Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you wanted to raise a lammergeier in captivity, what would you need to feed it?

Answer: bone and meat

Lammergeier is another name for the bearded vulture, and like most vultures it is a carnivore, yet primarily a scavenger. It used to be a called an ossifrage, which basically means "bone crusher," because it will pick up bones and fly away, then drop them and circle back to eat the marrow that was exposed when the bones broke.
2. In what area of Africa would you be able to see a bushbuck in the wild?

Answer: South-Eastern Africa (Sub-Saharan)

Bushbucks are small antelope, commonly standing only two to three feet tall at the shoulder. They are great jumpers, able to jump on average at least twice their height, and they enjoy swimming.
3. Which of these animals are known for surviving snake-bites, even from the most venomous snakes?

Answer: Ratel

The ratel, also called the honey badger, is known both for its ability to survive snakebites and its habit of attacking honeycombs. Although bee stings can kill it, ratels have been seen taking hundreds of stings while eating honey from the comb, and then running away, apparently unaffected.
4. There are thought to be 19 different species of duiker, a small type of antelope. These are divided into 2 genera. What are they?

Answer: bush duiker and forest duiker

The two categories are the bush duiker (genus: Sylvicapra) and the forest duiker (genus: Cephalophus). Interestingly, the bush duiker is represented by only one species, all the rest of the species are forest dwelling.
5. Which word best describes the dwarf mongoose?

Answer: Diurnal

Diurnal means that it is active during the daytime and sleeps at night, like most people. Nocturnal animals sleep all day and are active during the night, and crepuscular animals are most active in the times the sun is near the horizon, namely at dusk and dawn.
6. A genet can make a good pet.

Answer: true

Surprisingly, yes, there is a wild African animal that is becoming common as a pet, especially in the United States. A genet, although only distantly related to cats, looks something like a cross between a house cat and a ferret, and is said to have the curiosity and playfulness of both. They are bred in captivity for use as pets in many of the 50 states.
7. Which of these species are monogamous, and mate for life?

Answer: Dikdik

A dikdik is a tiny antelope. On average they're 14 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh only 10 lbs. Unlike most antelope, they don't require water, as the particular plants they like most have more than enough water in them for their needs.
8. Which of these animals has no teeth?

Answer: Pangolin

Also called a scaly anteater, their stomachs are specially designed to help grind up food, and they actually swallow small stones to aid in this process. A pangolin's entire body is covered with armor-like scales, and their diet consists of mostly bugs.
9. The scientific classification "Felis serval" refers to which creature?

Answer: A medium-sized cat with a spotted coat

The genus Felis refers to the various members of the cat family, such as lions, tigers, and even the common house-cat. Serval is actually the common name of this species as well.
10. Despite its name, the springhare is not related to rabbits, but is in the same class, order, and family as kangaroos.

Answer: False

The springhare lives only in Africa, and although it can jump like a kangaroo and looks kind of like a rabbit, the only scientific classification it shares with the kangaroo or the rabbit is that they're all in the same class, Mammalia. From order on down, they're completely different.
