Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On a horse there is part called a Jugular groove. Where is it?

Answer: On both sides of the horse's neck, just above the windpipe

The jugular groove contains the jugular vein, the carotid artery and the sympathetic trunk. The jugular groove is often used to take the horse's pulse. It is in the easiest place to feel a horse's pulse and is in a safe place to avoid being kicked.
The muscle next to the Jugular groove can get very tight if the horse is prone to cribbing and windsucking.
2. To ask a horse for a step backwards for training or for a show, which of the below would you do?

Answer: Say 'Back!' and keep firm contact on the reins until you get a step, then release

If you are trying to teach your horse to back up, it is best to start doing it from the ground in hand: Hold the lead rope/reins in one hand and say "Back". Pull gently at first, gradually getting harder on the lead rope/reins. If your horse is confused, try using the crop to increase the pressure by holding it low in front of the horse and gently encourage it to step back by moving it up and down. If still no luck, increase the movements of the crop until your are swishing it up and down in front of the horse's face. Be sure to reward him/her when you get a step backwards.

This is called backing up.
3. Where is the lumbar vertebrae?

Answer: Towards the end of the horse's spine where the back of the saddle sits

If the back of the saddle is too low and there for pressing against the lumbar vertebrae* your horse might try to buck you off as pressure on the saddle will hurt his/her back. So always get a properly trained saddle fitter to fit your horse's saddle.

*Vertebrae are all the bones the spine is made up of. Not just on horses, humans as well, and all animals with a backbone.
4. When an equine is young and nervous it is usually called a colour?

Answer: green

A horse being green does not always mean that the horse is spooky or dangerous, just that it is inexperienced and may find certain things scary just because it has never come across them before.
5. The dressage movement where the horse/pony trots on the spot is called a?

Answer: Piaffe

The Piaffe will only come up in quite high level dressage tests.
6. If a horse has mild colic what should you do?

Answer: Walk him round the yard to stop him lying down, and call the vet

Not all colics are serious but just in case, always call the vet just to check your horse is fine and that it doesn't have something worse that needs surgery, like a twisted gut.
7. How old do you have to be to handle a stallion out in public or on the roads in the UK?

Answer: 16

It is actually against the law to handle a stallion under 16 in England as they can sometimes be very dangerous. Therefore they are not suitable for children and young teenagers to handle.
8. Which two breeds of horse are known to have slightly dished faces?

Answer: Welsh and Arab

There are other breeds with slightly dished faces but these are the most popular. A dished face means the profile of the horse is curved inwards slightly.
9. Charlotte Dujardin won an Olympic medal on her horse, Valegro. What is Valegro's stable name?

Answer: Blueberry

Charlotte won her Olympic Gold medal for dressage in 2012 on Blueberry (Valegro.)
10. What does BHS stand for?

Answer: British Horse Society

There are two types of training a horse: The BHS way in which the rider in charge of the horse, and the natural horsemanship way where the rider and horse work in unison, neither more powerful than the other.
