies. They eat plants of all kinds including leaves, bark, and seeds.
6. A musky rat-kangaroo is active during which part of the day?

Answer: Daytime

The musky rat-kangaroo is diurnal only. It eats small invertebrates, fallen fruits and seeds. It lives in the rainforests of northern Australia. It hops on all four of its legs and is terrestrial in nature.
7. What is the only land mammal on Rottnest Island, Australia?

Answer: Quokka

The nocturnal quokka is a very cute marsupial that is found in various places in Australia including Rottnest Island. It is the size of a domestic cat and equally adept at climbing trees. It is unafraid of humans and will accept food from them.
8. Which of these animals, shown in the photo, is one of Australia's most endangered animals in the early twenty-first century?

Answer: Gilbert's potoroo

The Gilbert's potoroo has fewer than 100 individuals alive in 2018. They were declared extinct in the 1970s until they were rediscovered in the Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve in Western Australia in 1994. They live in small groups in dense brushland and have two babies a year. The other options are extinct marsupials.
9. This animal is known as a common brushtail possum.

Answer: True

The common brushtail possum is a marsupial found all over Australia. They are nocturnal and herbivorous. It is one of the few marsupials seen in the city trees. They breed all year around and live about 12-14 years in the wild.
10. The dingo is a marsupial, but is often called a dog.

Answer: False

The dingo is Australia's wild dog. It is not a marsupial. This animal is found all over the country and its population is stable.
